I have been going on about CZJ in Street Scene for years - I've never seen it mentioned in a bio of her. She was truly amazing. I worked at the ENO and we were all fascinated by her stage presence. She was a lovely person to have in the theatre.
I've seen a couple of vids of this scene that fall short and come off as average overall. This vid does not! It may not seem like it, but this is an incredibly demanding scene. Unlike the jazz, operetta, and operatic scenes proceeding it, this is a full-blow, high-level jazz scene and the characters need to be just as energized as the music throughout the scene in both the subtle and extravagant parts, regardless if they are alone or among ensemble dancers. These two performers check all the boxes. When they or one of them sacrifice expression for concentration on difficult lifts, that is okay. That shows a high level of professionalism and artistic skill set. Keep in mind, audience, that they have rehearsed and performed this scene numerous times before this award show. Every second in this scene is engaging. Bravi tutti! Singers and orchestra! Thank you for posting this terrific excerpt, youtuber. I look forward to watching a recording of this production in the future.
That spot light operated is the worst I’ve ever seen, didn’t he go to rehearsal?
Wow, how was this a hit?! And who is he, he's dreadful!
