What are your thoughts on using well composted down scrapings from the forest floor ? I have a forest 30 yards from my house where the leaves and twigs fall yearly and compost down. The soil there looks, feels and smells nice and earthy. I've just planted my first ever potato seeds in containers last week with my 10yr old son and one of them we filled with forest floor soil.
Check out "home grown veg" on TH-cam, he has a great video about growing spuds in forest floor scrapings in buckets. He's based in north UK and has some great videos. Hope this helps.

Unfortunately Oakland Gardens won’t deliver to the US. ☹️ I bought some comparable ones off Amazon. My choices were 7 gallon and 10 gallon containers. I opted for 10 of each. Hopefully it won’t be detrimental to my first attempt at potato growing; wish me luck! Love your channel!
Love your potato videos. Keep em coming! For us who live in other parts of the world I think it would help to frequently mention 1. Your average last frost date 2. Npk of blood fish bone which is uncommon in USA 3. Weight of fertilizer you use rather than just visual handfuls These details would help to make reasonable substitutions. I can't argue with your results but for 2 years I also cannot repeat them or even come close. Thanks again and looking forward to your next video.
It's about a cup altogether in each bucket for the fertilizer. In the US, I mix blood meal, potash from the woodstove, and bone meal(this year I've bought azomite, which is from an ancient sea in Utah).
Thank you Tony for your wonderful videos. How can I purchase your book; Compost Masterclass? I have checked your website and your amazon UK site and it's not there for purchase.
I’m lucky to be able to get the Oakland containers here, but before I knew about them I was going to use those flexible trugs with handles, they come in all sizes, just need holes drilled for drainage and standing on bricks for drainage. You might be able to get those for about the same price.
Hi Tony, I’m in the US and confused about using fish meal and bone meal because when I looked for fish meal it was high in phosphorus, like the bone meal, with no potassium in either. Where does the potassium come in? Do you still adhere to a 6*15*20 NPK (I thought I picked that up in another one of your videos)? Could I use blood meal, bone meal and langbeinite for potassium? I’m a first time potato grower and really want to get this right. Thanks for your videos, they’re extremely helpful!

Another great video Tony, I had 10 of these containers with the new bottoms from Oakland delivered yesterday, pity I did not know of your code when I ordered, as it was my first order had no idea they were new bottoms. Only have a very small garden and have made a concrete base area which used to house a 3 seater swing seat into a container grown veg plot, large enough to hold 10 of these containers, charlottes are chitting away, this will be my first attempt at container grown gardening. Find your videos very informative.

Morning Tony wow love those pots, I have my pots on a raised table (rabbits 😭) that is webbed metal so lots of run off ability. It was finally a bit dry today so I got 8 pots done and will do more in a week or so. Thank you for sharing as always all of you stay safe 🥰.
Hi Tony, just a question on growing potatoes in tubs. I grow them in 70 litre tube but have only grow one layer of potatoes with mixed results. My question is would you later pages as well. Many thanks.
Thanks for reply. Will use my own compost in that case next year. This years is already spread on veg beds,, lol just ordered 10 of your 30lt buckets, as already bought 7 others from Amazon which were more expensive,so thanks for that too. Love your videos, so informative, and straight to the point. I only look at yours and Mr No Dig, Charles Downing, and take bits from both of you!
Just ordered 10 using your code, I'll be making a massive amount of leaf mould compost mixed with copious amounts of rabbit manure this Autumn and will hopefully be able to grow a load of 'Dwarf Sunray' jerusalem artichokes in these next season, iv'e grown them in the old pots for 2 years and they do really well as long as the pots are kept mulched and shaded from the sun.
I just used your code to buy 10 of these 30 liter pots. thanks. Question...What do you do with the compost after you harvest the potatoes? Do you have that in a video?
@@simplifygardening sir, perhaps I am having a comprehension problem but I do know the difference between determinate and indeterminate but never have I seen either assigned to a seed potato for sale. Are there common varieties that are determinate and do you know their names? Same for indeterminate do you know which varieties to recommend?
After miserable performance in my no-dig bed (that everything else seems to like) I've followed your lead Tony and got some tubs practically identical to yours - I didn't know about the sponsored store offer, sorry! - and sowed 8x Charlotte a week ago. I've used half Westland New Horizons and half old garden soil (from bags in the garage), loosely mixed with a double helping of fish blood and bone. I'm hoping the clay soil will impart some minerals, it sure as hell hasn't got anything else to offer. Looking at doing another two tubs of maincrops this or next weekend. Fingers crossed!
This will be my first time growing Potatoes in containers and my second time growing potatoes in my lifetime. Last year I got a small crop of Red Norlands. Set them out to dry and when I returned, my puppies were finishing off the last two. Who knew? I’m excited to grow them in containers. We don’t have the ones you have, but I found some cow mineral tubs. They’re a bit larger without handles, but I drilled several 3/4” holes along the sides and 8 - 1/2” holes in the bottom. Should work fine. They’re food grade and black.
I like the modifications to the new containers but it looks easy to modify your old containers by making more and bigger holes. As well, you could place your old barrels on a gravel or stone bed.

