    That was a fun review. I have had one of these for 4 years in Canada. I really like it. You just have to keep within the range limit and its great. One small precision, in the video Jonathan mentions a liquid cooled battery. Its actually air cooled and the cooling is only when it is quick charged. The pump sound you hear is the liquid cooling system for the motor and inverter. Anyways great review. I enjoy your channel cheers....

    Wow that was quick coming out with a review of an Ion. Nice to see Jonathon again too. Meet him at a rapid when he did his John O Groats to Lands end and back trip. As for the ion it was our first EV and its now 5 years old. Having lost just 4 per cent capacity we actually kept it for all our short journeys under 60 miles. As a second EV its perfect for us. Thankyou for the video guys. If you are looking for another EV to test purely for the sake of how times have changed how about ......... the G Wiz!!!

    It's nice to see John in person. I was looking at buying the Mercedes B Class Electric from him last year before I bought my Leaf new. Nissan had an unbelievable offer on at the time. Sorry again John. Another excellent video. Thankyou.

      Kevin Hayes I think he'll be happy that you bought an EV to be honest. I did drive a B-class E and it was excellent. Just the lack of rapid charging made it a no go. Glad you like the videos 😊👍🏻

    Low mileage one of these on eBay now for £4800. Cracking buy indeed. Plus there’s no battery lease. And rapid charging at 17 minutes. Why wouldn’t you buy one. Great for 80 miles in summer. 😎👍

    It takes a while to catch up with all these EV gems. Late to the party and currently dipping our toes in the water with an Ionic Hybrid. Would love a Tesla Model 3 but might be going for another Ioniq or maybe the Kona EV with 60Kwh later this year.

    First, thanks and I love that you James & Kate are having to repress smiling throughout, Jonathan's effect. Second, tech help if microphones & audio are an issue: the free PC software (not dodgy, it's used by schools for our kids etc) public-domain is 'audacity' and you just open audacity up, then instead of telling it the audio file you wanna edit or enhance, just put in the VIDEO you want to strip the audio track from. If you feed this particular video in, you will find easily the audio magically appears in audacity, and if without taking ANY other actions, you just go for 'effect' and select 'amplify' the entire audio will be amplified by whatever amount you choose - for this, I'd try 4dB to 7dB. It takes a few seconds to process. (Now if you find the beginning part for example is too high, you can get into highlighting and reducing particular pieces of audio). Almost there! Again, do nothing else, except get the 'effect' column pulled down, and hit 'compression'. Again a few seconds to process. Now, 'file' and 'export audio'. Try WAV 16 bit, or MP3 or whatever. LASTLY you go into microsoft Movie Maker (free software again) and insert this soundtrack by the usual method of inserting a MUSIC item of audio. Because the video and the audio are the precise same length, there's no lipsync issues to worry about. FINALLY set the volume of the VIDEO soundtrack to zero, and UP the gain (volume) of the newly-implanted audio track to 3/4 or even maximum. Export or save or whatever this finished video with its new-and-improved audio. In audacity you can boost the bass and all that so you can sound much more Walter Kronkyte - not that you don't already sound that way James..........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................Now, you are going to say, you edited this video then found a problem. Simply take the final edited video with its sound problem, and treat in the same way I said for audacity stripping the audio track as given at the top of this tech tip. Then, a little incestuous this I am afraid, take the newly-stripped audio, go back into a video editor of the video, and do as before. Again, always make sure you reduce to zero the volume of the VIDEO soundtrack, but raise to 3/4 or full the volume of the 'music' track you have added (ie the re-vamped audacity audio track). The audio will be back to your usual high quality. For those who are audiophiles AND technophiles, this will be way below your expertise and I apologise - for the rest of us, it's free high-quality audio we never knew existed, direct from the camera microphone................................................................................................................................................................................................OK, now I will resume watching your Peugot Ion review - PS I didn't even know it existed, it's not like the Mitsubishi website explained their IMIEV was not available but you can go get the peugot equivalent, they just said why don't you try our Outlander PHEV instead? Without a hint of irony. I mean, just sit two pictures of the cars together...the only commonality is they both have electric drive...but heck, that's like me saying I had a model aeroplane (drone now they call them) and it was just like a Spitfire because it had a piston engine...!

