- Payapang Daigdig is undoubtedly one of the most popular tagalog 'Christmas hymn' to date. No collection of classic Filipino Christmas carols is ever complete without this song in it. It has even been regarded as the 'Silent Night' of the Philippines, though there is no clear reference about Christmas in the lyrics.
The fact is 'Payapang Daigdig' was not intended as a Christmas hymn. It was written by the Felipe de Leon one morning during the Second World War (1945) after witnessing the bombings that leveled the whole city of Manila.
The mood that Felipe wanted to imbue in the music and lyrics clearly resembles the atmosphere at the time when Christ was born in Bethlehem. There was peace and tranquility amidst uncertainty. It is probably how the early listeners were able to identify 'Payapang Daigdig' with Christmas.
This is the first video that I made from scratch since I could not find an image with a good resolution that would capture the true spirit of the song. I hope you enjoy it the way I enjoyed making it.

It was actually composed after a great destruction of WW2 in Manila... The composer was at the top of Manila hall looking at the silence of the night while composing the song.
Wow...that made this song even more emotional yet melancholic.. So many works of art were actually created during the ww2 aftermath. I guess i was people's way of coping

i heard the eldest son of the late national artist Felipe de Leon Sr. talk about his father's composition in a recent webinar. according to the son Prof Jun (in whose Humanities I class, btw, i sat as a young student in the 1970s), his father was inspired by the ending of WWII & the establishment of the UN thereafter; the composer made this song with so much hope for peace, world peace. note the 'structure of hope' in this hymn.
This was suggested to be true (as it would be a somewhat nice to have it be patriotic wouldn't it?), but it was composed to commemorate the creation of United Nations. th-cam.com/video/XWl1KtdR3z0/w-d-xo.html

Thanks for this. I sang Alto 2 on this recording. We recorded it 20 years ago - and Marianne’s voice still sounds like this up to now. I never tire of listening to this.

brings me back 3 years ago when we sang this in church choir. i was the pianist. because of the pandemic, the choir was on hiatus. just a few weeks ago, were back in business serving God! preparing for Christmas lineup now cos ber months lol

It's 1 am and I remember my mum used to sing this as a lullaby to us... Without knowing this became my comfort song... It brings me back to my childhood na walang inaalala, masaya lang.

Miracle in cell number 7 😭
The claim that this was not originally a christmas song and that this was composed by F. de Leon after witnessing the bombings of Metro Manila during WW II has already been debunked by the composer's son, in one episode of PLAKA (Dec. 29, 2020) de Leon said that this song was composed in 1946 to commemorate the creation of UN (which the composer hoped to be a catalyst that will bring peace to the world hence the title). This version arranged by Lucio San Pedro omitted the 2nd part of the song which mentioned the birth of Christ.
