I am a contributor to our local band, the Cleveland Orchestra. Included with my last contribution was a request that the Orchestra program the music of Florence Price. There is always hope.
I hope so too, would love to see the Cleveland Orchestra play the Price symphonies. But, as you may know, this quintet is being performed at the Cleveland Chamber Music Society later this month.
Thank you for posting this neglected beautiful work. I just discovered Florence Price a few weeks ago and I have listening to serious music since the late fifties.
The musical score shown is the 2021 revised edition, published by Classical Vocal Reprints in Fayetteville, Arkansas, correcting a number of typos in the original 2017 edition. Thanks to Prof. Jensen-Abbott of Albion College, who made this work available as its editor, and to Prof. Tomoko Kashiwagi of the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville, who made the corrections for the revised edition.
Great music! Florence Price was a professionally competent symphonist, but it's in her chamber works that her real emotion and soul come out. I especially liked the third. movement, the "Juba" scherzo (almost all uer scherzi are tagged "Juba," after the traditional African folk dance), which sounds very much like Scott Joplin to me.
It is a beautiful and brilliantly composed piece. Truly an American gift to music.
One of the greatest American romantics, thank you for this one!
Very, very nice. An African-American and a lady. These gems deserve more recognition!!
