Only women and children were the first to be saved. That left the men waiting on the ship. The titanic was the rich men's grave.

Yeah, I'd also wondered why I never heard of someone encountering a skeleton at the site of the Titanic. God, that's so creepy seeing those shoes, knowing there was body there. No wonder Ballard is pushing for preservation of the site.

I can’t say I understand at what point it becomes archaeology instead of disrespectful to remove dead bodies and such from a site.
It really is surreal and eerie at the same time when you think about the way he explains hundreds upon hundreds of bodies raining down to the bottom of the Atlantic. I can't imagine seeing something like that. Can you imagine hundreds of bodies falling out of our skies? That's exactly how it is for whatever lives below the surface.

I have always heard that at such depths a human just basically turns to dust due to the pressure .... can someone more knowledgeable please explain how these boots are the way they are ..and being explained the they are .... I would appreciate it 😊

Ashli - it's because the boots are filled with water (you're right due to pressure bodies become like dust). Also they are positioned like this because a dead body is like a rag doll and flops down in contorted, unnatural positions.

Unlike others who have explored the remains of the Titanic and exploited it, and many who have salvaged the wreck and in the process caused great damage - Dr. Robert Ballard has a deep respect and reverence for what remains of the ship and the victims, and doesn't want to exploit it for personal greed or fame.
He wants to preserve what is possible.
I truly admire this man.
He should have played Jack in "The Titanic."
Such a horrific event, the sight of seeing such a huge ship sinking before your eyes and hearing the screams, can only imagine. Then the deathly eerie silence. What an experience. RIP :(

I remember when i was a small child and when i first heard about this for the first time..It does something to you ...you're not the same.. There's a lost.. a sadness that just crawls into your heart ..into you're soul ..you cannot shake it...It's there, its like a whisper, a forgotten voice a cry long gone and yet you still hear .. It's too late now.. You know.. its here the sadness of the forgotten, the cry the lost souls, it's part of you... Oh look I just saved myself 250,000 dollars and my life.
Imagine those still in the ship as it plummeted! They could survive for a couple of minutes underwater, the feeling would have been insane. It’s complete darkness, they can feel the ship rapidly falling to the bottom of the ocean which meant pressure all over their body, like they were being squished and it also meant the water would have felt more cold as the sank!
All this while knowing there was no way out 😳

I followed his expedition years ago and agreed that he did the right thing as regards the resting place of so many unfortunate souls. Mr. Robert Ballard is a real gentleman, I wish him well.
I watched some documentary about the titanic and the commentator mentioned dive companies went down to the wreck to look for items of value. During the program the person showed a ring and said it was found on a body/skeleton. And I'm like "that's impossible!. This video proves it. Thank you Robert ballard. For the record there shouldn't be skeletons down there because the sea life would eat the bones.
Technically, bones are known to sometimes survive within a mix of concreted slurry, even heavy sands can sometimes protect them from the water.

Hopefully in the future, I would like to go see the Titanic in person. You could pay (not sure how much, must be pricy) to go see it. They'll take you in a submarine and you could see it. The Titanic is going to collapse within the next 50 years due to all the water pressure, I would love to go down and see it some day. RIP.
+adrianibarra Please don't. Wreck tourism has destroyed the Titanic. Rich people have paid to go down and the operators of the submarine are extremely careless and caused so much damage.

I read in an old book on famous sunken ships, on one subject on the Britannic, Titanic's sister, they hoped someday in the future they could plant underwater cameras outside and inside the Britannic and people everywhere with Internet access can see the old shipwreck for themselves right at home, similar to what they do with Google satelite cameras. People could see a historical site without paying for a thousand dollar plane ticket and thousands of more dollars for a submarine tour. They wanted to make this a thrilling experience for everyone and not reserved for the rich.
They have the technology and the motivation. All they need is enough money to make it happen.

For some ridiculous reason the the jerks in Greece who claim authority over antiques like the sunken ship won't allow pictures or videos to be taken inside or outside the Britannic. That makes no sense and raises suspicion of there being a hidden conspiracy behind as to what truly caused the Britannic to sink. People to this day are still debating whether it was a torpedo or a mine and we won't ever know the truth unless you want to go to jail for 'breaking the law'.

he's exactly right, I believe in preservation efforts to keep the Titanic alive for future generations, retrieving some artifacts. After all, the Titanic itself is decaying rapidly and will be a spot of rust of the ocean floor in 100 years or so, but it is a graveyard. Enough artifacts have been recovered and let's all agree to not pluck anything else for the aera.

I'd agree with that sentiment if there was actually anyone alive to be offended by it. It's literally not a graveyard, the bodies were eaten up and destroyed ages ago. If it bothers your conscience, fine, leave the personal items, but pieces of the ship itself should be in a museum before it's too late.

It's even more of a reminder than a gravestone. This is their last evidence of existence and how their corpse came to rest and it is still here 106 years later. There is so much more tragedy in this than a grave site. We might even know the name of this passenger but will never be able to find out. It's incredible, tragic and chilling at the same time.

