I'm down in Melbourne, Australia and if I go out into the backyard at night, looking up towards the right of my house, it's easy to find. It's kind of like an old friend in the sky☺️
Thank you. I Live in Southern Africa, Zambia in particular. Iam able to see most of the Southern Constellations like Crux, Centurus, Carina, Mensa, Lupus, Octans , Pavo and Tucana Constellations. It's beautiful ❤️.
So excite to see this video! Seeing the Crux, Southern Cross, has been on my bucket list for a long time. I leave June 3, 2023 for a 3 week trip to Zambia and I so hope to finally see this constellation. Thank you for preparing this most helpful video.
I have always wanted to see Crux after reading about it in H.A.Rey's "The Stars". While in southwest Florida just after Christmas I had an excellent, unobstructed view of the Southern horizon. I woke up at 6:00 AM, just before sunrise, and saw the northernmost bright star in Crux. It was also cool to see Archernar, a surprisingly bright star in the otherwise unremarkable Eridanus. I saw this in Hawaii as well last October. And, of course, it is so cool to see Canopus, low on the horizon as it is, in southern Florida. Being from New England, I only read about these stars. It's remarkable how much the night sky that I take for granted can change over the latitudes. Now living in Northern California, the Big Dipper actually sets here! But, Orion and Canis Major are so much higher in the southern sky! Thank you for your videos. Very well done!!!
Thank you! I'm in NSW Australia and I can clearly see with my eyes, the Crux constellation with the nearby two bright stars of Centaurus. Most nights I could see the whole of the Orion constellation too. Excellent field of study which I believe will come into greater popularity as the years go by.
Thank you for your message. In the future I want to spend time living in the Southern Hemisphere so I can become more familiar with what the star look like from that viewpoint. I didn’t realize that Orion can be seen all year round...so cool!
@@misheckwams9748 thanks for sharing .I don't know much about stars, but if you are on a sphere globe,in the south, how come you can see the orion in the north?? Keep looking up!

It's amazing to see the Southern Cross I live in the Northern Hemisphere. we have Polaris ,but in general, the stars in the Southern Hemisphere are amazing.
I live in Ecuador, tonight the stars were particularly bright... So I started to look to the sky to see if I was able to recognize any constellation. I wasn't, then I saw your Crux video and immediately saw it. Then I could also see Centaurus and the Pleiades. Thank you very much, it was beautiful
Thank you for your video! I hope you are a teacher in real life - as I feel like I've learned a tremendous amount more about the Southern Cross & Alpha Centauri than I knew before watching your video! What you said, how you said it, and the order in which you presented it, made perfect logical sense to me! Thank you again! :)
I live in central Peru and Southern Cross is visible during summer and fall. Even with light pollution the pattern is very clear, along with Alpha and Beta Centauri. I would love a video about Centaurus but specially about former constellation Argo Navis (this one is also visible during summer, but to me it is incredibly difficult to spot "the ship"). Great channel, congrats!!
I've actually have two videos on Centaurus coming out in the next couple of week. I am always a bit nervous to do video on constellations in the southern hemisphere since I don't live there (only visited). I haven't thought about doing extinct constellations...what a good idea! Adding it to the list.
@@learnthesky Looking forward for the Centaurus videos! There are great places to watch stars either in Peru or Northern Chile (where most scientific observatories are located in South America). Anywhere near the Atacama Desert, it's a great spot. Thanks for planning on the extinct constelattions! I only get to identify Canopus in Argo Navis (even though there are lots of stars around it), I simply don't see the pattern.
I miss this one as I was brought up in South Africa but live in England now and know the Southern Cross well but the last time I saw it was when I was in New Zealand in 2017.I was reading that at the time Stonehenge was built it was above the horizon in southern England. When I was in Belize in 2015 somebody pointed it out to me and I didn't have the heart to point out that they where pointing out the False Cross!
Good explanation. Here in Australia there are 2 constellations that practically everyone knows: the Southern Cross, and the Big Saucepan. The Big Saucepan is actually Orion, but we see it upside down, so the sword of Orion is the handle of the Saucepan.
A long term goal of mine is to be able to spend time in the southern hemisphere and view the constellations. I've seen pictures, but I want to see it myself. Thank you for sharing.
You can actually see it in Key West, FL in late April (like around the 24-26 at local midnight) which makes it a maximum of +25 north latitude during it's culmination. However, you'll need really good visibility and conditions to see it.
If a traveler is located more than 20 degrees north latitude, wants to travel south but cannot see the Southern Cross, he or she can simply find the North Star first, and then travel towards the opposite direction. East Asia traders in early modern times might have used this method to journey around the great wild (present day Hubei) towards Hong Kong. Being able to see the Southern Cross just above the horizon is also an indicator that Hong Kong should be only miles away.
Really gutted I can't see Alpha, you are so lucky in the south to get to view this any night you like. UK is not only in the north but also cloudy 90% of the time!
What is funny for me is that I only recently discovered this constellation while in Hawaii. So for years I could actually see Alpha Centauri, but I wasn’t aware of it. I felt silly that is took me so long to find it.
Here in Brazil it is visible practically all the year , together with Orion (tres Marias), they are the most beautiful constellations in my understanding.....
i was flirting with a girl i met; she lives in the southern hemisphere, I in the north, but we met abroad; by talking about the different constellations we each could see once in our own respective countries crux was the first one she ever pointed out to me in the pictures of her skies that she sent to me good times, i’ve never had that much fun talking to a girl before
