    Man, the character assassination of Henry Wallace was hilarious with the last one.
    He was effectively hand-selected by FDR for a variety of reasons (the only time he really chose his own VP) because of his ardent progressivism and his support base in rural America. He was far, far more progressive than any other FDR VP, whether it be Truman or Garner, and he was one of the first VPs to really have a role besides the ceremonial duties outlined in the Constitution. He proved to be extremely important in the roles FDR gave him, including being a keystone in the mobilization efforts in the pre-war period. His tour through latin-america in the post-Pearl Harbor period helped convince many South American countries to declare war on the Axis.

      Too bad he was a soviet sympathizer and friendly with communist agents who undermined American efforts to aid the ROC and helped hide Soviet atrocities from parts of the government and the general populace.
      Someone who underestimates and is even friendly with totalitarian genocidal states is not someone worthy of praise. He might of done some good diplomatic work in the fight against Nazi tyranny, but he utterly failed when the world was faced with the Red Menace.

    10:02 I recommend looking up “Disney’s America”. It was a concept for an American History themed park next to The Bull Run Battlefield. It would have distinct sections based off of different periods of American History, including a Civil War Fort which would host outdoor re-enactments and a fight between ironclads, An Industrial Revolution factory town with a roller coaster, and a WW2 Airfield with real aircraft and tanks alongside a simulator ride that would take riders on bombing missions.

    So about that Scout Car killing a Tiger:
    So U.S. Troops were hiding out near the edge of a forest (I believe during the battle of the buldge). Suddenly a lone Tiger drove down the street near the edge. Everybody basically stayed down to not get seen by the Tiger, which worked. After the Tiger passed most of the troops, a Greyhound Scout Car sprung alive and started to catch up to the Tiger, who's crew didn't notice it yet. Then the Greyhound hit the first shell into it's back, at really fucking close range. Tiger noticed it, stopped and started turning it's turret while the 2nd shell hit. Then before the Tiger's turret fully turned, a 3rd shell hit and the Tiger got destroyed.
    Risky but pretty cheeky tactic

    • @NoFlu
      @NoFlu 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Michael Burns So I did some reading on it and the way I described it is (mostly) true. However, I found a good article that looks closer at the incident and if it even happened like it is commonly claimed ( tanks-encyclopedia.com/ww2-greyhound-vs-tiger-st-vith/ ) Apparently it is more likely they destroyed a Panzer IV or a STUG III and simply mistook the shape of it for a Tiger (which many did). But ballistic test say it COULD have happened, but reports are not supporting it

    Great Video and Thanks;
    My two cents - Mostly based upon the book "The War between the Generals";
    -Marshall is the only 5 star general to have both never served in combat command and not a West Point graduate (and most likely will be the only one). He received the appointment as Supreme commander heavily based upon three factors;
    1. FDR loved him and they had an excellent working relationship.
    2. Both he and the British Command respected each other (a rarity at the time).
    3. He had the ability to keep Nimitz and MacArthur from tearing each others heads off as to who was in command of the Pacific forces.
    @49:45 Gen Patton is buried in Luxemburg. To date, he is the highest ranking US military soldier to be buried outside of US territory. His request.

    • @mathewm7136
      @mathewm7136 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the Thumbs up! One more "Cliff Claven" trivia from the book:
      -German High Command (under AH's orders) purposely did not use Ultra for the prep of of Bulge. They resorted to secure telephone and courier communication. This is one of the reasons the Allies were caught by such surprise. In Jan and Feb, after the battle had run it's course, SHEAF HQ started believing that the reason as to why Ultra messages weren't used was that the Germans were on to their little "secret". So, from Jan until the end of the war, Ultra intel was all but excluded from planning.
      -After the war, they found out the true as to why. OKW was afraid that the Army commanders in the East (who monitored Ultra), who were fighting just to exist day to day, would find out about the plan and the amount of forces being hoarded and just up and quit.

Small note; most of that footage from a Bridge too far at Arnhem, wasn't actually shot at Arnhem, since that was already completely rebuilt and looked nothing like it should have for a WWII movie, anymore. So instead it was shot in Deventer, a city further North. There, a similar bridge was and is still in place and the bridge end on the city side looked much as it had in Arnhem during the war.