Seeing "The Big Piece" at the Luxor in Vegas 2 years ago. ..the several ton piece of the hull they hoisted up in 1998...was beyond words. I had yearned to see real Titanic wreck artifacts since I was a 9 yrs old child, so to finally stand next to it at 36 years old was a blessing. The exhibit did not disappoint and you could feel the sacredness of what you were witnessing with each artifact. I said a silent prayer in my head for those who died so unnecessarily and just gave thanks for those souls letting me be a witness to things that truly belong to them now.
Your comment is exactly why I feel that we should bring up what we can before the ship collapses in and everything is lost. The dead would be honored and remembered by keeping the story alive. Leave clothes and boots or shoes alone from where a person laid to rest but other things like ship pieces, pots, plates, furniture, etc. should be brought up.
We went to that exhibit too. Seeing people's belongings...haunting.
I saw and touched it years ago when they had a display at MOSI in Tampa, FL. Was surprised we were allowed to touch it. Bet you can't now.

These artifacts are so incredible, each and every single one is a human life, tells a story about each person that either survived or perished. It’s a sad thing to see these items , but yet it’s amazing to connect these items cuz we tend to forget about how many lives were truly lost.❤

I really enjoyed the exhibit I went to. Our entrance tickets were boarding passes that gave our names, history, and why we were travelling to America. We didn't get to find out if we lived or died until the end of the exhibit where we had to scour the giant list of survivors on the wall. It was an excellent exhibit. I also couldn't believe that the perfume samples still smelled!!!!

Anyone into Titanic should consider visiting the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA. It's larger than the Titanic and, although a couple of decades newer, it is still very impressive and reminiscent of that style of transatlantic ocean liners. You will not be disappointed 😉
what i find scary is how hundreds of bodies wouldve plunged into the freezing atlantic from the stern when it went almost vertical in the final moments of the titanic. All those people falling to their doom off the end of the ship to sink to the bottom of the atlantic
My hat is off to the first seven comments on this site! They all were well said and very heartfelt. Titanic has always been emblematic to me, and seeing this by Dr. Ballard and seeing those shoes where a person once laid, is especially heartbreaking. After the movies and the motion pictures and the editing for movie purposes begins to fade, this is when you really get a taste of what really happened and the suffering that all those real people must have gone through knowing that it was the end for them. I remember when I saw the exhibition in New Jersey right after Dr. Ballard and his team discovered the wreck. Being able to see the physical representation... so many people's innocent lives..was in itself a tremendous blow to me personally and emotionally, and I remember at the end of the exhibition there was a signing book, much like there is after a funeral. I thought it was apropos considering we were not just there at any museum, this was a memorial and a remembrance. My entry was: "... how fragile life is!" And now looking at this, I realize even more the importance of appreciating every day that God wakes us up in the morning, and truly taking in the whole day and deeply appreciating the day we have to enjoy. It's good for our spiritual healing, our mental health; it's good for our soul. Ultimately, it's good for our families and communities! May they all rest in peace, and may all who watch this become thankful. ☮️

The more you learn about the Titanic disaster the more tragic and horrifying it becomes. It's the complete lack of control these people had over their fate. I think the 9-11 attacks have a similar sadness and tragedy and why it resonates so deeply with everyone, anyone can relate to being a passenger on a large vessel or plane of some sort, completely at the mercy of nature and human engineering, and this is the stuff of nightmares for us all.

Titanic will be a rust stain at the bottom of the sea and then you'll be sad when you can't go down there and see it anymore. Most parts of the Titanic should be saved and put into a museum! Raise as much as possible. Oh but it's ok when people grave rob Egypt mummy graves. Titanic is a grave but it should be saved!

Joseph Wayne the mary rose sank in 1547 it was raised in 1982, the titanic wont turn to dust, it currently support the anchor and chain on deck without collapsing, we could easily remove a large part of the ship bit by bit. it would be a shame to lose this, in a few hundred years nobody will remember it.
HaiLsKuNkY actually it's corroding fast . When they found the wreck they identified a bacteria that was eating away at titanic and it's estimated it has 30 years left before the shell breaks down
Actually there was a small part of the ship that had been broken off and was raised, I saw the real thing in the Las Vegas Titanic exhibit a few years ago. It was pretty cool to see. But I think they have moved it since.
Knowing the fact that these people wanted to be rescued and live gives me the feeling they wouldn't mind their belonging to be brought up and shared in their memory. Leaving them there is sad and will ensure they will be forgotten someday.
Bringing these items back is not as if you would be really be digging into a real intended grave yard.
This _is_ a real graveyard, multiple survivors have said they want the ship to remain where it is, and to let it slowly disappear is the best way of honoring the fallen

I love everything that has to do with the Titanic but I get teary eyed & sometimes cry when I see the ship & the debris field...all those poor souls that lost their lives that early morning....like at the end of the movie Titanic when Rose meets up with Jack at the clock on the staircase I like to think that those that died that morning are all there like that. May they all be at peace....

