    7:20 For anyone curious, A.D. originally stood for “Anno Dominei” (forgive my spelling) which translates into “the year of our dom.” The decoding of A.D. into “after death (of Jesus Christ)” is more recently adopted by english speakers.

      And it doesn't work as "after death", otherwise there's a Jesus'-lifespan sized gap between BC and AD

      @Xavriel ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really but it's similar to Christ lore so you could take it that way if you want. Oddly it's attributed to Thor as it's his rune but it's the spear or thorn in Odin's side on Yggdrasil when he hangs for 9 days to grasp the runes. It's interesting to consider because those nine days could last a lifetime to Odin given the aetheric nature of the experience. He's meant to be entranced between life and death like the hanged man at this point. I don't care about bait... you could follow and donate to me if you weren't evil. Everyone knows who I am. Even the Satanic are charitable in aim to occasion.

    This is a bunch of mystical horseshit. Do not confuse the *name* of a rune for a supposed "meaning". While magic was certainly done with them, it was done in the form of writing supposedly magic *words*. The runes themselves were never thought to contain any magic power or any sort of meaning besides their phonetic value until long after they had fallen out of use and had since become a curiosity. When the ancient Germanic peoples somehow came up with the Elder Futhark (its origins are highly debated), they assigned names to the runes for ease of memorization, nothing more. There was no special meaning assigned to the runes. They were first and foremost a writing system, like any other. However, they were primarily written on wood or bark, and thus the vast majority of inscriptions are lost to us since wood doesn't preserve terribly well. Instead, we mostly get inscriptions in stone and metal that survive, stuff like gravestones and decrees and whatnot. Most of the much more mundane uses (shopping lists, personal notes, keeping stock of trade goods etc.) were largely written on media that don't preserve well and thus they are lost. These were used as a writing system like any other. While you may assign any meaning you want to these runes, be aware that those meanings (or any "meanings" you may encounter) are not historical, and that the runes were never used like that until relatively recently.

    • @SymbolSage
      @SymbolSage  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi there, thanks for adding to the discussion. Even today, scholars debate whether the runes contained magical power or not. I quote from a study: "At the crux of this study are two terms for different runological views explained by Antonsen (2002): “romantic” and “skeptical”. “Romantic” scholars assume that the Germani believed the runes to be magical, while the “skeptical” view holds that the early Germani never conceived of any rune magic." (Evans, 2011, Runes Past and Present). In our video, we cover the names of the runes as well as their purported meanings. There are many views and perspectives, none of which can be stated as definite fact. It seems you're defending the Skeptical view - but again, we cannot say that that is correct without a shadow of doubt.

      Funny thing though, a rune draw will give pretty good answers or predictions. So .. who knows!?
      Let's not forget that the Vólvas passed their knowledge orally to their successor, and with the church ... female knowledge was shunned, deletd, demolished!

    • @SeoDeadeHenn
      @SeoDeadeHenn ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sarahgilbert8036 How do you know that the predictions made aren't simply so vague that your brain could interpret basically anything as being a "correct prediction" (that's the secret behind all forms of divination).
      There's also the fact that even IF the ancient Germanic peoples assigned such meanings to their runes, they're entirely arbitrary to begin with (made-up symbols, made-up meanings, everything).

    Don’t know why this popped in my recommended but from the title alone, there’s absolutely no evidence to suggest that runes had magical meanings or anything like that. The only ‘evidence’ of the runes having magical meaning is ‘I don’t understand what this means or this inscription doesn’t make sense so it’s obviously magic’, which clearly isn’t scientific at all. Hey thanks for pointing that out! It's noted. I believe it's a common mistake:
      “A.D.” does not mean “after death,” as many people suppose. “B.C.” stands for the English phrase “before Christ,” but “A.D.” stands confusingly for a Latin phrase: anno domini (“in the year of the Lord”-the year Jesus was born). - brians.wsu.edu/2016/05/16/a-d/
