Still want an Edsel. Love the design, and they're the few 50s car I can still afford. I missed the opportunity to get one in rusty condition, but cheap. I wish I made that irresponsible purchase.
I had a red yak back. It only recorded I few seconds and it wasn't the ones that could adjust the tones, but it was sooooo cool for the time for reasons I can't explain as an adult...
We recorded my Scottish grandma saying the word “bacon” on the YakBak so it sounded like BEAYYYKON and my brother and I would call her boss at work and make her come to the phone. Then when she’d answer and say “Hallo?” we would just spam BEAYYYKON BEAYYYKON BEAYYYKON BEAYYYKON BEAYYYKON and she’d get furious and hang up the phone 🤣
I study car companies very closely as an investor. This story is actually extremely relevant today, and describes very well the pitfalls of big companies hiring too many MBAs, beurocracy, and short term pandering to shareholders that ruins companies long term. It's what is so fascinating about Tesla, and part of why they are worth more than the next 5 automotive companies combined. Today Tesla is still a "divisive" company, but that is simply because most people have no idea what they are talking about, but this podcast litterally outlines why Tesla will be the world's largest automaker, and the pitfalls that are trapping the legacy OEMs and preventing them from adapting.
I feel bad for this poor E-Car. It had a vertical grille that was bad-looking, because Ford, or Fool Motor Company can't even design a freaking car. All the Edsel years should have the 1960 Edsel horizontal grille, so people wouldn't hate the Edsel's styling. Ford tried so hard to look European, which Packard is so good at making a vertical grille. If Ford knew anything about Italian car design companies, Ford should've hired one of them, so the Edsel would look good. I like all the Edsel years, but just not the vertical grille. Imagine if Edsel didn't fail, because of Ford would choose a horizontal grille over a vertical grille, and Edsel would make cool concept cars, and muscle cars with the 1960s Edsel horizontal grille. Ford is so dumb.
I live in Minnesota, my freind blake has been restoring one since high school, an edsel ranger. Drove me to school a few times in it. He's almost done with it now, full frame off restoration not a bold spared. Ill have a video on my channel once its finished.
I have seen a Edsel in person. I used to dj car shows precovid and my wife fell on love with it. The really big convertible top was the party trick at the show.
@@artnull13 bailouts, obsessive fans disregarding everything they do wrong, using their power and influence as one of the Big Three to put any small innovative business out of business so they remain in control, restriction of import cars, more bailouts.
Read an article online about it recently. Yeah, every single poor decision they could've possibly made. About the grille, not a huge fan, though I do agree with the designers about trying to differentiate it from other Detroit cars, and similar to European cars like Rolls Royce, Mercedes, Alfa Romeo as mentioned. I think Jeremy Clarkson has also described the Edsel grille as looking like a vagina.
It may not have been successful but the Edsel is in my opinion not a bad car at all. I like the design and the FE engines are great. FE stands for FordEdsel and they were used from 1958 till 1974 in trucks ( not sure when they stopped putting them in passenger cars). They were used in everything from trucks, muscle cars ( like the bullit mustang) and even racing ( like winning lemans). I’ve heard there were a few issues with the push button system inside of the steering wheel, I think they were electric? unlike for example Mopar which had better mechanical systems ( I own a couple of push button Desotos myself). I nearly bought a 58 Edsel a couple of years ago, it was a 4 door hard top with a 410 FE. A Edsel is definitely a bucket list car for me ( I collect unique cars that no one wants 😂, like Desotos)
Edsel is the symbol of American Excess. More superfluous than a giant fin, the whole idea and execution of the entire car was a perfectly timed bow placed at the very pinacle of American Hubris. Perfection in failure needs to happen at one's highest point. Edsel is that point. 60 years later we drive corporate copyrighted toasters. Still looking to hit bottom...
Come on James, i'll take you hunting. When you come visit Kentucky, hit me up and will go for what ever you wanna hunt. Then go do some mountain drifting. .
You should do a podcast on formula 1,2,3 continental grand touring, Le Mans, Indianapolis 500, British touring, rally, and he tried NASCAR once, Jim clark
26:48 Well, at least those top four names weren't totally "wasted", in that they all went on to be used for popular vehicles in the future, even if three out of the four weren't even Ford models --- two of the names went to Chevrolet, and one to AMC. :P
Wendy's does have a sandwich named after Dave, you can get a Dave's Single, Double, or Triple... so i guess there are actually 3 burgers named after him.
#1 at Wendy’s is a Dave’s single so they kinda did name a Sammich after Dave
I know in Canada we had a limited time Dave's big and juicey burger hahaha
I came here to post this. In Ontario we have the Dave's Triple.
These guys need to get out more lol. Jk.
The Dave’s double and Triple 🤣🤣

You guys should do a Past Gas about the Dutch motor/racing company Spyker.
I sat in a 2 different Spykers at Pebble Beach Auto show in about 2013, very cool cars. Their interiors are gorgeous.
Dang joe lost the ad raffle having to call himself a sweat bag😂
Wendy's already has a burger called Dave's Single/Double/Triple lol
Keep it juuuuuiiccced with Jungle Joe Winchester!
Jungle Joe Winchester sounds like a 60s drag racer's name

Doesnt wendys have like a dave's double???
You won't believe what my uncle calls this car... it rhymes with hunt car.
28:03 Nolan this may surprise you but you can go to Wendy’s and order a Dave’s Double it is a menu item no joke.
I was just about to comment the same thing 😂
The 1960 Edsels were a complete redesign, too. Looked a damn sight better.

