I love listening to what your plans are and of all the changes you've been making to your cabin...I have no idea how to plan or carry out any type of build, but I'm in awe with you...a nice COLD pop at the end is great!
Good morning Martin. I built my log cabin in my 20s. I am now 68 and just thinking of building a log cabin makes me tired. Glad to see you taking up the challenge one log at a time. Be safe and enjoy the great outdoors.
I grew up in NE Iowa, with a large Norwegian population, and have taken many classes offered by the Norwegian museum. One of those classes was on building a log building. I was told an old saying in Norway, "If on the Yuletide the trees you're felling, ten times will be the life of your dwelling"! Good luck, and I do love your videos!
That was one nice tree and a good job getting it down. Those mosquitos thou. Wow! Looks like your making good progress getting trees down. Take care, Al
Oh my lard ! I hade to turn the volume down , those blood suckers were give me nasty flashbacks of sleepless camping nights 🤣. Martin you are one tuff nut .
I wish I had your energy and stamina. I could do a day like that, but the recovery period would be 2 weeks. If you quarter sawed your boards you would have little trouble with cupping. With the grain all on one side of the tree you would have good boards at the expense of extra work and narrower boards. At least you won’t have to forge your own nails unless you plan to use Japanese nailless joinery 🙂 Another fine video from the North Woods.
I am hoping that my only using the middle two slabs of the tree for the floor that it will stay flatter. I have some on a workbenh from 15 years ago and they are still flat.
Your spade peels bark just like the original bark removal too, a spud, sort of a large chisel with a curved blade on a long wooden handle. Very clever of you.
You couldn't pay me to stay up there in May thru September with all of the mosquitoes and flies. However, you couldn't pay me to leave the cabin in October thru April. Thank you as always Marty!
The ease of stripping bark in the spring definitely out weighs any advantages of cutting in the winter, that's for sure. Glad you mentioned Jakes channel, great content on there, he just hit 100k subscribers in 10 months with his new channel!
awesome work cutting that tree down those mosquitos horrible part of the warmer weather , you should get a bug jackett , love your little cabin very nice .
YOU MADE ME NEVERIOUS WHEN, YOU WERE TRYING TO FINISH OFF CUTTING THAT TREE!!!!!! BUT LIKE YOU SAID, YOU GET THE JOB DONE!!! MARTIN YOU ARE *DILIGENT* IN YOU, GOALS & WORK, FOR SURE!!!!!!!!!!! Do take care. Fl.
Martin, those steel wedges seemed to work just fine. Like the model T it works just fine, now a days the plastic weights less. difference between modern day loggers and real ones.
Ironically enough.....I stumbled across one of the magnesium wedges just a few days ago.......I have probably had it for 40 years or so.....not a dent on it......must have been saving it for a special reason.....but I forgot what it was.....LOL !!!
Great job on felling that tree 🌲 Martin. Went down right where u wanted it. Some great lumber from that tree. Great video as usual. Be safe and God Bless.
Awesome video! i love listening to your plans. love your screen tent. your Home looks Awesome! nothing like a cool/cold drink on a hot summer day. :) :)
The bugs, the bugs! That was an unpleasant experience. Even a video recording of the buzz of mosquitoes goes directly to the nervous system and elicits a flee response. Mosquitoes, black flies and midges, little wonder so much of the north is sparsely populated. Well there are also the harsh winters. Great video otherwise, thanks Martin!
Wow mosquitos are thick! I bought a screen tent for up at the cabin. They were so bad had to buy a head net. The new cabin logs are coming along nicely.
You be careful out there Martin! Your a long way from aid if you need it. I don’t see how you do it!! Your still physically fit enough to enjoy that heavy work. Good for you!!👍🏻
That was hard work. Have a great weekend Martin. We are trying see if we can hatch quail eggs. Our neighbor brought them over, Quail mama was killed by a cat or Skunk I have a Broody Mama bantam hen so we put them under her and we will see if they will hatch. Neighbor said he had them in a box for a day with a 100 watt light bulb and a water jar for moisture. I don't know if they will hatch but we are trying. Around the 17 or 18th of july would be the hatching time? I'm filming it for a video short out later in the month. Our Mamma hen is sitting on the eggs flat as a Pizza and growls at us, just funny to see it. Cheers Martin! Say hello to Vonnie for us.
Two eggs did hatch and our mama serama hen raised them and now the quail chicks got big enough they flew the coop. They vist the coop time to time. It was fun, I did film some video but haven't edited it for youtube yet. We got new Imac as old one died. Trying to catch up on my art videos..Hee,Hee, Take care Martin say hi to Vonnie. Cheers!
Good see your video even with the mosquitoes. Know those bugs can drive you crazy. We have horrible humidity and heat here in deep southeast Mississippi. I am looking forward to fall but it is still a longs off. Did finally get much needed rain. Hope next week we get more rain as the heat is drying everything out. I get out before day break and inside during the highest heat and back out right before dark. Oh well, I can not control the weather so I just do the best I can. God bless you and Vonnie in all y’all do.

Those mosquitoes drove me crazy and I’m not even there. I’m in Ohio enjoying air conditioning! My Saturday morning routine consists of sitting in my recliner enjoying my morning coffee watching the The North Woodsman. I found myself swatting every time I heard them buzzing! I had to turn off my surround sound!
As much as I love the great outdoors those mosquitoes would eat me alive. I see how you get away with being out there with those bugs? It's a good thing you found some use for that tamarack. 👍 Martin
Thanks Martin I generally liked it, except for all clouds of buzzing skeeters, I don't know how you can handle them, I get itchy watching/listening them!
I set my alarm today for 4:00 so I can get up and do some photography but I got rain lots of it my butt ain't going nowhere and your video happened to show up and I'm like okay something good to watch
The bugs would drive me nuts. Being from the south the heat and humidity I can put up with but the bugs no. That tamarack will make good wood for the cabin. Yes you need the plastic felling wedges. I surely would have dinged my saw chain on those iron wedges and made a mess.
Far as I can tell Martin....you ain't no Cheechako.......and is that a Johnny 535 or 2051?........and what you are cutting has much different bark than the Western Larch we have.....and more limbs....I have similar goals, but a different time line....and am finishing up a portable band mill.....two years ago, myself and another Senior did the chainsaw mill thing..2"x 18"x 12' Doug Fir..times 400 board feet......and a portable Clock/Thermometer read 107f in direct sun......ain't doin that again.....Good Luck with the Summer Sir.......and a Shot of Crown Peach to you !! Mr. Martin, I applauded you when the tree fell, nice easy ,no crash, no pulling out the middle of the tree, Excellent Work.

The difference is that when you nick your metal wedge with the saw you destroy your chain, that's why they use plastic
