The story behind this song is one of the most hearbreaking stories in rock history. David Gates wrote a masterpiece tribute that tears me up everytime I hear it. I know you felt it too, Shawn and I haven't even watched the video yet. Guitar Man is another great song by Bread too.
I completely understand. My mother passed away from Alzheimer's in 2014 and my husband passed away from covid in 2021. This song hits different now. Prayers for you on the death of your mother.
The actual meaning of this song meant more to me when I got older and could not get back my folks that I lost...😥 Quite possibly one of the saddest songs ever! 😢
This really brought up some memories 💔 for me too. Ot made me think lf my mom and dad too. It also made me mourn my youth. Missing that energetic girl 😢
“Amazingness” is right! Every time I heard another Bread song on the radio, it brought a smile to my face. This song is heartbreaking, it’s real life! I lost my mom when she was 38 and I was 9. I never thought to relate this song to my mom, but it fits. Thank you for giving me a new perspective on the meaning of these lyrics. I love your reaction.
I had this on 8-Track tape when it came out in 1972. My dad passed away two days after my 15th birthday in 1973. This song absolutely made me cry every time I played it after that. Wore that tape out and shed a lot of tears doing it.
I’m so sorry you lost your dad at such a young age. And right after your birthday, too. I hope you were eventually able to enjoy your birthdays without the pain of that loss.
@@terri2494 I was able to enjoy my birthday for many years after that until recently. I married my wife who shared the same birthday as me six years later. That had always been a dream of mine to find someone with the same birthday as me. We shared 41 birthdays together until she passed away from cancer three years ago July 26th. I’m right back where I started so many years ago. Thank You for taking the time to comment. I really appreciate it.
@@steveturner3999 Oh, I’m sorry you lost your wife. That’s a tough one. It is neat that you two shared the same birthday. Hopefully you’ll get to the point where you can celebrate it again, remembering the good times and not just the pain. Praying for comfort for you and your family.
Man, I remember this song hitting me hard. I just took it as a sort of a breakup song, never catching some of those lyrics. I feel the some way about my mom RIP. Peace.
100%. This song hits both ways for me. In 2023 I lost my partner of 37 years to cancer. It was sudden, six months from the time of diagnosis until the end. It changes your whole world, and I can 1000% relate to that feeling of I would give up everything to have them back here. I'm sorry you had to go through that with your mom too. My mom was taken from a massive stroke, which is also hard because it is so sudden.
David Gates was the heart and soul of "Bread". His angelic voice and winsome lyrics speak to our souls, in so many heart wrenching ways. Blessings to all who have loved and lost.
Until today, I had always thought this song was about a lover. Listening closely to the words today I realised it was more appropriate for a parent, in my case, my mother. I am so grateful for your channel as you have given me the opportunity to listen to songs that have been a part of my life in a different way. Thank you.
Really enjoyed your comments Shawn. So sorry to hear about the loss of your mom. And yes, what makes this song special is its relevance to the many situations of loss that we may experience as human beings and the importance of never taking what we have for granted.
Lost my pop in 2015 five days shy of his 91st birthday. My Mom will be 92 next month, God willing. I have always said if I outlive her, this will be played at her funeral along with Jenn Bostic’s Jealous of the Angels.
You are right. You can fill in the blank with anyone yo loved. Yes, he wrote it about his father, but it takes my heart right to a special girl that I took for granted, and yes, someone took her away.
This song chokes me up too, Shawn. I'm so sorry about your beautiful mother. 💐I've lost both my parents. I especially miss my mom. This song is akin to Mike and the Mechanics, The Living Years, (which I know you've reacted to). Very touching and heart-grabbing, this song....❤
When I was younger, I heard it as he was talking about a lover because I didn't get deep into the lyrics. But then I really listened and realized and man...did it hit hard.
It never fails every time I listen to this song, I end up shedding some tears. It's very a very personal song for me too, Shawn. I thought I'd suggest a new band to give a listen, if interested. "The Association - Never My Love - On The Ed Sullivan Show" (by the channel: The Ed Sullivan Show) --This song is a pop standard it was written by American siblings Don & Dick Addrisi. But The Association was the first band to top the charts with the song. The Association was an American sunshine pop band from California. They had several songs to hit the top or near the top of the charts. So, there's more of their tunes to explore in future, if interested. And as always, I enjoyed rocking with you, thanks for sharing.
Thanks a lot. Great tune. Two huge covers (IMO better than the original) are to be discovered. One by Jude (quite similar arrangements) and the other in reggae style by Culture Club with Boy George singing lead. Love both versions.
Shawn, My favourite from Bread. Has a cool pulsating beat mixed with cool vocal. Suggest: ..."What about me" by Anne Murray...."Big yellow taxi" by Joni Mitchell....."Be my girl" by John and Jacob......"Silver threads and golden needles" by Linda Ronstadt
We can't get back those we have lost. The best you can do for them is be the best You that you can be. Another tribute song is Dan Fogelberg's biographical Leader of the Band. He wrote it for his father Lawrence Fogelberg, who was in fact a leader of a band.
I played this album so much when I came out. Yes I thought about my Mom as well . She was a beautiful person and I appreciated all she did to raise me❤️I miss her 😢
DAVID GATES (leader of the band BREAD) is a genius songwriter (lyrics and music) and his voice magnifies his compositions. However, until you listen to what most reviewers and fans recognize as his ultimate masterpiece (in three movements) "Suite: Clouds, Rain" (from his solo album 'First', 1973), you will not yet have a completely accurate idea of the exceptional master that he is. Thanks.
David Gates truly was a great singer and this group yes was truly one of the biggest underrated groups of all time!!! Along with three dog night this group should have been into the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame!!! But we we have learned later on the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame committee started to induct mainly hip-hop and rap crap what a shame leaving behind truly some of the greatest music of all time!!!💔💔💔

Guitar Man... yes!!!
Makes me miss my dad. He was my hero.
Same here.
Me too . My dad ,brother and husband all died in 2021. I miss all of them.
David Gates wrote this song after his father passed. I miss my mother too. She died in 2018 from Alzheimer's and this song always slays me.

Did she ever try the brain vitamins? They say it could help with that. Very sorry for yr loss
@@trb2021so sorrrrrry😢😢
@@michaelasay8587 No, they may not have had those available 10 yrs ago. I don't know. And she was 80 when diagnosed so it may have been too late.
@@michaelasay8587Thank you! It's been tough.
David Gates wrote this for his deceased father, not a lost lover as 16-year-old me thoght at the time. Touching song and great reaction as always.
@@ScottHarlow-y3m yes he did. It helped my father get through grieving the loss of his father.
I thought the same thing as a teenager.

"This song's got it, baby" -- well, it's Bread and all of their hits _had it_ 😊
This song was about David Gate's father.
Lost dad young way back in 86. Mom in 2009. My husband of 40 years in 2018. I miss them all, but my husband damn near killed me.
Me too

He wrote it about his dad that had passed away but, he said that he intentionally wrote it to fit any relationship of love.
Also makes me think of losing a parent. David Gates has great solo songs too.

Beautiful song. My favourite version is sung by Olivia Newton-John. It's a much covered song.
