I agree about studying recordings. It is important to listen to many different saxophone players recordings to find out how they play and try to play along with the recordings and find and develop a tone you like from them. That really helps in figuring out what sound you want.
I have been playing alto sax for nearly 2 years. I was drawn to it as I had listened to many recordings of Paul Desmond and loved his almost soprano like tone he had on alto and at first I thought I'd like to sound like him, then for a while I didn't and after constant practise for several hours a day, nearly every day since I started and listening to many saxophone recordings. I never liked a bright, edgy or airy sound, especially on alto. I prefer a warmer, focused tone. Despite still being a long way off yet I finally figured what I wanted only about 3 months ago, and I am slowly working on getting closer to getting the tone I want. I am looking for a smooth centered tone, like classical but a little brighter and I want it to be bit like a cross between Paul Desmond, Dr Eugene Rousseau's and Rudy Wiedoeft's tone.

I want to sound line Trane but on a trumpet. I think it’s impossible. That’s what makes it interesting. Even better : I want to phrase like Trane but with the sound of Chet Baker - or to be even more precise, the sound he had on his last concerts, specially the Live in Tokyo - I call it « the dark light », if you dig it... that said, I only have 1 year of playing so I guess I may never reach this - but somewhere on the road I’ll find my sound :-)

Not many musicians (and artists, in general) the I respect more than Mr. Bartz. Any interview I can find featuring him, I listen to it. He always has lots of common sense wisdom to share.

I used to play like Louis Armstrong until a friend of mine told me find my own sound. I don't like my sound. It sounds dull to my ears. I always wanted to sounds like Al Hirt in the 1960s but it never came to be no matter how much I'd practice. Stuck with a dull sound.

Sometimes what may sound dull to you is engaging to your audience, kind of like how we hate the sound of our own voice when we hear it recorded.

Its funny I am a guitar player and I love other guitar players BUT I just love listening to horn players! Hank Mobley wow! Gene Ammons so good !! this tutorial is so true. It would be fun to hang out with a horn player for couple of months working through lead sheets and setting out the chord charts, great video.