    I have the 2010 Mitsubishi i-MiEV, the mother of the Peugeot and Citroen siblings. I've driven 24k km last year for about 1400 euro including 2 new front tires, taxes and insurance.
    As for practicality, it has enough room for 2 adults, 1 kid with seat and you can fold the seat down half and get the other things in quite easily. It's not quite as small, because the increased height helps, and seating 4 adults is easier in this then the Peugeot 206 SW that came before it.
    Some notes that are not quite right, the battery is not liquid cooled, you are either hearing the brake vacuum pump in the front, or the coolant pump for the motor and controller in the rear. When DC quickcharging (36kW ~100A) it will activate the AC unit and blast the battery with cool air via a duct under the drivers seat RHD, or passenger seat LHD.
    The throttle is a bit weird in this car, in D, most of the pedal throw has little effect until you hit the last 10% and it basically becomes a kick-down. If you drive in B, you have a lineair map which makes some driving easier, but you also get far more regen. In C you have the least regen and the paddle is basically numb, but makes it easier for highway driving.
    Also, it has a slow go of the line because they ramp the power off the line over 2 seconds. This could be because of the ESP not keeping up or something along those lines, not sure, but it's annoying for quick crossings. If you have a rolling start at 10mph and punch the throttle you get the immediate 50kW of power.
    I like the simplicity of the car though, it's just uncomplicates things. The MOT last year was just 40 euro and nothing else. If you factor in the 150 for the tires it's still the cheapest car I've ever driven.

      Joe Tarrant Yes, and I love my Mitsubishi i-MiEV too (also the same car). Can confirm that it's great fun to drive. Those range figures are about right if you drive carefully, even for my ancient 7-year old model with over 35K miles on the clock. Long distance drives are definitely doable, if you're not in a rush and enjoy watching the scenery glide by at 52mph on the motorway. Fairly rapidly reaches 70 mph on the motorway if you really need it though (need to have plenty of range to spare unless you're going downhill anyway, preferably with a tail wind!)

      Nettlesoup... Please can you advise roughly what each bar of power equals in range on the dash?.. are they about 4 miles each... they seem to last longer below half way too?

    • @nettlesoup
      @nettlesoup 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use the "caniOn" app on Android to compare my state of charge with the battery bars. It seems that no bars means less than 10% SOC and all 16 bars means 90% or greater. So each bar represents 5% additional charge.
      Also, I confirmed that 50% equals the exact mid-way point, so for my car at least there is no variation in weighting. It might be that the battery gets warmer after a longer journey so becomes more efficient at delivering the energy; I can't say I've noticed this myself.

    Another good video. I'd checked out Jonathon's website after seeing it on one of Robert Llwellyn's "Fully Charged" episodes. There's definitely a bit of a community building up round EVs and I'm getting EV envy - problem is I only changed my car a year ago and whilst I can afford to change not sure I can justify it unless I count the extra £3000 I'd need as an investment. If I discounted depreciation I'd save £40 per month - not a bad return on £3000 especially as it's getting less than 1% in an ISA!

      Michael OWEN It a tricky decision sometimes, especially when it comes to financials. However, we wouldn't change it now.

      On the viability of used EVs I checked out a US site www.greencarreports.com and they have some good articles on buying used EVs. One thing they did speculate on was when some of the early cars are down to 60% of capacity they will be dirt cheap to buy so putting a new battery (5,500 US Dollars) in one of these could give you a new car range for about 10,000 Dollars or £7,000 (ish). Saying that the capacity issue seems to be mainly a problem on US cars operating in hot states like Arizona.

    i have one of these it's a great car, was meant to be second car but we use it more than the ice car and now selling ice car to get a second ev.
    only down side that you should of mentioned in the review is it only has 2 seats in back (4 seater) but dose have iso fix. 😀

      Hi Tim, I'm sure i popped it in a title saying lots of legs room for 4 passengers???
      They are a great car, and as you've said, do not have to be your second choice. It's amazing how this happens. We purchased a Leaf as a second car, it soon became our first car, then the ICE car went.
      Thanks for watching.