38:09 did no one pick up on "Ed Sullivan" (Edsel) Edsel-ivan.
Need more past gas!
Robert McNamara is a playable character in Call of Duty Black Ops. He is shown defending Kennedy in the Zombies map Five.
He's also the peak wizzkid/inept bureaucrat that escalated, and massively mismanaged the Vietnam War. Not a good dude at all.
No bigger disaster than GM killing the EV1

They should do an episode on that too
This week on past gas: that time Ford screwed things up part 69
They did screw up a lot, you gotta wonder how the company is still running

The thing is, for every one of their fuckups (Edsel, Pinto, Flipover-Explorers) they had a bunch of other cars/trucks that sold like hotcakes.
@@joshcorvette oh FS you can’t be one of the oldest automotive titans and not have some great cars. The company as a whole though... SUS!
actually in 1990's Wendys did name a burger after Dave Thomas (Daves Big Classic) renamed Big Bacon Classic after he died.
Nolan acts like we don’t watch this for the jokes always so damn serious it’s annoying
Donut, Made an in depth podcast of Group B Rally

Let’s go!!! What a great trio #gimmethejuice
"Andante Con Moto" is actually a musical term in Italian
Keeeeeeeep itttt juiced!
I had a pink 59 Edsel Ranger 2dr. Loved it. Lol
From your profile pic, you look like that car would be perfect for you. And I don't mean that in a bad way.
What happened to the weekly secret? I was only here for that! 😎 Another great episode guys.
You know what, that 1960 Edsel Ranger looks pretty good. There, I said it.
Those fender-mounted "gunsights" are sick!
I know that you have virtual guests on your other shows, but I would love to see some guests on the podcast.
I was always told the Edsel grill was designed to mimic a vuh~jay~jay
I actually think the car looks pretty cool! Especially since you don’t seem them much!
That Ford Citation joke would have been a perfect lead into an OFF THE RECORD AD😅
Yo the rdj Dr Doolittle is actually really really good and well done and true to the original story
The new M3&4 are now to be referred to as a Medsel or M3dsel
Thank you so much it was a toss up between washing my car and this. You have made my day much easier for the next 1 hour.🔥😁👍
Why is Joe dressed like an 80’s Wendy’s fry cook!?🤷🏽♂️
O my goodness, four frickin' billion DOLLARS? On a single terrible car? That's a big ole flop.
I really like how the edsel looks
Andante con moto is actually a musical term meaning going with motion or at a walking pace with motion.
We can all take solice at least knowing that car is now in HELL. 😂
23:38 might be the best donut thing I’ve ever seen
There was a chevy citation
50:50 when I'm thinking what James is thinking and if Nolan don't stfu with his dreams. If I can't have them you can't either NOLAN!
“Joe, you gotta call the cops”
Holy shit, I just picked up the same Hotwheels GT40 the other day.
Lol I just got the Lancia Integrale

Yak backs were so classic.
Enjoyed the episode but got slightly more hyped over Joe’s murder mystery update 😂 keep us posted!
You guys should talk about the cart series
It’d actually be interesting to hear about Chris Craft boats
No secret of the week?? 😭😭😭
I'm 25 and know what you were talking about with Mr.Ed. And I proudly own a 59 Edsel Corsair.

Wendy’s did have a burger called the Famous Dave. Lol
Good sponsorships this week
Kevin Costner should play Henry Ford
Fords teaser ad a blurry car in the distance with simply " UGGGHHH WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT!? "
Wendy’s burgers are called Dave’s
Dave’s single double and triple
Come on James, i'll take you hunting. When you come visit Kentucky, hit me up and will go for what ever you wanna hunt. Then go do some mountain drifting. .
Wendy’s named several burgers after Dave. One being “Dave’s Hot and Juicy” lol
A neighbour's of my friend has one of these, it's a cool looking car, and this one has a solid body. Would make a decent platform for a custom
Andante con moto in reference to music means walking with motion.
I too, share Joe's love for Hot Wheels ❤❤❤
Hot Wheels are fun as hell. I customize them, too.

Oh, that’s a good budget... lol 🙏🛠
Ford made parts for the furnaces at the CT Camps in A.H's Germany.
At least it didn't block up if it gets rear ended like the Pinto!
23:36 these all sound frighteningly close to “Huayra”.
I really like this pod cast
Wendy's has Dave's single lmao
You should do a past gas on the dodge brothers
I'd say more alfa romeo vibes than bmw
I have always wanted an Edsel wagon.
Henry Ford played by Michael Gross (Bert gummer in tremors)
I'm 22 and I know the marvelous Mr. Ed
I haven't see the video yet, but I assume this is about the Edsel. And I love that car.
Wait Wendy’s does have burgers name Dave. 🤣🤣 Dave’s Single, Double, and Tripple. 🤯🤢
It was a company, not a single car 😂
I went to EDSEL FORD HIGH SCHOOL in Dearborn, MI and I blame it for all the difficulties in my life! 🤪
Dodge Rampage

44:09 Sheeeeeeeesh 🥶
Wendy's does and its called Dave's Hot N' Juicy
You guys should do a past gas on the origins of jeep somehow. Idk a lot about where they came from so it's maybe a bad idea but idk, it could be cool.
Probably been answered, but what happened with the bone????
