    The main theme that is prevalent in all of these films is that even in a world where the dead are returning to eat the living, the biggest threat is human nature.

    I think I've watched this episode, alone, at least 10 times, over the years.

    I feel bad for Miguel in a sense - he’s a truly broken man. I agree that Dr “Frankenstein” is a confident egotistical goader and example of the road to hell is made with good intention, so I kinda empathize a bit with Rhodes when he calls him out for killing his soldiers. But it’s Sarah who is the truly realistic and sympathetic one.

      I fear I'd end up like Miguel if an actual zombie apocalypse ever happened, I'm overweight so I'd probably be one of the first to go.

    The most claustrophobic of the 3 films, and the most depressing as well. I guess that's why it's my favorite. I grew up watching Day on Cinemax.

    • @Galantski
      @Galantski 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yeah, agreed. I think for the reasons you give it has something of a John Carpenter's _The Thing_ feel to it. There's nowhere for them to go, and they start going a bit crazy and end up fighting each other as much as they're fighting the zombies. We need to store these reviews underground before the copyright zombies get them. I'm not much of a film buff compared to you guys or a lot of the shelfers but I'd say that overall this is probably the best film of the original three on a technical level, like the zombie makeup, the effects, editing etc. Plus Joe Pilato is amazing.

    Miguel was may favorite character. He had the most emotional depth and was portrayed excellently, by the actor.

    • @kramalerav
      @kramalerav ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. Some fans deride the character for being overly whiney. But the actor did a great job portraying the character where the performance implies a good backstory. Before the apocalypse, Miguel was probably a wealthy sophisticated type who led an adventurer playboy lifestyle. An arrogant ladies man. But when the shit really went down, he signed up into service to survive..and then found out what he was truly made of; and he completely deteriorated when confronted with the grim realities of societal collapse.

      I just don’t know about that. Day of the Dead is very much a classic of the zombie horror sub-genre. And it’s been heavily reviewed. If you mean that it hasn’t garnered the horror movie acclaim that Psycho or Alien have, then okay.

    I know that there are some people who don't think Sara is an interesting character, but holy cow, I don't know what movie those people are watching. She reminds me so much of Jill Valentine (I guess in the reverse sense since Sara came first, but regardless) from Resident Evil 3 on. She is obviously tired, experiencing some serious PTSD, and just trying to hold it together. Her character growth moments throughout the film, such as the moment when she is talking with Terry Alexander's character, John, or the scene when she has to cut off Miguel's arm, the scene where she starts crying, the nightmare sequences. They all show a woman who is trying so hard to acclimate to this world, but is struggling with it.
    I wish Hollywood still wrote female characters like this.

    This was the only one of these Romero films I'd seen up until maybe2004. I rented this from the back catalogue at whatever company had currently tried to conglomerate and revitalize the movie rental industry competitors of blockbuster as both died. But the cover grabbed me and wow, what a film, must have watched it five times before I returned it. Caught the other ones eventually, but they yeah, they still have hope. great movie.

    Stellar review guys.
    The practical fx in this movie still hold up extremely well nearly 40 years later, that's testament to how good they really are.
    It's bleak, as it should be, it's the end of Humanity after all.
    The direction is brilliant throughout, emphasising the characters and events in detail, focusing on what's important for the viewer to take in.
    The characters are just great, each having their own traits that make them individuals, and the conflicts within the closed group setting brings out the best (or worst) of each individual.
    It may not be the movie we wanted, but it's the movie we needed.
    Rest in peace George.
    The Horror Genre ows you a great debt that can never be repaid.

