How to replace saggy broken door fabric VW MK4 jetta golf bora

I've had to do this several times to a few of my cars. The original fabric has a sort of foam backing material similar to the headliner fabric. After many years and lots of heat and sunlight the foam degrades into a sticky mess. \to replace it start by removing the door panel. after cutting the plastic welds holding the door card in, remove it and peel away the old fabric. After scraping the old foam away, spray adhesive on both surfaces, then adhere them together. now either plastic weld the tabs back or run small screw into the tabs at a right angle to re-secure the panel to the door panel.

My foam turned to a super sticky greasy paste. I used a plastic scraper to get the lion share of it off, then used acetone to remove the remaining residue, then a quick wipe down with some isopropyl alcohol. Makes a clean and residue free panel to work with.

Dude nice. I had this same exact issue and i’m almost done fixing it, my only issue is re-applying to door panel back into it’s spot. All of my plastic knobs were broken off upon removal. Any suggestions??

Tyler Gable yes that was my main problem too. That’s where the screw step comes in. I even ran that billy band shit across the back from one good screw point to the other like top to bottom. But I’d say screws at an angle into what’s left of the tabs x20

Tyler Gable if one seems a bit sketchy, cover the screw in epoxy to cement it to the cardboard. Lastly a did run a few long screw from like the panel snap arms out at a right angle so the head was holding the board in also. Hopefully some of these work for you. Good luck

I just did mine and used JB Weld for plastics on tabs that were long enough and on tabs that broke off I drilled a small hole and ran a zip tie though it. I also used headliner glue because the other spray adhesive was too weak.

Hey I want to do this but my driver's side door insert is pushed in and I can't find a new one. Any suggestions?

Megaice10 you mean the cardboard is separated from the door panel? No problem they usually are. It needs to come off anyway to recover. Or if you don’t need to recover just follow the last half of the steps for reattaching the center panel. 5:10 on. I basically replace the weak plastic welds with screws, then straps of metal band across the back. Whatever it takes to re secure the cardboard center to the plastic panel.

I go to junkyard “Pick Your Part” there are usually many mk IV there and you can practice taking apart doors and find good condition inserts to recover with fabric or paint.

hank smith I found wire brush bristles got clogged immediately. Yes finding good royalty free music is that hardest part.

The purposes was replacing the fabric not designing a show car. Sold this car a few months after and the new owner liked the doors sooo
