I just typed that same thing, only after having to search for "game like Limbo little girl on ship" because I had forgotten its name lol Wish I read your comment first.
This playthrough continues to solidify my point that Gab plays the most unique, known yet quasi-cult, super entertaining games! The mechanics are so different than the norm and took an entirely different take than I've ever seen! It still feels familiar, just a fresh new take... Gab's Smoldering! 😎
The dream-like sense of reading. If you ever want to tell if you're dreaming, try reading something. I may be the odd one out but I can actually read almost full sentences in my dreams, but of course, whenever I look away or try to fully focus, the sentences or words change and never stays the same
At first, I thought this was just a copylike of limbo/inside/little's nightmare, but I have to say that this shifting/rotating mechanic is so cool. The part with maze puzzle and rotating camera was SO unnerving
I've just recently stumbled across your channel, but you've shown some really intriguing games, and very cool puzzle approach ones. Doing a great job :)
I saw an explanation video concerning the story of this game on another channel. They seem to think that the story is that you're a teenager dying of a long term illness in a hospital ward. The enemies you encounter are surreal representations of staff and patients. The ending has you quite literally ''go into the light'', your character dies, and is being born again as a baby. Bleak, but not the worst ending out there.
wow! this is the 2nd well thought theory of this games storyline. noone else really thinks deep enough here to come up with their theories. i just keep seeing the same comment about how it reminds the person of "little Nightmares"...and other overly used comments is how the person doesnt understand the story line concept and wished it had one. but really it does. and the creators just left it up to us to figure out. this theory you wrote from the other persons video is a different perspective and refreshing and a good possibility. i also wrote my theory this morning as i literally just learned about it at 3am today as i was on my playstation trying to find games to buy and download. and i was highly intrigued. give my theory a read and tell me what you think.
I think he really was born at the end. Its like.... about reincarnation, whole game is made from abstract pieces of your memories. And that old lady, trying to catch you, like...she is the meaning of age or death. I think that this game is about place between death and birth........Well its can be true becouse of ending. These sounds, thats how i was born. So i can tell you.
omg i would like for you to read the comment i left just now. the theory i came up with in regards to the storyline, since there really is no obvious story line. so far you are the only person who is on the same concept as me.
I'm bummed I missed the stream of this one! This game is super cool! Might have to buy it and check it out myself. Thanks for continuing to showcase awesome indie titles, Gab!
The first ten seconds in and I’ve got serious Inside and Little Nightmares vibes!! I know you mentioned the fact that DARQ is like Inside, but I wasn’t expecting to be wowed so quickly! 💚🤗🤗💚
The inability to read letters and numbers is something that helps with nightmares and lucid dreaming, I believe. When you try to read something, you can't understand it, so you know that it's a dream (unless you have dyslexia/dyscalcula in your waking hours). It's also the reason why you never have your phone in your dreams. Your sleeping mind can't register/understand the screen and numbers/words, so it's omitted from your dream.
Just when I thought that this is just one of those side-scrolling games, it impressed me with the tension and other mechanics. Loved this, though I do wish there's a storyline injected in. So far, what I can make out of it (aside from the puzzle-solving) is that the kid had been going thru various dreaming cycles (dreaming that he's dreaming this dream, where he's also dreaming this other dream ---- thus, the constant OOB experience right after exiting a level. And this explains too why that granny was able to traverse to his bedroom, just as he was about to leave his body once again.) The light at the end is when he has truly woken up from this endless cycle. Makes me wonder though if that kid that's been running around was a symbolic aspect of the MC.
i enjoyed reading your interpretation of what the storyline could be of this game. i enjoy most when game creators leave room for the gamers to figure out. some of the game does help out our personal perspective/theories on what the creator had in mind while making it. so unless some person interviews the creator and he or she personally out right tells us what the story line really is...then all we can do is guess. i also wrote what i thought the story line is this morning.( as i just learned about this game literally this morning at 3am , you should give it a read and tell me what you think.)
Two years late to the party but this is the most impressive side scroller I have ever seen, way more innovative than little nightmares or the other basic creepshow ones. Great job on the playthrough Gab, you made it more fun than if I played it myself frankly.
So glad to see this out finally! I don't remember how I found the creator behind this, but I did and I've been following the development for a while now. I have to wait until the console version comes out, but luckily I have your video to watch until then. There's a character in the game, I don't remember which, but the developer asked his followers what he should be named and I tried my best to get him to call the guy Poop Deck Pappy, but alas, it was not to be.
Omg this game was amazing!! It's beautiful, the atmosphere was really good and the PUZZLES! Damn, they were so clever! New things for every chapter ~ This would have take me hours to finish you're so clever xD
