How To Know the Direction a Tree Leans

- This is how a lot of professional loggers use to determine which way a tree is leaning, or which way it naturally wants to fall. Much of the time you can tell which way a tree is leaning just by looking at it. But it’s not always that easy. Especially when slopes, and multiple trees leaning in different directions are involved. Or when a tree is so close to standing straight up, it’s just hard to tell.

Good video Wilson, but...the surest way to tell which way a tree leans or will fall is to first determine where you want it to fall and then turn 180 degrees and that's where it will naturally want to fall. 😁🤣😁
This has been my experience also. Even when the tree top is almost touching the ground.
A-yup, that's been my experience as well. And as it falls, it twists itself to drop directly onto the smaller "keeper" tree you'd hoped to save.
Oh yeah that’s probably that one thing I forgot to mention. The most important and most reliable method. 😂
A-men!
I don't think to make a joke out of a life threatening situation is a good idea you bunch of would be comedians,or should I say clowns
Y'also could get a bulldozer, and make them trees fall where you want them to fall. May not get the desired results on lumber quality, and then you'd have to deal with the root ball. Or, y'also could get a harvester to make quick work of them as well. That'd probably get you better logs for milling, but I have to question the cost effectiveness. But I like your approach. Just get out there with an axe and a saw, talk to the deer, and laugh at the bears. While forgetting what it was y'also were thinking about to begin with. Thanks as always for the video!
Well played, Mr. Hern; well played.
That was well said. Reading that made me forget what I was even thinking about. 😁
that works really well. just park the dozer where you want the tree to fall. works almost every time.
Cool video Wilson. Yallso is a word I am adding to my vocabulary 😁
I don’t have any interest dealing with those wacky Left-leaners, much prefer to address the Right-leaners- more sensible, realistic! 😂🇺🇸
Someone had to say it. 😂
If you don't like the way it leans, you can just look at it from the other side.
I suspect you spend a lot of time alone in the woods.
Y’allso seem to notice a lot about trees. :)
Y'also can get someone else to do it. Maybe that is what you meant to say. Thanks for the humor.
wow... that was as close to a treehug you could get... you'r brave! Yoallso can use the axe to determine the height of trees, but that's maybe a theme for the next video? Wilsons motto: "No huggin', just plain loggin'!"
Even that close was very uncomfortable, especially on camera. That won’t be the next video but I’ve been thinking about it for a future one.
It’s way more difficult here on the east coast where trees are rarely straight with big, goofy crowns. I’m envious of your tall, straight sticks without all the limbs. Thanks for sharing. Good stuff.
I can imagine so. it’s common practice here on the West Coast. I would be curious to know if this is commonly used on the East Coast too.
@@WilsonForestLands I do the same thing with my axe here in Florida, but I've also done a lot of felling in Oregon as well. I don't think anyone taught it to me, its just sort of something that makes sense to do when you're felling a bunch of trees.
One less thing to carry too.
Great video.
Loaded with humor & info.
Yes, I often stumble trying to pronounce"normal" word, too.
I tell myself it's just because I'm conscientious. ( Yes, it took me 3 times to spell "conscientious")
Now try to say conscientious three times fast. I just tried and failed.
Hey at least you could spell it!.
Trees don’t grow towards the sun. They grow away from the shade.
Mr. Wilson, I'm enjoying your practical tree kraft videos and especially the woody humor. I think you probably have the talent for a new profession.....a stand-up tree comedian?
Hmmm, I wonder if that’s even a thing. I will have to look into that. 😁
Got my wife to watch you make her laugh, she's a farm girl likes your sense of humor, thank you from the both of us
A lot of women just roll their eyes at me. Nice to know there are a few who laugh. 😁
I appreciate your extreme weirdness. It takes dedication and self confidence to reach that level. Thanks
Everything you said is sometimes right but details are often different.