    You're right about the logistics.
    The Germans knew in advance that there would be a big offensive north of Beringen (Belgium) but where not sure if it would go to the east or north.
    They concluded that based on the Allies not pushing north at Antwerp and block the 15th Army in escaping via Woensdrecht (The Netherlands better known as Holland).
    Also on intelligence by a Belgian agent with specific information XXX Corps moving east towards the Hasselt area.
    But the Germans guessed the attack would go eastward to the Ruhr area.
    So they redirected the only direct available crack unit (German Parachute Regiment 6) 'en route to Woensdrecht'.
    Which was ' en route' to the 'Woensdrecht Narrows' to block the any Allied advance'.
    Upon arrival at Tilburg trainstation it was redirected to Beringen instead in an attempt to destroy the Beringen Bridgehead before it fanned out.
    At that time the shore line at Lillo was defended by a weak Batallion named Theuerkauf.
    An ad-hoc unit of 200 naval clerks , dockworkers , RAD men and what not.
    And the Sconce of Ooderen by 40 Flamisch SS Guardsmen.
    On September 4 the Antwerp Resistance (White Brigade) begged the British troops to go north and at least take the Docks and Merxem bridge, but they were told they had orders to halt.
    At least Monty could say I liberated Antwerp.
    But this meant only the City Centre.
    He was already busy with operation 'Market-Garden'.
    Therefor the Resistance tried to do it themselves as they knew how vital these docks would become in the future.
    I put this on this forum as nobody answered for 4 years
    forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=62443&start=45
    Like you said it's all about logistics. And related to the same topic and hardly anybody pays attention to.
    The Port of Antwerp became fully operational on the same day as the 'Battle of the Bulge' started.
    Just in the nick of time.
    Now what most historians overlooked is that FJR.6 with Battle Group Chill were sent to all the hot-spots to stabilize any frontline breach for the Germans.
    German 1st Parachute Army and 15th Army were constant reminded that as soon as the Canadians would reach the railway dam at the 'Woensdrecht Narrows' Battle Group Chill had to be sent at a moments notice and each Army had to make sure to make arrangements as any delay would have severe consequences for their Commander in Chief and anyone else responsible.
    All to keep the Port of Antwerp nonoperational as long as possible.
    During the night of Oct.7 in the midst of a battle, FJR.6 and Kampfgruppe Chill suddenly had to be pulled out.
    The Canadians were at Ossendrecht and were close to railway dam at Woensdrecht.
    Op on arrival FJR.6 was deployed almost immediately.
    It took the Canadians 2 weeks of bitter fighting to overcome the 150 meters / 164 yards to reach the railway dam.
    The Canadian Black Watch , famous for the Dieppe raid was almost wiped out in 5 hours by a Company of German Parachute Regiment 6 on Friday Oct.13.
    After the Battle for Woensdrecht on Oct.26 FJR.6 was pushed to the north.
    On Oct.27 Lt.Col.von der Heydte left is Regiment as he was reassigned to command the last German Para dropping of the war (Operation Stösser- Battle of the Bulge).
    And what nobody seems to know, is that FJR.6 and Kampfgruppe Chill were actually assigned to sail to the Walcheren-Causeway.
    FJR.6 minus 3rd Batallion and KG.Chill that would left as rearguard was to sent to the Walcheren-Causeway on Oct.31 from Benedensas.
    And the rest would keep on fighting as long as they could hold Dinteloord and then follow or if needed join them sooner.
    On Oct.31 the 2nd Canadian Infantry Div. reached the Walcheren-Causeway.
    For the Germans all was in place.
    The boats were safe and standby at the Zijpe refuge Port.
    First Batallion of FJR.6 and one or two StuGs were already ferried the night before from the St.Philipsland Peninsula to that Port.
    Third Batallion was still engaged and would follow later.
    And FJR.6 itself was at Benedensas waiting for dusk to set in to embark.
    If FJR.6 and Kampfgruppe Chill would pull the same stunt as the did prior, during and after 'Market-Garden' like at Woensdrecht, what could go wrong.
    Like I said the Port of Antwerp became fully operational on the same day as the 'Battle of the Bulge' started.
    But on november 26 the Eastern-Scheldt was declared mine free and that's when the Port became actually operational.
    Now if the Germans had been able to hold on the Walcheren-Causeway for a week or even 2 weeks longer this would have had a tremendous impact on Allied logistics and planning.
    And on getting sufficiënt supplies and men ashore to cope with the 'Battle of the Bulge' instead of only the use of the remaining Normandy artificial harbor and some minor Ports.
    As Patton said at the start of the 'Bulge' " We could still lose this war ! ".
    Well the reason why FJR.6 and Kampfgruppe Chill were never send to the Walcheren-Causeway but to Numansdorp and Dordrecht is this small Dutch Resistance Group.
    My Granddad was one of them.
    On Oct.30 just 4 days after the Battle for Woensdrecht they came under indirect Canadian command and were ordered to take and hold the ferry of Oud-Vossemeer until the Canadians would reach the other side at Nieuw-Vossemeer.
    In doing so entire Island fell in Resistance hands without the Germans even noticing it or paying any attention to it.
    That would became desasterous the next day.
    Just 15 minutes before dusk half of the remaining 9.Coy./FJR.6 peddeld relaxed to Oud-Vossemeer and all became victom to an ambush which was the 3rd fight of that Resistance Group.
    Not only that.
    Suddenly the Germans realized that it would be impossible to sail in front of WN.402 at Stavenisse unnoticed.
    Even during the night as the fairway is just yards away of that observation Post which overlooked a large part of the Eastern-Scheldt.
    Oud-Vossemeer is the area where the Roosevelts decended from.
    These are the men who fought against a Company of FJR.6 for 6 days behind enemy lines and not 6 hours.
    th-cam.com/video/Gu6VbpMMvm8/w-d-xo.html
    After that they served another 130 days on the Western Front line where they had to face raids by the German equivalent of the British Royal Marines Commandos.
    Still barely armed not able to defend themselves properly, and dressed as civilians being captured which meant torture and execution.
    After a brief parade on March 14 1945 they were send home never to hear of it again.
    Most likely the majority never received even the Dutch Resistance Badge as the war ended 2 months later.
    They just wanted to get on with their lives and forget all about it.
    And never knew about who these troops actually were.
    To them they seemed just regular German soldiars.
    They felt it was their duty to aid the Allied advance as much as possible.

