  • The Meadowcrest Mansion. An 8000 sqft Neo-Georgian home that was built in 1929 by Joseph McKee and John Edward as part of a 200+ acre farm called Hamburg Place that was owned by their father John E Madden. In 1932 Joseph passed away and left the mansion to his wife and children. In the 1960s I-75 was built which split the property in half. After Joseph’s wife passed away the mansion stayed in the family but sat abandoned for years. In 2017 the mansion was used in a horror filmed called “house of the witch” where a group of kids investigate a haunted mansion that had been abandoned for years. Today the mansion is being demolished for new development. So let’s take a look at what’s left before this beautiful home is gone forever.

It hurt my heart driving past this home and not seeing it there anymore. It was beautiful. There was hardly nothing around it, so it stood so grand out there by itself!

What a beautiful old mansion. So sad to see all of the old beauty's being tore down just for modern development. I would think the 3rd floor would have been maid quarters. The bathrooms were very basic. Thanks for the tour! Bev

It must have been a stunningly beautiful mansion in the early days. It looks more modern to me than a house that was built back in 1929. Do you know how long it's been abandoned? Thanks for posting this.

You are a great advocate for saving these homes. I wish more could be done to save each one. Each one is as precious as the day it was built and for whom it was built for. Today's houses cannot compare or compete, or the craftsmanship be affordable or even available in some instances. It's such a shame to lose these old, and once very grande beauties :(

I find abandon homes like this so sad. Somebody worked their whole life to build and afford that. It could be a mansion like this, or a modest home on farm or in a city. When they pass, the people that inherit it let it fall into decay, or sell it and move on. They did nothing to earn what they inherited so it has no value to them.

GORGEOUS!! Ethan Minnie would love to have a shot at this staircase!! Beautiful history.
What is truly important is that the house is/was built to last. Homes nowadays and if left abandoned would mold up and get destroyed quickly.

Only in America do we destroy our magnificent historical homes and buildings. A staircase like that can't be replicated today. Why couldn't this have been the center piece of the new development??? That way it could have brought joy to people for another 100 years. Sickening waste.

always sad to lose another historic home to make way for progress. How many things in this world were built on top of ancient structures to make this happen. In the UK and so many other places digging down will most likely bring up the past. I find that rather comical because as soon as they realize what they have they halt progress on the new to preserve the old. All digging stops and so does the "progress" that was supposed to be made. A rich irony I think !!! the old closets were made of cedar to keep the moths from eating the clothing stored within them. so much more wool was used in the production of clothing back then. now we have so many different kinds of cloth. So many details still remain to archive on this day. So happy you were able to get there before it was all gone. The clothes dryer in the basement was fascinating, a really advanced piece of progress for its time. So great to see they are preserving what they can before it is gone. the top floor was undoubtedly for the servants to live. The bathrooms were more utilitarian and much less fancy than the ones in the rooms below. Household staff didn't get fancy just practical accommodations !!! Thank you so much for the history lesson, it was a fascinating one !!!

The dryer worked by hanging bedding or clothing on the rods, then placing hot coals in the trays under the drawers , then sliding shut it was mostly for bedding though. I assume they had servants taking care of such a large household because these types of dryers are seen in homes like this occasionally. I hope this will be preserved, because it’s such an interesting part of house managing history.

From the biggins like these, to the tiny shaker(cracker box) houses from the 18 and 1900s, these are our great pyramids, our coloseums, and stone henges. They shsould be restored and revered. Celebrated and enjoyed. This is a human made tragedy :( To demolish smthg like this, should be a crime :(

It would have gone beautifully with my house that burned down in 2014 :((( The kitchen was "cow" themed (as a tribute to my hometown of Calgary, AB Canada aka Cowtown - for the yearly Stampede there every July) the kitchen was pink/white/black with a theme worded "LIFE: the black, the white and the Udder" lol mounted in large words atop the large kitchen space, yep, these ppl decorated in my kinda theme indeed, and although I am most grateful to have a home, built in 2014 after the fire, it has zero character compared to my other home. Character homes should be preservered at all costs, whenever possible.

My parents lived right down the road from the Madden's. It is always so sad to see these old grand homes going to waste. The Interstate wasn't close enough that this home couldn't have been saved but the land had been sold for shopping centers. Actually a very saavy business move on Anita Madden's part, she sold the land that is now Hamburg Shopping Centre' (huge) but had in the agreement that the buildings in the Centre' were leased to her for X number of years so her estate will continue to earn money off of all the businesses there. Also the Maddens are quite famous for their Kentucky Derby Eve parties, many well known politicians and celebrities came to the parties which were very very posh. Quite a history in that old house. I just hate when places like this are torn down for something that could go somewhere else. I’m sure there is someone out there that would love to have had this place and fixed it up. The stair case is BEAUTIFUL. We are destroying our history for something I feel we could use somewhere else. This is why our children don’t care anymore we are erasing history. That place just has me in 😲😊

Thank you so much for this tour. What a beautiful home and such a shame it’s being torn down. This home just goes to show how rich this family was back in the day. That stair case was absolutely beautiful and that walk-in closet upstairs I noticed was lined in cedar planking that you failed to mention. Thanks again for this video tour.

I was going to say that too, those beautiful cedar lined closets were a fortune just themselves. Sad to see something so nice destroyed.

THANK YOU FOR SHOWING US THIS MANSION. AND ALL OF YOUR HARD WORK. I AM GLAD YOU ARE DOING ALRIGHT AFTER YOUR FOOT WENT THROUGH THAY ICE. THERE IS NOTHING WORSE THAN A SOAKED WET FOOT. I HAVE HAD THAT EXPERIENCE MORE THAN ONCE MYSELF. BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL AND STAY SAFE. THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT YOU DO.

I see you have greedy town government and developers out there as well.
It’s a shame they wouldn’t save such a marvelous structure!

      @Melanie Sorry to hear.
A few towns over from me, new owners of a perfectly restored Victorian era house tore it down to build something new.
      Some people suck!

Sad when people die, and the family is broken. Then everything is gone forever, thank you for sharing.

This is such a beautiful home ,
I can’t believe that anyone would tear it down,
so many amazing old homes are being destroyed.
House of the witch was a good movie ~ I loved this mansion.

It makes me sick to see such a beautiful home being torn down only to be replaced by a hundred or so smaller homes

I SURE WISH PEOPLE WITH MONEY to maintain mansions LIKE THIS had a GREATER APPRECIATION for them and PREFERRED to SAVE and upgrade them without removing its character rather building this new STUFF And in an ideal world it would be illegal to demolish these for multi use purposes.. Just me WISHFUL THINKING !