13:50 Yeah. I have that all the time. Or I’m in an apartment I’ve lived in for a long time, bit I’ve never seen that space before. My brain just made it up. Also, my brain makes up odd machines and things that my mind think have an everyday purpose, but it’s not any device I’ve ever seen. Sometimes they surreal creations like HR Giger stuff.
This reminds me of that game where you play a little boy trying to infiltrate a secret science lab and it has a similar playstyle being a side scroller but the boy starts by running away from dogs, then swims through water, you find out the secret lab is implanting chips into people, and the game ends with you meshing with basically a giant meatball made of human skin and you escape from lab with a spotlight on you. I cannot remember the title but I know the game blew up in popularity a couple years ago so if anyone can help, that would be perfect
i used to work in a building in blackfriars road, (near waterloo station, london)way back in the 1970's, it was an old dickensian building with steep stairs, in fact the steps to the top floor (the camera room) were more like a ships ladder. the floors all curved up toward the walls where they had sagged in the middle of the room, and for years i used to have recurring dreams where i would go from one dream, squeeze through a narrow door in this building, and come out in another room in another dream. also for years after i left school i dreamed about sitting outside the headmasters office for not doing my maths homework, and for years after i left uni (1980's) i dreamed i was sitting outside my tutors office having not done my art history homework. brains are funny things.
hey there this is my theory on this game. considering the fact that the character Lloyd comes to a wide door with a light shining in, suggests to me that he is an unborn child. now hear me out you guys....the fact that Llyod has to solve puzzles and he comes into particular characters that remind me of family members, and at the end when he walked through the door you hear a baby cry...all points to my theory. the grandmother in the wheelchair, is sickly looking right? she is wearing a face mask like we have to do today, and she is blind folded. perhaps this is his narc sociopathic grandma in the outside world, who clearly isn't to keen on him being conceived and tries to kill him before he is born and still inside the womb...she's the grandma with ailments and dementia and isn't the type of grandma that greets him with cheek pinching and candy and spoiling of gifts. the instrument male in the wheelchair could possibly represent the father figure who could be big on his dream of being a musician, and the fact he's in a wheelchair represents the fact his career isn't really going anywhere, handicapped if you will. so the father is wondering around aimlessly stuck in limbo trying to make a dream happen that probably will never happen. the woman with the lampshade on her head can possibly represent the older female sibling/the big sister that also isn't to keen on him being conceived. so she tries to kill him with a gun. the blind male walking around mummified with one hand out in front of him could possibly represent the lost older big brother who doesn't know who he is as a person. you guys know the type, the college drop out who has a life crises and makes all the wrong choices that could get him either killed or put in jail. that's who he reminds me of...now when it comes to the surrounding world Lloyd has to interact with, that could very much be a representation of growing inside the mother's womb. everything the mother sees, and encounters Lloyd is also having to deal with. Because in real life that how it somewhat is for a pregnant woman. considering the fact the baby is tethered to the mother everything she feels emotionally and eats and drinks, etc the baby also experiences. if the mother is stressed out so will the baby, so with that in mind i think this game represents that. the fact Lloyd can walk on the walls and ceilings makes me think about the fact a real infant can flip and turn in all angles and directions inside the womb. a real unborn baby feels and the brain waves is very much active....so inside this awesome ass game, its the same thing our main character is doing. when a door slams shut behind him he looks back and shows worry and being scared. the fact the game is grey and dark could very much represent the fact that it's dark inside the womb. towards the end of the game as our main character is running towards the exit and every single family member is now chasing after him to stop him from being born, his surroundings is closing in on him. collapsing in on him, his surrounding falling in around him could be a representation of the womb contracting. a more morbid visual to how in real life the muscles work together to push a baby down and out to the exist. (also look at the fact that Lloyd slides down a long slide, that dictates how in real life the baby is being pushed towards the opening) there are many things that can go wrong during labor and delivery, so many scary possiblities, your child being stillborn, and every time a contraction `takes place a babies heart rate drops. in the game Llyod can get smothered by the falling scene and die. on top of his family members chasing him to prevent him from being born. also i like to point out the hospital scene where the DR. is in a bloody plague mask and tries to prevent his birth. and in the theater scene in the room with the masks, if Lloyd isn't also wearing one they get off the shelf and attack him. i believe that is a clear representation of the world we are living in. BOTH SCENES. the Dr is working on something. that could very much mirror how in real life the medicines and vaccines can be used to alter your dna and they can and do fuck you up with that shit, and its used to keep people sick.....and as for the theater room it can be viewed at how fake the people around us are, everything is a stage, and all the men and women are merely players. your frowned upon if your alternative/different, and don't dance to the same beat as everyone else's drum. in real life we get attacked if we are different. So the fact Llyod has to wear a mask in order to get what he needs out of the room speaks MAD volumes about the real world we live