Derek go to my website and sign up to the newsletter at the bottom of any article and you will get the new code each month for all oakland products simplifygardening.com
Morning Tony wow love those pots, I have my pots on a raised table (rabbits 😭) that is webbed metal so lots of run off ability. It was finally a bit dry today so I got 8 pots done and will do more in a week or so. Thank you for sharing as always all of you stay safe 🥰.
Thats awesome and great your sowing
Hiya, can you tell me what volume in litres those buckets are please?
I've got a few tubs of really early potatoes in the greenhouses. But still need to get the main bulk planted in buckets this week. Great video👍
Yeah I did my mains the day after
Ordering these for my second earlies this week, need some space so these will defo be an investment :)
Amazing harvest of potatoes 🥔 that you always have. I just watched the video from grape vine allotment where Danny is referring to you.
Ah yeah Danny is back at mine on Monday to help me finish the fruit cage off
Thank You
Your welcome
Hi Tony, just a question on growing potatoes in tubs. I grow them in 70 litre tube but have only grow one layer of potatoes with mixed results. My question is would you later pages as well. Many thanks.
FANTASTIC!!.Can you tell me what is actually in your bagged compost?
its main coir based with green waste compost. It is not the best stuff I would rather use homemade stuff but I've been keeping that for other jobs
@@simplifygardening Thankyou! So, you dont recommend coir based? Im really confused about the soil. In your opinion, whats the best mix?
Thanks for reply. Will use my own compost in that case next year. This years is already spread on veg beds,, lol just ordered 10 of your 30lt buckets, as already bought 7 others from Amazon which were more expensive,so thanks for that too. Love your videos, so informative, and straight to the point. I only look at yours and Mr No Dig, Charles Downing, and take bits from both of you!
Thank you Jane. Charles is a master at no-dig
Thanks Tony, Happy St Patricks Day. I have growmore, do I only need compost and blood, fish and bone.
Yeah u don’t need more but y can add grow. More
Thanks for the video Tony and a reminder to get my 2nd earlies sown this weekend! Will be following your instructions tomorrow 👍, thanks Ian
Awesome Ian keep sowing my friend
Just ordered 10 using your code, I'll be making a massive amount of leaf mould compost mixed with copious amounts of rabbit manure this Autumn and will hopefully be able to grow a load of 'Dwarf Sunray' jerusalem artichokes in these next season, iv'e grown them in the old pots for 2 years and they do really well as long as the pots are kept mulched and shaded from the sun.
ordeed and and confirmed the code worked a treat thanks
I just used your code to buy 10 of these 30 liter pots. thanks. Question...What do you do with the compost after you harvest the potatoes? Do you have that in a video?
*How do we know which potatoes are determinate/indeterminate?* I think this has caused many growing failures in pots...
1st early 2nd early or those with a quick growth time are determinate main crop or longer growth indeterminate
@@OligosFew There are quite a few lists online that you can check, but yeah, stores tends to be pretty bad at mentioning it directly.
@@Usortert I agree. It seems the way to find out is to look them up online. You would think the growers would include that information.
Tom I think you will see a marked improvement in containers
This will be my first time growing Potatoes in containers and my second time growing potatoes in my lifetime. Last year I got a small crop of Red Norlands. Set them out to dry and when I returned, my puppies were finishing off the last two. Who knew? I’m excited to grow them in containers. We don’t have the ones you have, but I found some cow mineral tubs. They’re a bit larger without handles, but I drilled several 3/4” holes along the sides and 8 - 1/2” holes in the bottom. Should work fine. They’re food grade and black.
Great I hope to see you getting a great crop
Those are some nice buckets. 👍 I haven't found anything quite like these buckets here in the U.S. so this year I'm going to try 10 G root pouches.
Thats about the right size Steve let me know how they do
Thanks again for the excellent tips and advice.
Your welcome
Interesting, I'm gonna try your method in my 15litre pot, 2 seed potato in 2 levels
Sounds great!
I like the modifications to the new containers but it looks easy to modify your old containers by making more and bigger holes. As well, you could place your old barrels on a gravel or stone bed.
Yeah you could
Hi really enjoy your videos 👍. Just had 10 x 30L containers delivered from Oakland Gardens they feel very sturdy and the design of the drainage holes is great also they were a great price compared to my local stores and garden centres so many thanks for the recommendation. 🙏🏻
Glad to hear your happy Allan
Do you not normally add mychronzial fungi when planting your potatoes?Or is that just with main crop?
No I dont add it to potatoes
I do think they look better for drainage 🤘👍
huge amount better design