A stand will often have a prevailing lean
Different species have their characteristics,
i.e. larch is sweepy leaning one way then growing away for awhile
Windy areas (ridge) will affect the grain depending on which
side is towards the open valley as the wing twists the stem.
Right hand twists is OK to a point but left hand will cull a pole or piling
On a breezy day the larch will sway together like kelp in the sea
Fir sweeps off the butt but often straightens out after 20-30 feet.
Fir often has long heavy coarse limbs that pull the stem that way.
Snow on the limbs will really pull a tree.
Limb bound stems in a clump can really cause issues.
With soil creep on a slope
the butts will develop a pistol butt curve as trees try to straighten up
while their roots move down hill.
Generally trees hang down the hill and grow toward the sun
This is a true story: About 20 years ago a neighbor asked me for some help to fell a tree on his property. I looked for lean, weight distribution, and safe drop directions. It was pretty straight and there was ample room in several directions. I asked, "which way would you like this tree to fall?" He looked at me, blinked a few times, and replied, "down?"
...and don't drop the ax on your foot.
An Axe as a Plumb Bob. Truly learned somthing new . Ive never even heard this. Thanks for the Video.
I make it a rule to Never Hug a tree that I am going to cut down........ I can't risk developing feelings for it!!!
I'm not a tree hugger either! I tend to turn my back to the tree, back up till my back hits the tree, then look up. Also makes it easier to visualize the landing spot by just looking up and down.
I enjoy your content.
Yallso teach me something with every video.
I now feel competent to go out and look at trees
😂😂😂😂
If someone catches you looking at trees and questions you about it, now you can tell them you are competent and fully qualified.
Ya’llso.. 😂
You have the best sense of humor!! Thank you
There was a near ironical moment where a guy with an axe was about to hug a tree.
I was trying to play a little mind trip with my viewers there. Hopefully none of them got hurt. 😁
Advice I learned from the late and legendary Norm Hall (inventor of the porta-wrap!) is to plumb the tree from all four cardinal directions. Extra helpful tip here in the Great Lakes region where we have more curvy stems with decurrent crown spreading.
When i go to cut a tree the first thing i do is," Ok you trees" STRAIGHT IN UP, . Give it a try. See which way it goes. Probably not where you want it. 😂😢 Your humor is refreshing.
🤣🤣 straighten up.. Wilson's humor is great, and I enjoy it as well 😉👍
Oh yeah the drill sergeant approach. I like it! 😂
And then there are quaking Aspen, the original "on second thought I think I'll go this way" tree. At least that's the stuff they pull around here.
Enjoyable content and great comments. Tell me, what more could you ask for?
Good video Michael. I once knew a Bob Plumb.
Dude was on the level
Nicely done. 😂
That fella knew how to play all the Right angles!
I used to watch a show that had Eve Plumb in it.
Brady Bunch? She was the pretty one.
Bhahahaha. You crack me up. love it. And learning.
Informative video without seeing any sawdust from a chainsaw or sawmill.
Flying sawdust tends to follow me around, I escaped it on that one. 😁
I think the axe method maybe the most common for loggers here in the PNW. Seen many tree fellers do it that way.
Yep standard practice here. I wonder if they do it as much on the East Coast too.
Love it, but you need stop talking to trees so much. 😉🤔
I carry a 1/2 hex nut on a string in my truck works great
Oh no... he's loosing his words like Joe Biden. 😟
I'd pay to see this guy had a comedy house! 😂
This is hilarious while being informational . Kudos to you.
Try looking at em? Do I win a prize?
I never thought of using an axe! Pretty nifty! 👍
I don't think that the tree hugging works so well. I tried that and the tree looked like it was on each side of the tree that it was leaning in the direction where I was standing at that time. So the ax plum bob idea sounds good. I think what men need mostly in advice, is to know how to pull a tree into roughly the direction you need it to go, and to know how far you can realistically pull a tree. I know the size has a lot to do with how far you can pull a tree. But there may be rough rules for knowing this?? I do not like the undercut notch method, it is much harder to get the notch to connect on the other side. Most people cutting trees are just trying to get the tree on the ground without risk to themselves and buildings near by.
