Storm Gentoo: A User-Friendly Calculate/Gentoo Spin?

  • Storm Gentoo is a custom spin by Ben Fitzpatrick, based on Calculate Linux, which in turn is based on Gentoo.
As in my previous review of Storm OS, this is a nicely configured XFCE desktop that comes fully loaded with a plentiful set of applications. What sets this apart though, is its Calculate/Gentoo base.
Calculate Linux has been around for quite a while now and it describes itself as a user-friendly source distro. It uses the cl-update command as a front end to the portage tree, which does a lot of the heavy lifting normally associated with a vanilla Gentoo install. And in that sense it delivers. Installation is quick and easy and updated are managed through a graphical application.
However, there is still a time penalty compared to the likes of Arch and if I'm honest I struggled to see a use case for this distro, other than for those who like to tinker.
    If that's you, go ahead.

Gentoo Linux is the best Linux by a mile. Though some horsepower in your computer is needed to make compile times not last too long. And certainly it's not for beginners. You are faced with really steep learning curve, but after you survive that period, it becomes much easier than you could have ever imagined during that learning period. And after that you are never going back to anything else. Though most people switch back to some other distro after their first install of Gentoo, like myself, but a lot of those eventually come back to Gentoo as it's hard feel satisfied with anything else after you experience Gentoo long enough.

I'm not 100% sure what you mean, but I have full Gentoo KDE Plasma on my laptop and it's really polished.
But those who prefer polished experience over performance and control should probably avoid Gentoo.
OTB's "not having patience" is something that clears away if one manages to withstand the learning period once. Sure you are not going to get packages installed as fast from sources, but you can just leave updates running on the back and continue with your work. Or just leave the update running when you stop using your computer, perhaps having it go into suspend or turn off after the updates are ready.
I experienced that same "not having patience" and only in my 3rd time trying Gentoo I withstand that period. And it really was a lot shorter than I thought. Updates really isn't the problem, unless you are running laptop, though powerful laptops handle updates quite fast.
TLDR: If you try Gentoo, don't give up. And if you happen to give up, don't feel afraid to try it again.

@Agnish Roy LFS and BLFS are way longer to install and you need to read a lot. Even a full Crux Linux with Xfce and the main apps is more difficult to install than Gentoo. Now for people who are afraid to handle a pure Gentoo from the word go they can install Calculate and once they feel comfortable with it they just need to edit some files and the profile and they will migrate to a pure Gentoo from Calculate.
      Cheers

Gentoo is THE distro that you should NOT consider using unless you have a great deal of experience and insight of the Linux distro landscape. That is to say, not for anyone who isn't prepared to tinker, but also requires an understanding of principles not required in day-to-day use of other - ANY, in fact - distros. That include "Archlinux", which is actually more similar to any other distro than a Gentoo based one. Gentoo is unique in just about every respect. Having said that, although I would not recommend to a new Linux user, if you have got your feet wet with Linux over a couple of years, and tried several Linux spins/distros, then a "Calculate" install would be feasible. Once you have it installed, and then added and removed those applications you want to have on your end running system, then the finished product is hard to equal. As you say, the 'cl-update' ran daily from within terminal will just keep your build fizzing along nicely. I seem to remember someone somewhere saying they had a Gentoo build on a laptop that was EIGHT YEARS good, and going fine - hard to match by any standard!!
I am not an expert by far, but have had great success and pleasure running Calculate. I have several videos on my channel outlining the install and use of Calculate; all still are good to refer to, as the world of Gentoo is not fast-moving as such!
    So, in a nutshell:-
1 - get your preferred Calculate iso environment.
2 - install. I have a couple of prety clear 'Kiss' type videos.
3 - use 'emerge foo' to add your preferred applications. [Where 'foo' is the application!]
4 - use 'emerge --unmerge foo', and follow with, 'emerge --depclean' to remove any default applications you don't want.
    5 - ENJOY!!! Then 'cl-update' once a day.
PS The beauty of calculate is that first port of call is to look for a binary within the calculate repos. THEN, if not avilable, it will pop over to the gentoo source repos and pull from there. Of course, if it does go there, then you are in for a long haul in the sens of installation time! Only really good hardware and good network connections need apply!!
Best wishes, stay safe. Oh, for anything else on Gentoo, I refer you to the mighty "SERGE" and the famous "ADRIAN LINUXTRICKS"...

Issue with Gentoo is the faster PC you have the better experience installing from sources. There doesn't exist processor which can rip through something like Firefox/Chromium in less than hours but even then for installation you can today use binary package (and even x86_64_v3 !!!) and installing whole system on modern computer takes rather quickly. Then when you already have system up and running you can rebuild everything while you watch YT videos or whatever. Slightly bigger issue is that Gentoo/Portage requires users to get to know the system to really take the advantage of it and it requires some time. For that reason I don't see any reason to try to make installation any easier than it already is. You save few hours on intallation but then miss some important knowledge which will be useful when repairing system. In fact most Linux users use easy to install distributions and their solution to everything is reinstalling system - reinstalling the system is almost never a proper solution. Not saying Calculate is wrong to make things easier - just saying Gentoo already isn't that hard to install and it already doesn't really need to take that much time.

  • @Bens963
    @Bens963 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Personally I find Gentoo the easiest distro to run. If something breaks you know where to look, because you put it all together. If Ubuntu broke I wouldn't have the faintest idea. Managing dependencies via flags keeps things fairly minimal - on Debian there were a million packages for same thing with different options - screw that. Applications can compile in one window while you do something else, choice of init system hell you can change the whole setup to musl if you want.
