  • HI all,
this video with Steve (VK2UD) was shot on our last outing at Bylong 4x4 park to show the the oztent(rhino) foxwing awning and the 30 second awning side by side.
What they're both like to set up and break down.
Plus anything else we noticed along the way and our opinions on our purchases.

The rare occasion when being a pocket rocket has its disadvantages. The rain downpipe can be a lifesaver when in the outback with little water. Like the idea of speed on the 30-second job ( 30 S) and being able to move the vehicle with the awning up. quick setup for a cuppa is an advantage. Drop-down poles are ideal on the 30 S. The low profile Bag is good when traveling, however, the extra storage space in the 30 S is beneficial. Both models require brute strength in the roof racks for good anchorage. Great comparisons guys, Thank you. Cheers from Michael.Australia.

you've got that right on the weight perspective. I bet a few of these have been mounted on sub standard racks or support and have separated from the vehicles :) Everything is a compromise I guess, but at the end of the day, both of us were happy with our choices even though they weren't perfect. and yes, having ducks disease can bite too but there's ways and means

I can't say I've had any experience with them, so whilst it may very well be true, I can't tell what I haven't seen.
That's kinda the motto of my channel really, whilst I like to hear people opinions and listen with interest, I'd much prefer to see people do it or put it into practice.
Opinions are great but lets find out first hand .
That said, when someone give me info like you just have, I'm sure as shit going to check it out and do some research on them. Never let an opportunity to learn something new go by.
Does national lunar go under another name as well. I have heard the name but I think on US channels and was thinking they were the same as dometic ? which is the same as Waeco here in Aus ?
Am I wrong with this one ?
Oh and watch out for the Aussies saying that, I reckon they would put their ARB and Engel fridges up against your National Lunars :) but again, I've not had one of those either

Very good video mate! I just got a second hand foxwing for a great price and is still in good nick! The series one bag does look a little bit tight but they have released replacement bags on the series 2 that can also fit the series one which to me is a game changer because the poles and pegs can be stored inside and there’s more space on the bag to zip up! Something you should review mate would love to see how it goes for you! I appreciate how oztent put thought into the bag as they have heard everyone’s feedback with the tightness of the bag!

Yeah I spotted the updated model. I even shot them an email asking if I could borrow one either direct or from a retailer to do a review as a follow up. I didn't get a response back. But yes I noticed they seemed to have taken the feedback and made the right changes.

I have come to the conclusion that Steve's 30 second awning wins first prize in this video in my opinion. I think having one leg in the passenger side window whilst the other leg is on the side step out side the vehicle is a disaster waiting to happen (If you slip your balls will get crunched) and along with the amount of climbing around the vehicle just to set-up and pack-up would drive me bloody mad every day. The Foxwing certainly doesn't look as sturdy free standing compared to the 30 second awning as well. I thank you both for sharing this comparison with us on you tube as i am going to be purchasing a 270 degree awning's and it is good to get some feedback on all types of awning's.

    • @DENMONKEY
      @DENMONKEY  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Craig, yes, i think the set up it a bit easier on the 30second version but don't let the climbing over the vehicle put you off.
That's more of a short a$$ thing than an issue with the awning. If I had more let under my backside and could reach like a normal person, that wouldn't be require. I'm 5'4 for reference.
I wouldn't use my foxwing in anything but the lightest of breezes without poles and I always use the poles anyway. I'm keen to get my hand on the new rhino version of the 270 which seems to have fixed most of my concerns but I think is still similar to this one in that the poles would still be needed but are now attached to the awning and swing down like on the 30second. plus the bag is bigger.
thanks for the comment and report back with which one you go for . cheers Brett

@@craigtsadventures7414 cheers mate. I get a bit worried not focusing on the one thing but I figure I'll just do what I'm interested in and others may find something I do useful :)
Can't say I have mate, but I just sussed out the website and a quick review. Only about 3kg between it and the foxwing but I thought the material in the review looked a bit light on compared to the 2 in this review. It says 280gsm vs the 320 gsm for ours. What that is in real life, I don't know.
I couldn't' find it on the oztent site but the 30second one has it listed and Steve and I thought it was the same material on both. So that's my logic there.
To be honest if you're not keen on the foxwing this one looks near identical to what I can see. I can see they appear to use some form of metal for their hinge/knuckles where the foxwing is plastic. Not sure if that's a good thing or bad thing.
I know the super centre awnings boast a metal fixture there, but I've heard reports that having these as the weakest point can be a good thing if caught in the wind. So they let go first before the awning poles. Thus a benefit of having plastic ones.
I've had to replace one of mine (video here th-cam.com/video/F451O_PZFIA/w-d-xo.html ) which shows what I mean. It's when I had to fix mine. Easy enough job. Bag looks bigger too, so you can store the poles in it.
A guy posted a comment on that video asking about the foxwing from up in Brissy. He pointed out that Anaconda has the foxwing on at 499 at the moment for club members. ( i hate that member rubbish) That's a version one like I have.
I sussed the Oztent version 2 (at a show) and to be honest I didn't see much different.
The rhino version is another story. They have stepped it up a bit. Still not a 30 second but better none the less.