Pulling a tree a different direction is just geometry, but how much you can change the direction it wants to fall depends on the size more than anything. A skinny tall tree is hard to wedge because you don’t have enough meat to work with. A tree can also be so large it’s difficult to wedge due to the weight, and needs to be jacked. But you can pull them a LOT. That’s the geometry- consider how much movement happens 100’ up when you lift one side just half an inch. It’s several feet.
It's a step ladder, it's a cutting tool. it's a plumb bob; no silly, its an axe.
It’s an equal opportunity axe.
Very good tips. I do have a cherry tree which trunk is changing direction of growth every couple of feet and I was very puzzled to determine where it wants to fall. Luckily it is away from any buildings, so wherever it'll try to drop would be fine with me. :)
I like this channel, good, valuable information sprinkled in some humor. I liked and subscribed.
Loving your videos and your sense of humor. I think the humor can be best described as, “Dad Joke Heaven.” Haha! Cheers!
Hey buddy, great video again.
You have a awesome office space to build your video's, awesome to see your numbers grow.
You aslo make me laugh 😂😂 saw & mill safely buddy
Thanks Craig. Yeah it’s been quite a ride lately with the numbers. I have seen your office has a nice background in the distance.
Your doing awesome, keep it up & wok safe, I am blessed also
Didn't think you were a tree hugger...lmao So, I think the Axe - Plum Bob is the best method because we usually have it with us out there.
Yallso.... got it 😂
👍
Thanks, great educational waffle. Hadn't realized trees lean towards the moron one side 😊
Àutism ASD.
I always call gravity the invisible rope.
Sounds like something my physics teacher would have said. 😁
I find that when I run into trees, I usually fall down! Your humor is subtle and addictive. 😅
I burn a y'all log at Christmas time.
Y’all probably know it’s good when y’all can burn a y’all log.
Great videobut very dangerous work be careful.
Always funny ,always educational, thank you mate
I think bucken billy ray would love this guy
Same method I thought up on my own the other day in the woods.. works!
😂
😂
Thanks, I'm not a tree hugger either! 😅
y’also made me chuckle again!
It’s good to give y’all a chuckle once in a while.
First person (I’ve seen ) to spell it correctly… (if you’re gonna use a contraction it should be the short form… not just a phonetic abomination!) 😅
I think we outdoorsey people have our own language!!! A guy at our work wants to make a book of the words we have either made up or always said (different) than the general public, LOL
If only I would have done that, I might remember most of the words I have made up over the years.
Look up when standing beside it!
"Y'also" is a perfectly cromulent abbreviation.
Cromulent, now that is a fun word.
Is this your property? Well manged forest if it is. Clean, open, and a lot of good timber. Bet that took years to get it into this condition.
Yes it is. You would definitely win that bet, it took years. 😁
I find spelling a word sometimes confuses the hell out of me, been spelling it my whole life.😊
Yeah that happens to me even more often. Sometimes I spell it right but it still looks wrong.
Two new words. Im impressed.
Gud video.. a faller usually can see the lean, and keeps a wedge handy.. the axe thing works gud too..
👍
What a great video. Thanks
Yes I get that thing, where regular words suddenly appear fantastical.
Good to know it’s not just me.
Hahahah I'm loving the bloopers😂
Seems to be one of the more popular part of my videos. 😁
Great style!
what part of CA are you in, some great property.
The part of California that is just north of the border of California. Southwest Oregon.😁
You know you want to hug that tree Wilson
Hey, thems fightin’ words. 😂
I agree. But you know yourself that you can make it fall the way you want it too
Yep, it just helps me know how much oomph I need to get them to go over. 😁
@@WilsonForestLands right. I've been in them situations many times
This is some universal logic, that applies to many other facets of life.
Thanks, Wilson.
