Getting this on replay. Many thanks for posting !
I love how so many people watch from all over the world! Both sides of the equator! Technology is wonderful when it works😊. Thank goodness for it or we wouldnt be learning all the geology we're learning. Appreciate it.
It would be very special to have some activity while you are there! Plenty to see, regardless.
Hope you have a wonderful time. Will be thinking of all of you. Hi to Amanda Jo!!
Nice to hear from you again.
Thank you so much for the update and masterclass today . Safe travels on your upcoming trip. ❤
Just rode my MTB on Antelope Islamd and saw all these rocks and thought about Shawn’s videos on the Island.
thanks for the update
Ashland, KY, catching on the replay :)
Always enjoy your insight. 👍
Loved the update on Hawaii and Iceland. Have an awesome trip.
Couldn’t be here for the live. Tomorrow I’ll be hiking the Etna to get my “volcano fix” since we can hike near this Icelandic Volcano lol. Keep up the good work informing us about the events in the Reykjane peninsula….
Vancouver Island here
Have a fantastic tie on your trip soon to Iceland, please do keep safe whilst you are there xx
The interview with Dr. Greg Stock was most interesting - thanks for doing that.
I am really excited about your Iceland trip! The odds are in your favor!
I'm rewatching your last post. Saw it the morning on my tv but don't have the ability to "lik" your posts there so I'm rewatching it now. LIKE LIKE LIKE! I'm really looking forward to your new stuff from Iceland, etc. So glad we found your channel. 8-)
Sugar Land Texas.,.. caught you after work thanks for the update. Have a great trip 😊
Thanks again @shawnwillsey for this informative update! Your insights are always much appreciated :) And thank you @MandieJo and Susan Helmer for answering questions and moderating the chat at the same time, great job ladies! :) I read in an Icelandic news article this morning that work on the new defense wall in Grindavík is going well (it should take 2 to 3 weeks in total) with 30 to 35 people working during day shifts, fewer during night shifts. The new wall is expected to be approximately 5 meters high and 800 meters to 1 km long. Icelanders are amazing!!
Indeed they are.
Great livestream again Shawn 👍. Wishing you all the best for your Iceland trip 🌋🌋
Thanks Shawn. 🙂👍
Thanks Shawn. So interesting. Wonder what the future will be. These poor people. Glad Amandajo is settled in her new house.
Thanks for all of your hard work man!
See and hear you loud and clear, Shawn!
Article states "Volcanoes the best area for eruptions", then Shawn says "agreed". Just the way you said it made me laugh way too much.
Greetings from France, team! Thank you for your always informative and rich in content updates,Shawn! Nice to say hi to Amanda Jo ! Hopefully everyone is doing great there!
Gratefull to have your updates and keeping In track with the important news, thankfully you are there personally to provide us with all this wonderful content, keep the good work team!
I started on the live but was at work, and sadly had to actually work 😂😂 Watching now at home. I look forward to new Random Road Cuts, and further interviews and, basically any video you put up! Safe travels to Iceland. ❤
Thanks for bringing up Snowball Earth. I don't think that we hear enough about the indicators of those events. Maybe you could do something on that if eruptions ever wane sometime soon.
Have a good trip and enjoy it
Looking forward to your insight,
from Michigan.
Hi Susan from Ontario, Canada
thank you for the update Shawn
5X5 on the replay, lol
(Just recovered my cig lighter from the innards of the clothes dryer after dropping it down the lint trap.
Funny how I took 14 screws out, but only had 13 for reassembly🤥)
good to see you and the update thanks
Wonderful update again. Thank you so much for your time and effort.
Will you be meeting up with Gylfi while you are in Iceland?
Everything looks great
Coming home from bird and eagle owl ringing, now watching the replay
Thank you for sharing 🙏
I just noticed that Grindavik (the navy towers perhaps ?) are the centre in Iceland for broadcasting the Maritime Safety Information ... a crucial safety apparatus in that part of the North Atlantic. Thought the name rang a distant bell 😊 !
Looking forward to your road cuts and interesting recycling videos! Good Job!
Interesting & glad you're on
Love your channel Shawn
Have a great working trip to Iceland, I’m jelly 😊
Loud and clear
Yes, I can see you and your students.
Go with the flow, for your trip is just so accurate haha. Cant wait to see what you get up to. ❤️✌️👍
Thanks
Hi From New Mexico
I can see and hear you Shawn.
Aloha from Makaha
There is a great shot on one of the drone flights (I see them all so they blend together) of the lava lake side of the the tunnel in from the cone. It also shows the inner walls of the lava lake/levee system. It looks like it plugged on the cone side. The lower flow field gas plumes have subsided, and there are no longer any glow down near the berms so that system of tubes has drained out.
Hi Shawn. Thought you might cover my question regarding the uplift increasing the magma Chambers storage capacity, as every time there is a eruption there's a drop, but the drop only partially returns to the preceeding level. Hence the chamber has to be getting larger in capacity.???
Since the lava flow has waned, can you discuss what the fissures that went through Grindavik will mean for the future of the town? Will it cause the middle of the town to continue to drop as the plates continue to separate? Or as the plate shift continues, will it increase the likelihood that magma will find its way back under the town, causing lava to eventually flow directly in town? Also, what are the chances that with the magma chambers continuing to inflate under the power station, that the next eruption will occur there?
@𒁕𒊑𒉣𒈨
You had asked:
> How high do you have to jump to set off a mini quake.
I found an answer:
"If the spectator of 60kg in weight jumped 10cm, energy a spectator:
60 Kg×0.1 m×9.8 kg/s^2 = It becomes 59J.
If 55000 spectators have this energy all together, the entire energy :
59 It becomes J×55000 person = about 3.2 million J.
This corresponds into the energy of the earthquake of about magnitude 1.1"
[This was calculated based on 55000 spectators in a stadium, hence the odd person count and the use of the term "spectator".]
It's perfect Shawn

