the fact that lolorito gets to live and keep his place on the syndicate will never not fill me with rage. he faced....actually no consequences at all now that i think about it. maybe im misremembering but i doubt it. the idea that he's an evil that just has to be put up with is insane- ul'dah can survive, can thrive, without him. personally i don't like that yotsuyu dies but that might be a symptom of ffxiv killing off their major female characters all the time, plus every other villain got to live, one way or another
This is a fantastic video, summarizing all of my issues and dislikes about the story/themes but with a lot less of me going "UUUGH IT'S SO STUPID" lol thank you so much
REALLY good and encompassing video, I hadn't even noticed Doma's lack of cultural identity and history. But I disagree with the conclusion on Zenos; he may not stand for Garlean beliefs like, say, Varis or Gaius, but he believes them. He calls Ala Mhighans "savages," sees anyone who isn't Garlean as a beast. That's one thing about fascists (and, tbh, a lot of bigoted behaviors) - they don't believe in being constructive for their people, so much as believing they have the right to hurt all of those they consider Other, and I see that embodiment of oppressive violence in Zenos.
They should have made it so you just missed him , and he hears about your character and hopes to face them , and when he does it's the final fight against him in the game
Hello!! I think this is a great video that really does a good job illustrating some of my problems with the expansion, mainly with the scale of Doma and with colorism in the game(as a side note I think that colorism is actually a very large problem with the series as a whole, such as Barrett getting sidelined for a large amount of the compilation of FFVII, and Sazh basically having no presence in the XIII sequels) Oberall I think you did a great job with this video.
When you brought up colorism I had sudden flashbacks to the Archer questline - where the pale as sin KotM Miqo'te archer companion tries to join her KotM sisters and Pawah Mujuuk - a very dark skinned Miqo'te, is written as nasty and violent and imminently tries to kill her when she doesn't want to kill you. I always found it distasteful Lyse didn't want to be a leader and in wearing her sister's clothes, says they don't suit her / represent her - and yet she's forced to take on the role and clothing of her dead sister instead of having her own. Thanks, Square, I hate it.
I love Lyse (I also do recognize and do often criticize the Colorism on Square's part with her and the Highlander models and Yshtola for that matter like you also said.) but gosh I like your idea WAY better! Have Yda fill the mentor role after Papalymo's death and have the big reveal being that Yda has a sister who she's been working on Liberating Ala Mhigo with as some sort of plan after Yda had to flee Ala Mhigo without Lyse after getting on a wanted list for one of many reasons. And you could keep Lyse virtually the same, finding out she feels like she can never live up to her Sister's past deeds as she tries to emulate her and feeling like she was only "a backup plan" that feels disconnected from her culture too because she was too young to remember an Ala Mhigo not at war and or ALSO had to flee and got separated from Yda. It really would have been so much more impactful with Yda there (like we could have seen her giving Lyse the dress even and having them have a moment!) and would have given us that Dark skinned female lead.
fjdhdjs accidentally disliked the video I'm sorry but legit, this is excellent. Thoroughly explains my dissatisfaction with the expansion and exposes a lot of underlying issues in general with FFXIV and colorism. Thank you!
this is an AMAZING video! Thank you so much for making this, it just really.... says everything I thought about SB but couldn't put into words. The whole Tsuyu arc irked me for the longest time as someone who had Yotsuyu as her favorite villain, but I could never explain why! and you just completely nailed it! Anyways good job 10/10 i hope a comment will help with the algorithm because you deserve it
theres this obsession with neoliberal ideas and concepts about the middle east from Japanese writers… I’m assuming having occident ideologies means you also inherent the racist orientalist stereotypes… gundam 00 is a great example as the protagonist is self hating and the middle east issue is once again portrait as them stuck in a loop where they’re the only force despite real life western intervention Note the conflict ends in gundam 00 by a european nuking the entire middle east leaving only 8 natives left living somewhere else.
What kills me most about the Steepe are the number of people I watch play who are OFFENDED that the WoL is stuck doing chores to get on these people's good side. Um...you just showed up out of nowhere wanting to compete for control of their government so you can make them fight in a war they have nothing to do with...sheer the damn sheep.
Well I gotta say, this Recontextulized a lot of stormblood for me, and yeah hoo boy. Though the stuff about lolorito I always thought, like come on guys this dude is obviously a bad person. Great video btw
I heavily miss stormblood. It was a memorable expansion even if people say otherwise. And the areas are collectively better than other areas (I did not really like ShB aesthetically at all. My preference is SB).
@@ffffdsd same as Amh Araeng and Kholusia.stormblood had interesting characters like Fordola,Yutsuyu,Hien,Magnai, Zenos.Who was interesting in SHB besides Emet-Selch and Graha Tia?thancred, yshtola and urianger evolved ok,but thats it.ranjit was really boring, lord vauthry was funny, but not what i expected being a dark villain. The whole story is dull and predictable in SHB - free every area from sin eaters to meet the ascians.everything in this expansion except some informations told about the ascians is so meaningless, we fight for a world just because if we do not, the eigth calamity will happen.the only interesting part for me was the end in Amaurot and the after story. in stormblood every part except the ruby sea is far more emotional. you felt like a part of the revolution, fighting battles on multiple fronts as Ala Mhigo, or doma castle.and dont forget the amazing duels against "classic" zenos and later on the fight against shinryu. the scene on the balcony of ala mhigo palace is unforgettable
"Did she need to be innocent for her abuse to matter?" I got chills.

You didn't even mention the horrible mechanics of scripted losses to Zenos no matter how well you do against him.
They should have made it so you just missed him , and he hears about your character and hopes to face them , and when he does it's the final fight against him in the game

this was interesting even if I am not familar with Final Fantasy 14.
thanks for making and sharing

Interesting stuff! Are you planning to do an Endwalker video too once it comes out?
I am! I'll be doing one on shadowbringers in a couple of weeks, and then endwalker once i've played through the whole thing.

the idea of having a foreign ally with the steppe is realistic… but it never caught up with orientalist scientist

Nothing is wrong with Stormblood, it was the peak of FFXIV
