This (intentionally not monetized) video exists because a concussion researcher reached out about making a more fun and informative video than what currently exists particularly with student athletes in mind! To that end, all sources and additional researcher contributors can be found in the video description. There aren’t any specific plans for me to create more videos in this vein, but we both agreed the video might have a better shot at reaching more people on my channel than on a brand-new channel or buried on some universities TH-cam channel. I hope you enjoy it and maybe even learn something. I legitimately did!
Does intentionally not monetized mean that you did this for free, or that you just didn't try to monetize the video? After following the links in the description I'm left with a lot of concerns about a joint consortium of professional sports and the military that almost all the links on their website lead to "coming soon!" pages.
Thank you for working with a researcher to create this. I feel like there is so much misinformation around concussions skewing one way or another. Both my brother and I have suffered a couple of concussions and we only have minor brain damage, lol
Surprisingly enough, my love of pro wrestling had given me quite a bit of insight into concussions and injuries in general. Most wrestlers who suffer concussions were fine after a few days and were back in action within the next week. Cody Rhodes tore his freaking pec off his body just lifting weights, while Big E suffered a broken neck from a routine suplex. So yeah, injuries can come from literally anywhere. It's really fascinating how the human body is quite resilient and also surprisingly delicate.
Quite resilient when used properly; surprisingly delicate when overused past limits or even just misused. Like how some people can punch through boards and stuff with proper technique but could just as easily break their hand if they don't punch hard enough
Super fun and learned things, here’s hoping you get more gigs like this and make “I’m Stuck Using the Eyewash Station Until I Explain Every Piece of Lab Safety Equipment”
Great video, Todd! I always love this art style, and I learned a lot I think! On a completely unrelated note... would you like to buy some eggs? I fell down the stairs two hours ago... and it's been surprisingly productive!
I like the video. It was very informative and approachable. But I want to stress this one point, athletes do have significantly higher cases of brain damage than the general population. I come from a boxing background, and you can imagine how common head injuries are in that sport. Again, I really appreciate the video, and it contained a lot of good information. Thank you so much for the amazing content, and keep it up!
Sure! I do think we’re mostly hoping to speak to non-professional athletes, and in particular student athletes rather than those who will make a career out of these things.
Concussions have been shown to affect quite a bit. Your personality can change. Drastically. Most known serial killers suffered head trauma as kids or teens, for example. The last concussion I had gave me Post Concussive Syndrome for over 2 weeks, knocking about 6 hours of memory out of my head.
Anna is stunningly good at voicework! Buts seriously, love this style of content! Seeing Rowntree's animation hurled me back to all the fabulous Cracked videos from their heyday. Brilliant!
I got hit by a slow moving drunk driver and knocked my noggin against the pavement once- I had blood coming out of my ears, but when I got checked out, I only had a concussion. Nice to know I'm not destined for Alzheimer's lol
Someone watched your content and thought: Yes, this is the perfect individual to talk about concussions! 😋 Dumb jokes aside, I think it's admirable that you took the time to make a humorous, yet balanced and well-informed video on such an important topic. Kudos. :)
I had pretty terrible head rushes all the time after my concussion for almost a year... still have white matter hyperintensities on my left temporal lobe 8 years later. Surprising info.
Great video! Also, always be open to getting a second opinion - I had a concussion that resulted in a bunch of nasty side effects like extreme nausea and even hallucinations. One doctor had me take a test and decided I was faking and was actually fine. I figured it must be all in my head and suffered for a month before I got talked into seeing a doctor who actually scanned my brain and was like "...well that's not right". So many doctors just think you're faking, but you know your body and brain stuff is no joke! (I'm much better now, amazing what difference a doctor actually treating you will do 😂)
I don't know how I feel about this video. One of the papers you cite, I think it's the 6th source (called Consensus statement on concussion in sport: the 6th International Conference on Concussion in Sport-Amsterdam, October 2022), has a conflict of interest section that's like 5 times longer than the abstract. And you don't mention how different positions have less concussion risk. And then we get into race, because you have to take into account bias when researching things. Those less concussion prone positions are often taken by white people, and POC are in more concussion prone positions. Selecting athletes with a lower concussion risk could skew results quite a bit. Lastly, until recently, the NFL used race based dementia testing, that assumed Black people had lower cognitive function than white people, and therefore would have to have much worse brain impairment to qualify for aid with the NFL. That could also skew the data. Overall, this was a decent video that made interesting points about concussions, that ultimately didn't go into enough detail to really lay any of my worries to rest.
I appreciate your thoughtful response! The main goal of this video is primarily to convince people to see a medical professional if they suspect anything amiss. Part of that is knowing the symptoms, and part of it is providing a little assurance that it's not automatically career-ending and that therefore it shouldn't be "hidden" or something for fear of never being allowed to play. Additionally, I guess, it's recognizing that any treatment plan will take into account holistic health (like continuing to take meds), and that in general playing sports or exercising is better for your health than not, even with concussion risk. As far as all the specific nuances of how concussions work or play out, I think it's important everybody (and especially medical professionals) continue to do research on the subject!
I was just made aware of this video and was really excited for the message it could deliver but had to turn it off upon hearing "Most NFL players are healthier than the average person, regardless of concussions". That is some dangerous misinformation right there! I have had one serious concussion in my life to the level at which an average NFL player would suffer and it took me no less than 2 full years to get rid of all symptoms and feel back to normal again. Not to mention all of my experience in MMA and the vast personality changes we see in fighters over the years in response to the repeated concussions they suffer! The fact that this video then tries to compare the constant bombardment of head trauma for certain athletes to that of someone falling onto the floor face first a single time. The entire video can basically be summed up as "Concussions? Why care?" and that is seriously the absolute opposite message that should be given right now! Also No, there is not a single peer reviewed paper I can find that states Soccer or Women's Hockey has the same concussion rates as the NFL. Soccer has a concussion rate of 1.07/1,000 where as the NFL has a staggering 2.5/1,000 and is literally the second most dangerous sport for brain health, right behind European Rugby! Please consider updating this video with the correct information as this content comes across purely as some sort of NFL propaganda saying "Don't worry about concussions guys, they don't even matter! Now please stand still so that Bruno can boot you in the head with his size 17 kicks!"...
So It's not that bad but also pretty bad and you should rest up to a month with restarting light exercise after a few days or week, and the symptoms could show up later and they're hard to identify and some other things can only really be diagnosed well after death by poking around in the dead brain or something or other so anyways basically go to the hospital. and memory problems are like a thing but not really but also concussions can still cause memory problems but- so basically i dunno. Edit: go to a hospital. I added it again for reasons.

@Drjordanbreeding soccer wrestling mountain biking and boxing. Some of the unconfirmed ones were me whacking my head on a low ceiling or cupboard door hard enough to cause the symptoms. Turns out you can train your brain to get "good" at being concussed.
I’m very uncomfortable with the bit about the “myth” that concussed people need to be removed from external stimulation. This is not a myth and she even goes on to basically say that when she says “after a short time of just a few days of rest” people should get back to light exercise under medical supervision. It is still recommended that concussed people avoid external stimulation (bright or flashing lights, loud sounds, strenuous exercise, etc). The length of time and the extent to which they need to avoid stimuli depends on the severity of the concussion and its symptoms. It feels misleading to call this a myth.
I think it’s an attempt to suggest that there are lots of negatives to overdoing it, but I think in all instances you should defer to a medical professional and also do more thorough research on your own!
