heatrhrink doesn't come in enough sizes and colors to be really effective for this. The thing to worry about with electrical tape is that it leaves awful residue on your cables if removed after awhile. i don't know about the paper tape you're using. Masking tapes vary wildly. Blue painter's tape is one of the better adhesive formulas for removing later. Unfortunately blue painter's tape is just blue colored masking tape so the knock-off brands have been all over the place.
Being into anything resembling production, you'll have used real gaffer's tape. Gaffer's tape is designed to stick well until peeled away, then to come off easily. It's different than duct tape in that regard. I had some cheap gaffer's tape peel the paint off a door frame after using it for holiday lights. Indoor. That wasn't fun, so even cheap gaffer's tape isn't a guarantee. That said it left no gummy residue on my cables so there's that!
What you've got might be the best non-specialized solution.
The tape has been working well for me so far. And of course other people may find other solutions and there's been a couple good recommendations in the comments.
Srink tubing might be easier and a bit more permanent, as i fiund tabe can come off over time and leave a sticky residue.
I mention hear shrink tubing, and the reason why I didn't select it
How we do it in "AV" is printed label stickers wrap around the cable using either a DYNO Label maker (expensive device) or printed 1/4in label sheets (adding color and words to the label). So you can make any naming convention you want. We label where a plug goes (DA4 IN 1) ect. But in your case you want where the cable is from and with printed label sheets you can also set up the color tape indicating where its from and then also words where it should be. in case it gets unplugged by accident or like in your case..... Re-running a huge rat nest of wires Lol jk we all struggle with wire and you've got a nice setup. Using those labels myself id give it a 7 out of 10 because there's a small learning curve on how to apply them and a large one how to pick the sticker off the sheet.
In larger installations labeled cables are indeed the way to go.
I, and I think many beginning streamers, have different setups with each gig, we also reconfigure things, so I find it useful to see the two ends at a glance. Red. Where's the other end of red? Ah. Input 4.
Next week, it might be the blue cable. :)
HDMI to Ethernet adapter :)
