Is it just me who thinks Callum Hawkins is pretty underrated? Fair enough, he doesn’t have the same pedigree in terms of times as the Africans but he is consistently brilliant in championship races
The same reason Brits and Americans never get medals anymore, no matter how talented they are, their lifestyles have nevr been as sad and cruelty from life has never effected them as much as the East Afrcian runners. It's their nature. The last time an American male won the word championships was 1989. Think about how much technology and comfort has been introduced to western Society since then.
@@calebt4yahweh210 You're an absolute idiot. You're blaming the perception of the stereotypical lazy american who has never run in their life as the reason why British/american athletes can't win a gold medal in track & field events? That is uneducated, narrow-minded and plainly wrong
Hats off to that competitor who took the lead and held it for over an hour 12 miles plus. That is nothing short of mental toughness on such a grueling event like the marathon. Ive never seen such a huge lead like that especially in world class competitions. Its a damn shame he dropped out its a difficult feeling when you get caught. You feel defeated but either way it was a brave run.
ehhhhh I disagree, anyone in that field could've done what he did, he ended up DNF'ing about half way, the real mental toughness (in my opinion) is finishing and equal (or negatively splitting) in these conditions.
Guys, he an a marathon 2 weeks prior. It was for exposure. Basically a pr stunt. He knew he couldn't finish, and he wanted to put his name out there at least for a bit.
I ran Philadelphia in Nov and it's not that bad till 30K. At that point you realize what the hell your doing and hate yourself if you're an average runner
I don't care I swear as an East African I know what hard work looks like. I wanted Hawkins to win because you know what it feels like when you are the only different person up there like Abebe Bikila of Ethiopia did in 1960 marathon in Rome Italy.
I always thought having a course running through the city was more interesting. that circuit lap course seems quite easy for confusing leaders with runners being lapped.
that was a mistake on hawkins, if he stayed behind and relax a bit when he caught up i think he could have atleast won the bronze. but it was a great race for him
Is it just me who thinks Callum Hawkins is pretty underrated? Fair enough, he doesn’t have the same pedigree in terms of times as the Africans but he is consistently brilliant in championship races
How many of you think at least Marathon rules should be changed to top five metals instead of the top three. I don't care if we have to add copper and Barz.😂😂😂😂
Am so happy for Callcum Hawkins, he's the man of the race, that's how marathon is ran, only if he had atleast gotten bronze, just like Galen Rupp blended it in Rio marathon....#love from Uganda.
Strategically it was such a huge risk for Ayala, but I can certainly appreciate the effort with his toughness and grit. It’s a shame, I was hoping he’d succeed but we can’t defy what’s been done since marathon racing has started. As great as all these athletes are, this shows us how weak/fragile humanity really is. We work hard to train the human body, mind and endurance but in the grand scheme of things we’re very limited.
I think Alayla knew he was screwed for this race since he ran a full marathon 2 weeks prior so he was just trying to pull off something spectacular and it didn’t work out as we know
People commenting on Hawkins missing out gold - do you think he has the kick that Desisa brought out in the last 500m? This is a cruel race considering the conditions.
Ayala's pace in the beginning was something he could not sustain. I suspect he planned to only run 21.1km anyway. His pace dropping from 3min/km to 3min15/16 seconds per km clearly showed he did not have the endurance for that.
Russell Moore I was wondering about that too, but probably it was only because he was in the heat of the moment and felt like it is best to try and continue the pushing that he already started. Probably was afraid that the momentum that he built up would be lost if he settles, and then he won’t be able to replicate it.

Why do you have to make it about race? Of course they would have given the Ethiopian runner props for doing what Hawkins has, and sympathized him for that crushing defeat. Hawkins got the props he did because this was the second straight championships he worked hard to medal, but finish fourth. Second championship in a row. I'm giving him props, too. If it were an Ethiopian, a Kenyan, or anyone else, I would've done the same thing for them, and I'm sure the commentators would, too. Stop making everything about race because you sound ridiculous.
