From what I heard, apparently Victor Salva was buddies with Francis Ford Coppola and Coppola did help him get out of jail by paying for his lawyers and still kept getting him gigs. Also, there was some controversy around the time the film was coming out where Salva’s case got brought up again in the press and there was protest by Salva’s victim, but according to the higher ups at Disney at the time, they said that they only found out about what he did after production began and they made sure that there were no kids on the set. So most likely, Disney was just pretty much stuck with him since he was probably recommended by Coppola.

I’m a gay man and I’m pushing 50 and when I saw this in the theater I became very uncomfortable. Because people talk about the male gaze? This is the predator gaze. it is the director. The camera always lingers on shirtless and sometimes showering underage males. I don’t know if you guys have done the jeepers creepers series, but they are even worse. And none of the characters are gay so it’s not about them. It’s about the directors looking at them. I don’t think I could ever bring myself to watch Clownhouse, knowing what happened to one of the actors in real life. Thanks again!

The in-universe explanation was that the peeing boy was scared to be alone with a monster on the loose, but Ebert noted the composition was unnatural.

What was up with people treating characters with deformities as like the worst looking people on earth. I remember there was another movie called Penelope. Which had a woman with the nose of a pig and people just looked at her as if she she some kind of monster and even as a kid I was like there is literally nothing wrong with her. People tried way too hard in making characters look like assholes in these kinds of movies back then.
It was the 90’s, they didn’t really know how to write these types of characters other than trying to get that Oscar bait. I know Penelope came out years later but still.

What was up with people treating characters with deformities as like the worst looking people on earth. I remember there was another movie called Penelope. Which had a woman with the nose of a pig and people just looked at her as if she she some kind of monster and even as a kid I was like there is literally nothing wrong with her. People tried way too hard in making characters look like assholes in these kinds of movies back then.
It was the 90’s, they didn’t really know how to write these types of characters other than trying to get that Oscar bait. I know Penelope came out years later but still.

@@KerReeeee Maybe I was stretching to find an example. Because to tell you the truth I never saw the movie Penelope since I thought it looked like one of those romance kind of movies. I mostly was going off of the trailers I saw on TV where it seems like she was being judge by people just because of the shape of her nose. To the point where kids dressed up like her for Halloween.
I'm guessing there's more to this curse then just having a pig nose. Like actually turning into a full on pig.