Thanks Brett and Steve for an honest review. The Oztent Foxwing style of awning is the most copied style, I currently have a cheap imitation of it, that surprisingly has survived a very gusty and strong windy night on the east coast of Tassie. Yes, it was tied down very well with bluescrews. I need the "one man setup" capabilities, and after heaps of research, have decided on the Darche 270 degree awning. Different design to both of these. Another self supporting, drive around type.
    Again, Thanks fellas, most informative.

was just sussing out the darchie after reading your comment.
Not many videos on it but from what I can see, it looks like it fits somewhere in the middle of these 2.
I also believe foxwing had made some updates to theirs with the poles now stored in the awning itself.
I might get in touch with them and see if they have one around that can be used for a review.
on another note, do you get on HF at all ?

Steven Fuller from Drifta fans once had a 30 second awning set up on a teardrop camper and he had problems with water pooling. So he made up 2 more lift up mini poles to help shed the water. Maybe because this awning does not have adjustable legs to lower and raise sections then water pooling is a problem of a fixed height awning.

Thanks for the comparison video. Interesting to see the differences. It looks to me that I would use the 30 sec a lot more because of the convenience. I was wondering how much stress do they have on a roof rack?

    • @DENMONKEY
      @DENMONKEY  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Cheers. Yes, the 30 second is just that bit easier to set up and pull down. Mine is buried directly to the roof cage and doesn't move at all. Steve's 30 second uses the L brackets as per a normal install and it does flex a little when deployed but not much..

In the middle of a storm with a 50kph wind and heavy rain the " 30 second wing" wins my vote and money every day.
Add the 2 extra poles and the tie downs, that thing will handle most conditions
On a added opinion, the flex from the rack would help to save the wing from flipping earlier.

    • @DENMONKEY
      @DENMONKEY  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

they are a bit more sturdy I think, certainly from a frame perspective. That is the biggest risk with such big awnings, they are huge wind sail when it picks up

    • @DENMONKEY
      @DENMONKEY  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You can, but you will want to be pegging them down pretty good. That's a lot of material up there to be catching wind. So long as you're realistic about your expectations of the product, you won't have any issues.
I don't think there is an awning that you could put up and have zero concerns about on a windy day and certainly not without applying some additional effort to tie them down.
I got caught out with the caravan awning being ripped off and those things are a hell of a lot more solid than the ones on cars. Just have to be aware of the limitations.

I had a squizz at their website. Looks pretty similar to the 30 second awning, am I right ?
Does it have poles in each of the arms ?
I really like the 6 arm variant. Looks like a nice piece of kit.
Re the bag, it's still too small but I've altered my technique a little which makes it a bit easier to pack away. Still not what I would call easy though.
The carrying of ropes doesn't bother me but the poles being inside the arms would be a benefit.
I'm still very happy with the foxwing though and consider the weight vs strength to be pretty much right on for what I need it to do.
Rhino and oztent don't make these anymore as a joint effort but they both have new versions out , with the oztent just being released.
I think the new rhino one fixes most of the issues I have with this one but I'm yet to see one in person.
A bit hard to see if the oztent is much different to the original.
I'm going to get in touch with them to see if I can drop in and see one or borrow one and do a follow up review of the update.
appreciate the time to respond .

I sent him an email earlier this evening to se if he’s going to be at next weeks camping show.
      Cheers mate.

@@DENMONKEY Looking at the video the howling looks to be the best 270 out there, as quick as the 30second, and also as strong in the wind as the drifta which itself is rather awkward & slow for a lunch stop. howling has best of both types.

that fox wing looks like the biggest piece of shit going haha. there are so many rip off copy brands. the ostrich wing awning is the only good solid original awning.

Care to expand on that? Why do you consider it a pos? I take it you have the ostrich variant?

I got rid of my Foxwing and bought a Alu Cab because of the bloody small bag. Great idea on someones part.

      Hi Greg,
the new Rhino's have sorted the bag issue it seems. I'm going to get in touch and see if I can borrow one for review.
How close is your Alucab version to Steve's 30second in the review ?

@@DENMONKEY The Alu Cab is a lot more expensive @ over two grand, and I realise that it should be a lot better. The part that gave me the shits was Fox Wing knew that there was a problem when the series one was replaced so quickly . Could not have tested it.

that's a hefty chunk of change right there. I often see releases of products and software being launched when it's just not ready. I guess tech is a different space though. first to market and all that.
I do often wonder about items that have obvious faults and ask why no one spotted that before it was released to the public.
      That's marketing for you.
For me the bag is a bit of an annoyance but not enough to make me swap it out for something else and I can't justify that sort of money on another one.
Overall I'm pretty happy with it.
Do you know the weight of the alu cab off the top of your head ?