in today. now about the little boy that randomly pops up in the game with a box on his head....he stands out to me as the Guardian angle we know is there for us but we can never really clearly see. we know as a game player that we are going in the right direction because he pops out from behind something and runs ahead. him just being there stand out to me as being the equivalent of seeing number synchronicities in real life. example: 10:10, 12:12, 11:11....for those of you who are into the relevance of numbers and their spiritual meanings....and the fact the little boy is there on the other side of Lloyd as he passes through the gate, makes me feel like he was there to guide Llyod out and made sure he was going to be born. I literally just learned about this game this morning at 3am as i was game shopping on my playstation store app. i see it came out last year, but i didn't know about it till today. and i'm floored with how much gothic beauty and love went into this disturbing twist on reality. i tend to overthink and ponder on things and come up with theories on games and movies that don't really have an obvious story line to it. some games were purposely made with a story line blatantly in your face and the characters interact with one another and the story unfolds. but for games like this, it leaves room for your own interpretation and some of the game actually gives you hints on what the story could be about. to me this isn't just a simple puzzle game where the main character has to fall asleep to go to the next level, i see more than that. how come in other games our character has powers or weapons to fight the bad guys with. but in this one he literally has to keep still and hide from his enemies in order to stay alive. which further makes my case about them actually being a representation of his family members on the outside. an innocent child can not physically attack their family members. they shy away to stay safe. the "dark" dangerous world we live in....we simply have to figure out how to stay alive. which is what Lloyd is doing here. the grandma in the wheelchair that sneaks up behind him to stop him from figuring out the puzzle. seriously makes me think about how some of us in real life has family members that honestly don't want us to succeed and do better than they did. this whole game to me is a twisted representation of life, even seeing things through the unborn child's eyes, on its journey of growing inside the womb to when it comes out. i mean look at the 1st 2 scenes we see when the game starts. Llyod is in his room/his sac/womb, where all he has is the basic necessities. bed and bathroom. (and notice how the clock isn't set on a based time, it goes forward and backwards.) then when Llyod has his outer body experience and manifests into the 1st level, he's in a factory/warehouse....wouldn't be safe to say that's his 1st level of being conceived, considered to be the 1st few weeks or months of his journey?) this game is gorgeous, and cleverly made. it shows how the creator has a deeper mind than the basic or average person that stays "shallow" for lack of a better word. the creator has done me proud. the sound effects are awesome even when Lloyd walks on walls or crosses over into another room, he also moves like he's trying to maintain balance once he walks to another wall or room. this game is frickin amazing! i would have to get this to add to my collection. what do you guys think of my possible theory? sound off below, lets make a nice conversation about it. also i forgot to mention this when i was talking about the sister type character. the fact the character is wearing a lampshade on her head could represent how the "jealous older sister sibling" is the type that wants to keep all the attention on her. notice how it looks like she's dancing as she moves around. and once you invade her limelight "her space" she gets mad and tries to kill you. these are traits of unstable family members. family members with toxic and abusive personalities.
My take on this is that he is a kid on the verge of death, maybe he went to the park and got on an accident in the train and ended up in a comma. The electricity means he is on life support, and the limbs are of those that he lost, the creepy monsters are the patients, doctor, and nurses around him. The part where he is trying to connect the wires with his own body is when he is being revived via defib. The clocks means that his time is running out. The baby crying in the end is him being resurrected.
for me; aside from the reading thing-- i know when i am dreaming, when i constantly have to go to the bathroom. no matter whats going on in the dream, i have the desire to pee. i then wake up to my bladder saying, "now that i have finally woken you up, its time to go to the bathroom!"
Just finished watching yong yea regarding this game's dev rejecting epic exclusivity. And i thought, well i need to check this game up. It is actually interesting. No wonder epic wanted it to be epic exclusive.
geez, only a few minutes in and I can already tell this is a super cool game!! such interesting atmosphere and visuals, Gab definitely plays the most unique and interesting games!
loved the game, it was the perfect length for me. I wonder if the creators dad died or something and this was inspired from that. Anyway thats what I thought it was seeing that it was in a hospital like setting toward the end.
they missed a trick with the ghoul while you're hiding in the cave, if he had mimicked the ghouls walk that would be a smile. extraordinary game - id you do a trek to yomi gameplay? i didn't notice.
Wow what a amazing game now if only it had a comprehensive story to go along with the game play it would have been satisfyingly complete and maybe longer play time yeah .
when the first enemy appeared on screen and you got vaporized for stepping into the circle, i couldn't but wonder why the main character's mind created a lamp lady in a bikini as his first obstacle. then it occurred to me: homie's afraid of enLIGHTened women😂😂😂
This gives me Little Nightmare vibes! Trying to catch up on your different playthroughs, thank you for all you do Gab :)