    I wonder if soon we'll see EV tuning/upgrading businesses come about that in the case of this vehicle and other older generations EV's will offer aftermarket replacement higher density batteries/upgraded motors and efficiency enhancements such as on the heating systems and even fit rapid charge abilities on vehicles that in their original configurations not had them? New, appealing life could be put into such vehicles in this respect..

    • @michaelowen7694
      @michaelowen7694 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Something I've mulled over as well. Certainly as batteries continue to get cheaper as outlined in the video there doesn't seem to be any obvious reason why battery upgrades in older vehicles wouldn't become financially viable.

    • @adrianking8752
      @adrianking8752 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good on them! At the moment they have what I consider a game changer with the 41kwh Zoe and unlike Chevrolet with their Bolt, itself a something of a game changer in the range extending realm they haven't decided to ignore the right hand drive market! Still awaiting a real world video review of the Zoe 41kwh to appear on TH-cam though..

    • @robsmith1a
      @robsmith1a 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've ordered a Zoe Dynamique I ZE 40 arriving in March. I'm not getting the quick charge version (22 kw max charge rate but if I can get close to 180 mile range I'll be a real stranger to public chargers anyway). I believe Robert Llewellyn has an upcoming review on the fully charged show channel on here. Renault say realistic 186 summer and 124 winter but looking at the range calculator on the Renault website the range only drops off a lot once below zero degrees and in the South of England that isn't very common (at least during the day). It is worth noting that some large discounts are available for the Zoe and Leaf whereas Hyundai wouldn't give me a penny off an Ioniq.

    • @adrianking8752
      @adrianking8752 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good to hear Robert LLewellyn has a review pending for the Zoe 41kwh! Bit tight of Hyundai to be so unaccommodating, for me the Ioniq is a demonstration of efficiency in an EV rather than a game changer. Nissan should be inclined to lean a little with the current Leaf as really its bordering on being dated, again pleased to hear Renault are also offering incentives with discounts!

  • @m1aws

    Yay, due to titanates (titanium oxides) the battery on this line of cars is pretty expensive. They can be charged to abusive rates with no harm. I've heard they are longest lasting too.

    This is what first got me into the Idea of getting one, I saw a white Ion for 5k with 20k miles or so,Thanks for the test drive interesting stuff.
    If you factor in the real depreciation though from new on ownership how much do you really save, as these are twice the price of a fossil fuel equivalent. So I would be interested to compare the end figures on your leaf etc as to what the real cost was. I think my next car may well be a leaf for the wife or one of these to play with ;>) if an Ion is 28k new and worth about 5k three years later how much do you really save as a total? Has anyone done some real figures on this. I worked out I can save about 2k a year on 10,000miles on fuel going to a Leaf, but when you factor in the depreciation the savings drop considerably. But then I tend to own from ex demo and get rid at 70-80,000 so as to retain 55% of the value with my last car. That way I lost only £4200 in five years against the 22k in three /four years this car has.. I think a year old leaf for 15k makes more sense and then get rid of in before the battery goes. But I guess if you lease one you hand them back and get no resale? Total cost of ownership on the leaf you had may be an interesting video to see. From a man who has to count his pennies ;:>)

      407bug Hi, really pleased. It's the way. Ok, you can plug a type 2 in to it so long as it has the J1772 on the end and type 2 mennekes the other. Also it will only charge at 3.3kws as that's the charger size on the car, but it's quick enough if you're shopping to add a bit of charge. You'll be ok with a 3 pin tbh, it'll charge to 100% over night like this. I think you'll get around 70/75 in the summer, maybe 60/65 in the winter. Great little car, and peanuts to run 😊👍🏻

      The manufacturers list price is £16279 in the UK now - the on the road price is £16995. There is a £4500 grant taking the down to £12495. It makes this and the Citreon CZero good buys if that is the sort of car you want given you will have the manufacturers warranty and 8 years on the battery. As Mitsubishi don't make these anymore I assume Peugeot and Citreon are trying to get rid of the last of these cars before launching something new. The £5-6k the 4-6 year old cars fetch make buying a new one a more interesting prospect.

