I saw Fred Trueman open the bowling 20 years after this particular test match playing for Courage Old England XI against an Old Kent XI. He was medium fast then, but retained his rhythmic run up and fine release of the ball from a high bowling arm. He got nip off the wicket too. I say this for anyone who thinks Trueman doesn't look especially fast here by modern standards. He was a very great bowler indeed. Almost as good as he thought he was !
Thanks for the comments. Brian Statham with Fred were a great combination. Often said that statham wore batsmen down and Fred picked up the wickets. Great to see the honesty of both sides, walking without being given out. Bill Lawry so often a thorn in Englands side. Many great players on show. Lord Ted, Ken Barrington etc etc. thanks again. I know I'm old now, so probably bit of a reactionary. But this is cricket as I remember it and loved it. No advertisements on the ground, on the bats, on the stumps . . . No cavorting all over the place whenever a wicket is taken. When a batsman reaches his 50 or 100, he simply raises his bat for a moment, instead of waving it around everywhere. And the cricket is proper test or county cricket. Innings built steadily. Wickets not thrown away with impatient slogging. End of rant . . . (I was going to say no ugly helmets. But I must confess that if I was out there facing up to Fred Trueman or someone, I would want a suit of armour.)
Evening everyone, welcome to the 1961 highlights. I thoroughly enjoyed myself out there on the last day, good effort that from me... Dexter, Close and Subba Row, right on the stroke of tea. Fine spell of leg-spin bowling. 6 for 70, marvellous. I will be back on the BBC for the next 40 years and look forward to your company then.
Wonderful famous stuff. Two things I noticed. One is that some of the ground fielding in 1961 was very shabby and that despite Brendon Julian's closing comment the 5th Test was not a washout.

I was there on the last two days, so was my brother. I was 17, Geoff was 11.
It appears that England's uncanny ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory goes back further than I thought.
