Spy x Family is heavily inspired by Cold War era East and West Germany, as that period had tons of overt spying between governments. It's also heavily implied in the episode that it was Frankie or one of his contacts that got the info on the women, and Frankie then passed it on to Twilight.
Yeah, it's basically Cold War James Bond (which is the best James Bond), but with a very silly mission, and some even sillier side missions, so it ends up being kind of a wholesome family sitcom with some twists, with a backdrop of post-WW2 memories of war, Stasi paranoia, and East vs. West tensions potentially leading to the destruction of the world.
I think they don't notice what is strange about the other that would tip them off to being spy/assassin because neither has lived anything like a normal life. Yor is so gullible for lack of normal social interaction. Loid doesn't see anything strange in her probably because all of his coworkers are high end spies. oh she can fight? nothing unusual there. He also doesn't notice Anya reading his mind because, when has he ever been around kids? he doesn't know a thing about what is normal for kids and families. And because they are all so unaware of what is normal they just fit together seamlessly. It is wonderful to see.
The whole vibe of this show is so late 50s - early 60s Ian Flemming James Bond but with a wholesome family twist. It is hard to find the words to describe the time period but the writer really does nail it. (yes, I am that old) It is a transitional time. Family, sex roles, morals, traditions. Its like you knew things were changing but for most it was still just talk and ideas percolating just below the public consciousness but out in the open things had not visibly changed much yet. I can imagine that it seems very strange to anyone who is young. (under 35?) But even something a small as "what if there is no mom?" A high end school that could pick and choose, really would not have cared back then and a broken family would have been seen as a big red flag. It was a different time, in both good and bad ways.
You know, there’s another cute anime that’s often compared to Spy x Family. It’s a 12-episode series called Buddy Daddies. Hope you’ll consider watching it. But only when it’s convenient for you. Fans ought to be polite when approaching the people they admire.