    I find your discussion on the D Day beachs interesting because as a child I often went to the beach at Arromanche during the summer and sunbathing with old WW2 remnants around me never seemed strange for me, so I found it strange that you found it strange. Any beach in Normandy has at least a few germans fortifications and you have monuments, museums and military cemeteries everywhere in the area so people who live there are desensitised about it. Also tourism was already a big industry in the D Day landing areas before the war so tourism just continued after the war and now you have even more tourists.

    How to pronounce Bastogne: Good luck. I've also traveled to Belgium and spent a lot of time in Bastogne (including the hospital, long story) ... I've asked many people in Belgium how to pronounce it, I got many answers. There are more than one language spoke in Belgium ... French, Flemish, and in some eastern sections (like St. Vith) - German.

    I understand this is a little bit of snooping, but at 40:14 you can see some Mosfilm videos in the Talkernate History TH-cam account’s recommended. For those uninitiated, they were a movie house set up by the the U.S.S.R. which produced hundreds of Soviet films. Once the state collapsed, no one was around to claim the copyright of a now defunct state-produced media so they simply put the movies up on TH-cam. A decent set of them have full English subtitling. It’s a fine selection, if anyone is interested. It’s good to know our fine podcast hosts are Культурные товарищи.

    Looking at the screencap at 1:07:21 I skimmed it and didn't realise what GMS stood for. Also I love the 'Alternate Dukakis' cover.
    I love alternate history, but it makes it really awkward to discuss when authors start taking really reactionary bents and subtly or not so subtly start fawning over the Nazi or the CSA. Like, its one thing to dislike Stalin or even the Soviet Union in general, but some of it is John Birch tier lunacy. This isn't to say you can't enjoy campy althis with a reactionary bent (I sometimes do), but while reading all I can think is "Damn. Homeboy has issues".

    The Italian-sounding pronunciation of Bastogne "Baston-ya" is a good reason people reading off foreign names should stick with Anglicization of names for things they aren't familiar with. Your consistent use of -ur for the French eu and German Ö or oe sounds like you did with "Murz" for Meuse are a good example. Will say it does sound really grating to people who actually know how it's pronounced though.

    The part of Belgium that speaks German is literally a chunk of the old Duchy of Luxembourg from before it was partitioned. Surprised you didn't know Belgium was mostly Flemish though? I guess the French have been the ruling class since Belgium was directly integrated as part of France during French Revolutionary Wars, so it makes sense you wouldn't I guess.