So if anyone would try to rip your head off, you will sound like this (it is the same effect if you tune a string instrument). BTW - OUTSTANDING WORK GUYS!!! The lowest grossing film in George A. Romero's "Dead" trilogy. Nonetheless, it's gained a cult following over the last three decades.
    The alarm sound heard is the same one from The Thing (1982).
    On the special edition DVD, director George A. Romero claims this is his favourite film out of the original "dead trilogy".
    Most of the zombie extras in this film were Pittsburgh residents who volunteered to help in the film.
    Real pig intestines were used during the gore scenes.
    During Miguel's sedation, Lori Cardille told Anthony Dileo Jr. to actually slap her to make it look more authentic.
    During the opening dream sequence when zombie arms attack Sarah through the wall, one of them was Lori Cardille's husband.
    In Night of the Living Dead (1968) no one survived from the house. In Dawn of the Dead (1978), Peter and Francine survive. In this film, Sarah, John and McDermott survive
    Right after Logan tells the zombie that it needs to sit in the dark and think about what it did, and punishes it by turning off the light, a little bit of the "The Gonk" music from Dawn of the Dead (1978) can be heard in the transition of scenes.
    Pat Logan, who played Uncle Rege in Night of the Living Dead (1990) appears as a Bald Mustachioed Zombie shot by Steel in the mines.
    The book Dr. Logan gives to Bub is Stephen King's "Salem's Lot." George A. Romero and King have been friends for many years.

  • @mainwaring1975
    @mainwaring1975 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    this is my view of the ending. Sarah's dreams play a big part through the whole film. When she is on the beach at the end she is reliving what happened, the hands coming out of the helicopter are the dream part, hence they really escaped and ended up on the island at the end.

Rounding off the appocalypse to a nice coclusion, DOTD stands the test of time and earns it's place as the finale to the perfect Zombie trilogy.

    I LOVE these two and agree whole heartedly w/most all of their reviews! SO glad I stumbled upon this site.
    Same feeling as having an initial letdown when I saw "Day"., but alot of that has to do w/being a young kid at the time. This film got better and better the more times I watched it. Finally as an adult, it went from grinding through all of the dialogue etc. to get to a banger of an ending......to a masterpiece that keeps me invested the entire way through. The Romero trilogy IS the zombie genre to me, these two awesome reviewers and so many more. The more I watch and appreciate these 3 films and the world that George built, the more puzzling and seemingly impossible it seems just how much air this genius got in jumping his zombified shark! WTF?!

    1:30 Dear Off The Shelves channel viewers! Knightriders!
    I've just seen this movie 2 weeks ago.
    I think it was bit too long, however I was positively surprised by it.
    Again Romero gave us an interesting story, and a bunch of very likeable characters.
    I can see why it was not a success, and why it is so overlookd in his filmography.
    Still if you're a fan of Romero, and haven't seen it yet, give it a try, it is a good movie overall.
    And I am sure you have not seen a movie like this before :)

    I love your Dawn Of The Dead Shirt, it reminds me of a piece concept artwork for Resident Evil 2 (1998). I also love the artwork of, Zombie Stephen on your shirt. I find it to be good, and scary. I like John, Bill, Sarah, and Bub. Gosh I just hated Captain Rhodes, and his cronies. I so very glad that assclowns, got what they deserved. Dr. Logan Frankenstein wasn't that bad but, he wasn't my favorite non villainous character of the movie.

    There are a few things about the practical effects in this movie (and others) that bother me, looking back. While most of the gore here was over the top and really well executed, I hate when bodies are getting ripped apart and you see the skin stretching like playdough. I know it's rubber prosthetics, but it takes me right out of it when I see that. The skin would pull apart much sooner than the rubber we see in these effects. Also, when the actor isn't angled correctly on the floor and it's so obvious that the body being dismembered isn't his own. That was not a problem as much in this film except right at that last shot where Sarge or whatever his name is got ripped apart. The other body dismemberments were great, but that one was so fake looking, coupled with elastic skin. haha

      That’s what sucks about watching older films with high-definition viewing quality: special effects become much more scrutable, even if you realized that before all that.

    I've read the full Day of the Dead script that was not filmed. It was ...crap. It might have been a good movie, but Romero was always best with a small budget, which forced him to be more creative.

    The actor who plays Bub is Paul Harrell. He has a kick-ass YT channel on guns.

    Someone should do a graphic novel from George's original Day of the Dead script.

      Nah, it wouldn't be that good. The script itself is really mediocre.

    Greg Nicotero worked on the special effects too, not just Savini alone.
    P.S. Great movie.

    Thank you for reviewing my favorite zombie film. While I liked dawn of the dead, I just adore day of the dead. It was the first zombie movie I ever saw at 7 yrs old and I fell in love with the genre ever since.