The sound design in this game is sooo good!

It's made by the same guy who's currently working on Cyberpunk 2077

I love the main character his design is so cool and is animations are fun
Something about the way the character moves reminds me so much of Abe from Oddworld.
if anyone want to play it now its free on epic games store till 6th november
Definitely has that Tim Burton feel to it.
Watching this 2021 cause Gab mentioned it in the Little Nightmares 2 playthrough. : P
geez, only a few minutes in and I can already tell this is a super cool game!! such interesting atmosphere and visuals, Gab definitely plays the most unique and interesting games!
Darq certainly is a quirky little horror game!
Yes love games with cool artstyles
Not even kidding, you got crushed in the game by a wall and then I got an ad for candy crush saga 😂
I'm here from the new DLC video!
Lol the elevator is a mystery, but it's perfectly normal to have the mineshaft in the train X'D
The games these guys make are breathtaking. 😁
Creepy grandmas are the best!!
I’m surprised that you didn’t scream during the jump scares brave girl god bless
Our character looks like a bulgler or a prisoner with the black and white shirt.
You mean a convict?
loved the game, it was the perfect length for me. I wonder if the creators dad died or something and this was inspired from that. Anyway thats what I thought it was seeing that it was in a hospital like setting toward the end.
You should check out ign's dev react to speedrun of darq then.
The creator pretty much tells the origin story of the game there!

i didn't know the area 51 aliens wore black and white stripes
they missed a trick with the ghoul while you're hiding in the cave, if he had mimicked the ghouls walk that would be a smile. extraordinary game - id you do a trek to yomi gameplay? i didn't notice.

Read somewhere that you can see letters/numbers etc. but not really read the words.
Nice! Need to make popcorn
Did you play the dlc? it's free, short(one achievement is for completing it in under 6 minutes) and the last part is... creepy to say the least.
Wow what a amazing game now if only it had a comprehensive story to go along with the game play it would have been satisfyingly complete and maybe longer play time yeah .
Never play this game before. It seem cool game and beautiful graphic ☺👍👍❤.
they missed another trick, the waking up from a nightmare into another nightmare, american werewolf in london style.
I loved this gameplay👍

It's 11.99 on the ps store right now
when the first enemy appeared on screen and you got vaporized for stepping into the circle, i couldn't but wonder why the main character's mind created a lamp lady in a bikini as his first obstacle. then it occurred to me: homie's afraid of enLIGHTened women😂😂😂
D*mn that astral protection ❤
Please play Remanent from the Ashes . its a dark soul type game....very interesting
No ! Not that ! The movement mechanics of the characters are so cozy and unnatural and robotized !!!

Oof
great puzzles, no story.
Game is too unrealistic for my taste, how the hell did they fall asleep as soon as their head hit the bed. ( before you ask yes im joking)
sorry but there's no f-ing way anyone could get through the circular maze. up to this point the game was genius but this jump-scare maze is total BS!
