If you aren't a big spender you probably wont finish a set of G8 before you start farming G9, but there is no harm in making it if you have the gear. You get all of your materials back anyway.
Once you enhance your armor you can't remove it, you can only swap it. Best bet is too go peaceful on jade lake and get the piece you want to swap out for the upgrade.

You can't because you never used one to make it, you only get g7 divine from starter events
