- I am 8 years old Karateka. Pinan literally means “the way of peace” or “Safe from Harm”.
‘Anko’ Yasutsune Itosu (1830 -1915) created the Pinan katas, a group of five empty hand forms, now taught in many styles of karate.
Pinan comes under Intermediate Kata and there are up to 5 versions of the kata of Pinan all Karate styles follow the same embusen (starting Point) with the differences being stance and handwork.
History of Katas in Karate:
Kata is a Japanese word describing detailed patterns of movements practiced either solo or in pairs. Karate kata is executed as a specified series of various moves, with stepping and turning, while attempting to maintain perfect form. Katas are not designed to simulate a real fight, but rather to put moves and techniques together. Practicing Kata is also a very effective way of training. Instead of speed, the aim of Kata is to perform each method intentionally and flawlessly. Stances are often deep to aid in strength conditioning. Masters developed intricate Kata to string techniques together and showcase all elements of Karate. This included punches, strikes, kicks, blocks, footwork, and breathing techniques.
