    I have a Lhasa of 2years he is also having same conditions mentioned as in video i.e. testicle stuck in abodmen. Please suggest now can we do the surgery? What can be pros and cons of surgery?? What should be the age by which we can operate? Is there any alternative treatment?

    Hello, I took my GSP to the vet for a well puppy exam when he was 12 weeks old. She didn't say anything about undescended testicles at that or future appointment. He is now 6 months old and something definitely doesn't look 'normal'. I'm concerned that she didn't notice it and am considering changing vets. Also, this is the second litter from the parents the breeder used for my pup. I will inform him when I am sure there's an issue, but wondered ... shouldn't he have known?

    • @Tanouuuu
      @Tanouuuu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The breeder could have known or not. It's a recessive gene that will present in 25% of the litter and you could only see it in males though females can have that gene (it would not affect them as they have no testicles).
      Now if you bought the dog for breeding you ca complain as this is a defect, if it's a company dog though, you case will be more difficult...

      The study is pretty vague and also doesn't seem to mention duration at all. I'd bet that the longer an undescended testicle is left unaddressed, the more likely it is to be prone to tumor, thus at 7 months, you'd be lower on that statistical average. However, I'm not sure anyone can say how far below said average you'd be at 7 months. I would also suggest that pre-puberty correction is probably significant in being lower on that average. Personally, I think I'd keep the pair if he wasn't post puberty(assuming the vet can descend it into the scrotum), and just keep an eye on them. But he should still have decent hormonal support with just one.

    Hi.. I have just been told by my vet that my young greyhound of 16 months old has only one testicle. They have advised that i should have him castrated as the other one cannot be felt and it could cause the dog to have cancer in later life. He is well bred and showing great potential to be a top dog and perhaps good enough to go to stud. In your opinion will i have to have him completely castrated or could they operate to try and remove the one that cannot be found. regards, ricky.

      @DrLera  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to pay the price now or you pay the price later. If the testicle has not dropped after a year of age the likelihood of the testicle dropping is almost zero. I would start putting a plan together and figuring out what you need to do to save the money or apply for something like Care credit to get the procedure done. You could always shop around at different veterinarians if you are financially constrained to see who would do it for the least expensive. That is going to be an exploratory surgery and I can't imagine it would be very inexpensive if both the testicles are truly in the abdomen. Sometimes if the testicles are superficial and not actually in the abdomen then it would be less costly

    Hypothetically if there are say 3 male puppies in a litter and one of the pups has a retained testicle and the other two are normal would the normal boys be carriers of the gene that manifested the crypto male? Would it be overkill to also neuter the normal males just to be cautious or better to do a test breeding before throwing away the baby with the bath water?

    • @DrLera
      @DrLera  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello, yes I would think that the "normal" boys are most likely carriers for that gene of cryptorchid disease. So according to the philosophy of trying to promote the healthiest gene pool, none of the offspring should be allowed to reproduce. That being said, of all the diseases that could be prevented if that is the worst disease the dog has, then I think you should consider yourself pretty lucky.

If your dog seems sexually frustrated, take him in to be fixed. My German Shepherd dog just had surgery to neuter him. He had one testicle in his abdomen. The vet went in and removed it with the normal testicle. The testicle in his abdomen did not look normal he said. He sent it to a lab to make sure it had not turned cancerous. One would think that it would not create any health problems for your dog directly by leaving the testicle that is already in the scrotum. The concern by veterinarians is that you would be propagating a potential disease in the gene pool if you were to try and breed the German shepherd. There are pros and cons to leaving animals intact meaning with their reproductive organs just as there are pros and cons to sexually altering meaning neutering or Spaying dogs

      Most likely it is okay for him to still undergo anesthesia and surgery. It's recommended that you perform the preoperative blood work to make sure all his organs are functioning normally and also a good idea to perform an electrocardiogram to look for any evidence of heart arrhythmias and or enlargements. Since you have a French bulldog wouldn't be a bad idea to have the airway evaluated since they are very prone to brachycephalic syndrome

      If I have a patient that has one testicle that is undescended and the other testicle that is descended and they are a large or giant breed dog I would recommend waiting till they are about 12 to 13 months ago before neutering and or removing both of us

      You don't have to remove the other testicle that is in the scrotum if you don't want to. That testicle is healthy most likely. The testicle that is not in the scrotum does need to be removed because it is at a much higher risk of turning into a tumor.

      The chances of the other testicle dropping are decreasing. You can give it till about 9 months of age. He's got a huge bulge and it was weak being and they said that was normal but now it's bigger and it's bright red blood today and he was whining in pain. Could not sit or lay. Any thoughts about how I can deal with this or make it more comfortable or what's going to happen from here how can the doctor fix that I don't know?
