It is actually subtly sweet and not too sweet like the other sweets. So if you taste mishti doi after tasting something sweeter, your taste buds can't properly feel the subtle sweetness and flavour of misti doi .

If you come to Kolkata again, you must try these sweets. Like Rosomalai, Lord Chomchom, Chanar Payes, Rabri, Jalbhara Sondesh, Makha Sondesh, Mihidana, Kachagolla, Baked Rosogolla. Eating food in our country is also scientific. So we eat curd after eating heavy and salty food like rice bread luchi vegetables currys etc. Especially sweet yogurt. Then eat dessert. Welcome to Kolkata, first capital of India. India is a very old and complex country where you will find many mix of old and new , mordern and ancient, multiple language, culture. Don't get confuse and don't trust strangers.
The one you got served wasn't Kolkata Style Biryani. Kolkata Biryani is not 'hot spicy' and doesn't even look like that. Real Kolkata Biryani is 'aromatic', 'light and fluffy', with fall-off-the-bone tender mutton... and it also contains potatoes.
Fish is a complex dish to eat in the first go because of all the bones. Before you eat, you need to understand which parts to eat and which parts to leave. And Hilsa is the most difficult as it is way too bony. I would not suggest any foreigners(even Indians who are not Bengali) to try any fish(especially hilsa) in the first go. But you can always try this authentic Bengali Bhetki Paturi as it is not bony at all. Chicken, Mutton and Prawn dishes are the best to have, I think. If you are especially interested in trying fishes dont forget to consult the waiters about which ones are less bony.
I know from your stand point these dishes will be spicy but I get amazed as some of my out of bengal friends, some south Indian friends say these dishes are very plain, not at all spicy, they want more strong spice😂😂, I doubt what will happen if you try their dish.
Ana it's very hard to enjoy mustard paste with mustard oil . It's very pungent & shall hit ur nose. Also illish fish has enormous bones which shall crack ur head. U can't enjoy fish with fork . Need to enjoy with ur own cutlery ( ur fingers)

You should see other Foreign Food Bloggers who came here in India and at Kolkata. And learn from them how to enjoy Indian cuisine. That Mustard Hilsha should be mixed with the rice instead of directly drinking the curry like a soup. And then that spicy potato (Alur Dom)... Wrap those potatoes with the luchi ( oil fried bread). Atleast ask some locals or waiters who were serving you,how to eat and enjoy, like the locals.😅😅😅 And Noooooo, don't put curd or anything in Biriyani please.
