Ian Clarke is a British flutist, composer and teacher. He has established himself as one of the UK's most innovative flutists with a particular interest in contemporary works and techniques.
"The Great Train Race" was written as a showpiece for the flute. It uses various contemporary techniques, such as multiphonics, note bending and singing while playing. As professor Ian Clarke's flute student, I had the honour of working on it with the composer himself, which was an invaluable experience.

In my mind, this piece is about two prideful steam trains which, at first, brag to each other about how fast they are. After their discussion turns into a heated argument, they finally challenge each other to a race. During their fierce rivalry, they keep speeding up more and more and in the piece's finale, they both fall off the tracks right before the finish line!