I think this guy is wrong. The bodies in the debris field are probably passengers who got sucked down with the ship. Although it's morbid to think about, I can't help but wonder how many people went down locked in their cabins. Between those on deck, and those in lifeboats, there's a lot of people unaccounted for.

Anthony Zavala Bodies usually always sink and resurface from the decompositional build up of gasses. In very cold water, these types of decomposition do not occur. If you've ever wondered why it is said that Lake Superior never gives up her dead, that's the reason.

the Titanic wreck site is not only a wreck site. But it is also a grave site because all those unfortune passengers and crew members that died there that night and should be treated as such. May god grant them eternal everlasting life in new heaven and new earth.
My grandfather's uncle was supposed to travel to America on Titanic. As he said in his diary soon Titanic's departure, he was very sorry that he couldn't get on board due to inflammation in his eye, which was detected on the health examination. Just hours before Titanic's departure. So because he was on the passenger list and his absence on the ship wasn't documented properly, obviously afterwards he wasn't found among the people who were rescued from the sea. Then authorities thought he had died and lost in the sea as he wasn't found. Actually he was left behind on the shore as Titanic sailed away without him and his family. Later, as he read his own death announcement on the news paper, he had to prove to the authorities that he was alive with birth documents etc. and that he wasn't on the ship.
He wasn't so sorry afterwards to not get on the great Titanic, so he sailed with different ship to United States after recovering from his illness. He's one of the few of my finnish cousins that got to the America in the early 1900's and returned. I'm glad that his trip was well documented as he kept diary along the way and lived long to tell the story onward.
I agree hole heartedly with what Robert ballerd says. The titanic wreck site is more than just a wreck site. It's also a underwater grave Yard and should be treated with reverence and respect.
Can you imagine being on this ship when it happened? This legend of a ship and actually witnessing and hearing the sounds. This tragedy fascinates me to no end. I encourage you all to try to do this in a VR experience.

Baaru Joseph I understand why some people want them to leave the ship alone since it's a grave yard, but it's also understandable that they would want to recover some things from the ship. The bodies might be gone, but Titanic itself will be gone eventually too. There are things in the Ocean that can eat that stuff like bacteria and other sea creatures, so it's not going to be there forever.

I remember seeing it for the first time as a 6 year old in primary school. Happened across a Discovery book about Titanic and it’s demise and there was that exact photo. It has stuck with me ever since.

Did the bodies remained normal in the sea bottom or were simply smashed by the pressure? Like organs all over the water and all since the pressure would rip them apart?
There is a Mythbusters episode on this. A human body sinking that deep will not hit the ground intact, let's put it that way.
It was a horrible tragedy and with so many unlucky events that could have helped but didn't. It's a graveyard and it should remain so. No one owns the Titanic anymore. It belongs to the world because of the tragedy. The world mourned.

The wreck will soon be completely gone. I used to think wreck and artifacts should be left alone. I now believe as much as possible that everything should be brought up and cataloged and displayed to honor those victims.
He brings up a great point about taking objects fro sites. If you want a souvenir, buy something from a gift shop. But if you find a spent round in gettysburg, you leave it where you found it, and at least tell the national park service.

And nobody of us heard of Titanic after her lifespan come end. Like many cruise ship come end after old of age. out of date technology. They forget about them.

I get so tired of people claiming the remains shouldn't be moved. It's history and is better understood if people are standing a few inches from the boots than at the bottom of the ocean. When those boots rot away, then what of the person's memory? It's lost for good. The sense of mortality and folly will be preserved for generations above water.
The first discoverer of the Titanic was altruistic and believed that the ship should be left as a graveyard and foolishly didn't bring up something to prove he had found her so he lost the salvage rights. In time, there will be nothing left. What's to be gained by that rather than bringing things up and preserving them for history?

+WachdByBigBrother I disagree. First and foremost, the Titanic is a graveyard. People died there. They died gruesomely, in a horribly traumatic way. Would you walk over your grandmother's resting place and steal her most precious jewels? It's the same with the pyramids. We have placed so many bodies from tombs in museums and that is not respectful at all. Pharaohs brought their gold and jewels with them to their resting places as offerings to the gods of the Afterlife. It's wrong.
+Melanie Collins I see both sides of the issue. My question is always what would the people who perished want? Speaking only for my dead self of course, but I think I would want my possessions brought to the surface. If they could be handed over to my family, great. If not, a museum. But I just wouldn't want my stuff rotting away on the ocean floor. I wouldn't want my body rotting away on the ocean floor, although in this case that isn't an issue because the bodies are all gone now. At some point in the future there won't be anything left of the site. At the very least I would like to see some innovation in preserving it. I don't know how they would or could do it, but if it's possible I think that would be a good idea.

They actually did bring up a small part of the ship. I saw it when it was on display in the Las Vegas titanic exhibit a few years back. It was really cool to see.