I've tryed to find a second hand one, but the prices here are much higher than in the uk, being the cheapest one a Peugeot Ion at 7.5K Euro ( about 7K GBP , right?). Unfortunately, here you have to deal with a close-to-non-existent infrastructure

      The dealer infrastructure is the same in many places. In Scotland there are only 2 Peugeot Ion dealers, one in Edinburgh and the other Glasgow. Same for many of the other electric car manufacturers. Just finishing a piece for my website on EV's and I can't say from what I have found I am encouraged to go get one much as I think they will eventually be what we all drive. The good thing with these cars is if you change the gearshift plate you can get access to the B and C drive modes the i-Miev has. Simple easy swap out.

      you can get an i miev used down here in california for about 5-8 thousand dollars. and yes it is true that depreciation has taken a massive hit on any EV besides a tesla. I leased a fiat 500e, and I'm thankful i leased it because I've seen ones with under 5k miles, and less than a year old selling for 6k dollars. When new its around 32k. I now have a kia soul EV because i wanted the DC fast charger, and I will never go back to ICE.They also took 14k off the sticker price.!! Range isn't an issue as long as you have fast chargers, and you plan your trip. Unfortunately, the majority of people don't want to be inconvenienced at all.

    A nice car but the range is off putting ,120-130 km or 75 -81 miles isn't it like buying a similar sized car with a fuel tank less then 1.5 gallons or 7 litres ? My similar sized town , petrol car will do around 450 miles on a motorway and thats with the heater on !
    I'm all in favour for an EV but range is paramount .

    This car is made to bring profit to Mitsubishi! The car after 8-10 years develop charger problem. Charger to change 4300 Euros because you cannot buy separately the parts to reaper it! Everything is vin coded so you cannot buy used parts and replaced. Battery last about 15 years and cost until yet 10.000 Euros! Even if a small problem occurs with the battery you must change all the battery. So consider to give after 15 years 15.000 Euros for maintains. That’s no Green driving! This car cost more than to drive a normal gasoline car! Thanks to Mitsubishi!!!

    So then why is a Tesla not as efficient with its much larger batteries? Too much weight? They should consider using lighter materials in the future because lets say a P100d were to be this efficient, it'd only need a 51kw/h battery to do the same distance. I am glad to see that in the future, buying a cheaper electric car won't necessarily mean getting a shorter range.
    I just wish there could be a break through where it is possible to buy an EV for about 10,000 pounds, get over 600 miles on a charge and recharge within 5 minutes. One can get a normal ICE car like a Dacia Sandero that does that for that amount of money. So there is still a way to go. Also, an electric car wouldn't work for us at the moment because we have one family car that costed about 25,000 pounds that is also able to tow a caravan to holiday destinations all while barely using that much more fuel than normal. In an electric car, from other channels I have seen, they lose an immense amount of charge from towing almost halving the range which would make it impossible to safely go on holiday. There's still a few hurdles for electric cars to overcome before it can become truly mass market. I wonder if super capacitors will make this possible....

      SDav21 EV's do have there limitations, especially the towing point you mentioned. The problem is, petrol/diesel contains huge amounts of energy that an internal combustion engine very inefficiently turns into kinetic energy. However inefficient it is doesn't matter as it has so many kWh's at its disposal. An EV however uses energy very efficiently but the battery density isn't there yet to provide the range you ask for. However, it's slowly getting better. I think the main attraction for EV drivers is the way an EV drives, its many times better than any internal combustion car imo, the cost of travel, which is also very low when compared to an ICE car and the environmental impact. Every year we get a little closer though, charging times come down and the cars reduce in price so hopefully you won't have to wait too long 😊😂

      I think we are many years away still. What about heavy duty trucks carrying cargo long distances, buses and massive diesel powered ships? By the way it drives what do you mean? There are normal ICE cars, even diesel ones, that are so smooth and so quiet. Then there is the issue of where the electricity to charge comes from. We need renewable energy very soon to make electric properly environmentally friendly.

      SDav21 in the U.K. We only use 24% coal at peak and at night when most cars are charging it's reduced to under 5%. Even charged fully from coal EV's are 3 times more efficient than ICE cars and also much more reliable. In regards to heavy vehicles it will probably be hydrogen that sets the bar, but buses, we have loads of electric ones here already.

      I have an iMiEV and I'd have bought a i3 instead IF it was only £5k .... but my back seat passengers prefer the iMiEV which has plenty of headroom to the BMW which very much does not.
