    To me, there is something magical about gathering ingredients from nature and using them in something you make from scratch.
    In June I visited my grandmother and brought home some sand from the beautiful Fäboda beach. This week I made a special exfoliating soap with the sand. I’ll be thinking about the beach when I use this soap🌊
    Thank you for watching❤️
    ○ Sand soap recipe:
    I calculate my soap recipes with this lye calculator: soapee.com/calc...
    Please wear proper safety equipment when making soap.
    270 g olive oil (45%)
    180 g coconut oil (30%)
    120 g unrefined shea butter (20%)
    30 g castor oil (5%)
    152 g distilled water
    10 g citric acid
    90.3 g sodium hydroxide (84.3 if not using citric acid)
    (35.7 % lye concentration, 5% superfat)
    4 tbsp sand
    2 tsp rhassoul clay
    10 ml fragrance oil for a lightly scented soap (I used aqua minerals & sea kelp by gf)
    Cure the soap for at least 4 weeks before using it on your skin.
    ○ Citric acid information
    When citric acid and sodium hydroxide lye (NaOH) are combined, sodium citrate is created. Sodium citrate works as a chelator in soap.
    A chelator traps metal ions such as calcium and magnesium that can be found in tap water.
    These metal contaminants can cause rancidity and soap scum in handmade soap.
    A chelator binds to these metals so that they can’t bind to the soap molecules. This way the soap won’t react with them and the soap's lather improves + shelf life increases.
    Citric acid does not lower the pH of soap. Instead it consumes some of the lye and increases the superfat. Add 6 g extra lye for every 10 g of citric acid added to a soap recipe if you want to keep the superfat % at the same level.
    How much citric acid should be added to soap?
    Usage rate in bar soap is 1-2% of the oil weight.
    How to use citric acid
    Add citric acid to the distilled water and dissolve completely before adding the lye.

    You just popped up in my queue and I’m so glad! I love your style and how soothing your videos are. Also, RECIPES! Thank you so much for sharing. I’m doing a series of soaps using local ingredients from the Tillamook Bay area in Oregon (USA). So far I’ve done a salt water soap and next is honey from a local bee keeper. Now I can add a sand soap! Thanks again!

    After testing the soap, would you have changed something in your recipe??
    I'm afraid the sand will make it too harsh on the skin, have you considered grinding the sand with a blender to make it thinner ? (i don't know if that works)

    If you use citric acid in your soaps can you still claim they are PRESERVITIVE FREE? Is citric acid considered a preservitive. Thanks to anyone who can answer

    • @ronda4094
      @ronda4094 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a late reply, and im not a professional, but i do use food grade citric acid in my handmade soaps. Since its made from citric fruit, i consider it natural. I only use natural ingredients, other than the lye. I had the same question because i was making soap for many years before i decided for me, that if its food grade, it wouldnt be considered an un natural preserative, and they are all partly synthetic, from what i can see. I do like that it helps with soap scum, as well as it makes me feel more confident when using natural food ingredients in my soaps. It doesnt seem to be needed, but is a preference of the soap maker. This is not a professional answer, and is just my personal expierence with citric acid in soap. I do hope you found the answer you were looking for, and that you do try food grade citric acid in your soap. 😊

    • @ronda4094
      @ronda4094 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jlo9207 i realize soap is naturally preserved, but since i use citric acid in my soaps now to prevent soap skum, i like that it is used to preserve food. Although not necessary, it fits together nicely for my soaps. This is just my preference, and not science.

    Beautiful video! I have a question about the exfoliation of the sand in the soap - is it similar to pumice or more like salt, coffee or jojoba beads. I have some very fine and soft sand that I collected at a local beach and I want to make a very gently exfoliating soap with it but don't know what to expect. I have an awesome idea for it but I hate experiments that fail my expectation 😂