I like the connection between Icelandic and NA Westcoast tectonics. I can attest the midwest US kicks ass! Business is good and gas is cheap. Will there be a direct temporal relationship between the Atlantic spreading center movement and Farallon subduction/PNW Clockwise rotation/San Andres slip?
Go to Grimsey Island in Iceland such a beautiful tiny Island

A question that came to mind as you were going over the earthquake data from Hawai'i:
Some of the earthquakes are clearly marked as having occurred at a "negative depth". Two explanations that quickly came to mind to explain this: (1) the depth is given relative to sea level (or other specific altitude), rather than depth relative to the local ground level, (2) the depth is an estimate and the magnitude of the error in this measurement is such the best estimate for the location of the earthquake is actually above the local ground level.
The second posed explanation above brought to mind another question: how accurate are the earthquake focus determinations? What sort of scale would we be talking about? Is it 100's of meters or 10's of meters, or something like that? Is the depth estimate better or worse than the horizontal estimate?
Thanks.
Thanx Shawn i`m a little bit late ;-)
"Snowball Earth, really cool ..." yuk, yuk
Thanks for adding the chapter breaks/links.
yes
49:49 Is there a fifth possibility that inflation simply stops?
Anyone know what happened to the Iceland multi view live chat 💬 😭.
Thanks Shawn for another good stream 🙌🔥
@seanfillingham52 this eruption is officially over, which is why LFI closed the chat... until the next event starts! ;)
No, but my guess would be that the activity doesn't warrant the 24/7 moderation that would be needed.
can you send a link of the 360 degree of the lava field that you showed near the end of your podcast....Mahalo
@poppawolf26 you'll find the link in the video description: "360-degree view of eruption" :)
Any problem with sulfur from volcano for those allergic to sulfites or sulfates
"Snow ball earth was a kewl event" - yeah right
Am from Ireland
that volcanologists seems to be hoping that the next eruption moves over to Eldvorp because there is no infrastructure?.......is it wishful thinking or based on what data?....there was mention of plate boundaries I believe....as you inferred there are no earthquakes in that region so far...
❤❤❤
Could the shift in the INSAR data be due to the inflated lava accumulation on the surface? That trend should in theory show up in this measurement overlayed on the magma chamber inflation, no?
How many PSI do most eruptions reach?
Snowball earth: "really kind of cool event in earth's history...." ❄😂

Still pretty cold in Idaho Falls, 63 degrees F this afternoon. I walked to the post office at 10 PM last night and had to keep my jacket zipped, but it is supposed to be warm tomorrow.
