I remember being in absolute awe of the gladiators when I was a kid. I'd watch on that little 18" tube TV and on that tiny TV they looked like giants. I was awestruck every episode and glued to the TV. I wanted the toys so I could be a gladiator, every kid did. Now I think of the money they must have made from the show itself, merchandise, live promotions and every other angle they pushed and it breaks my heart knowing that my childhood heroes were treated so damn poorly. Those men and women kept a generation engaged and entertained and got us all outside and in the gym striving to be healthy. They deserve so much more than they were given. They WERE the show. I don't remember anyone that cared about the contestants. I can't name a single one, but I still remember every single one of the gladiators.

    • @RonnieM90

Yes, this is what I was thinking, too. I grew up on Power Rangers. I also read that the actor who played Billy, David Yost, was treated unfairly because he was gay. After Yost left the show, he attempted to change his sexual orientation with conversion therapy for two years. Eventually, he had a nervous breakdown that resulted in his psychiatric hospitalization for five weeks. After he checked out, he moved to Mexico for a year and eventually accepted his sexuality.

This was the show that convinced me that the general Idea floating around during that time that women were weak was flawed and that given the chance they could out shine a lot of men at the same tasks and sports. I dare say it help shaped my world view on equality and equity. There were days other dudes would temporarily convince me that my beliefs were wrong and make me question why I believed it, and then Id remember a clip of this show and watching not just those 2 but all the women, including some of the contestants competing for glory. I hope they know that, even if they weren't getting paid a lot, that they were helping in changing the landscape on gender equality for a lot of people.

Love your video. There's a video about Futurama that gives credence to your theory about shows becoming popular. Matt Groningen said after Futurama took off, the execs at fox, whom never had faith in the show and hated it frim the beginning started acting like they came up with everything that made the show popular. I've said it many times, execs getting involved with movies, music, or books will always make something not so bad into complete dumpsters full of diapers during the summer. Before the film Heaven's Gate, studios were mostly hands off. After the huge loss the film Heaven's Gate had, they decided to go full meddling. It eventually creeped into TV. Music got shaffted by Tipper Gore and the PMRC, while books have gotten the shaft since the printing press was invented but was wrapped up in the whole comic books are evil scare of the 40s to 60s. There are a million ideas that come to thease execs every day that always leaves me wondering how many great shows, movies, albums, or books I missed out on because some exec didn't think that it would get them a good enough bonus at the end of the quarter.

I know this isn't the same sport, but I'm reminded of when Detroit Lions legend Calvin Johnson (aka Megatron) retired. He had some jabs for both the Lions team and the league as a whole.
He accused the Lions brass of constantly pressuing team doctors to clear players for action that they knew weren't healthy yet. Calvin placed almost all of the blame on the team, rather than the medical staff.
And he accused the league of not giving a sh1t about player safety, well-being, or longevity, despite all their virtue-signaling about supposed high-tech protective gear, concussion research, etc. He said the league treats players like disposable pawns.

It was damn near a tradition of watching every season of American Gladiators. Then one day it was just different.. You didn't see the same ones that you were used to watching on TV. It's a damn shame how some of them went and spiraled to addictions, and stuff but its amazing that they're still together and cared for one another. Side note Ice is still fine as hell SHEEEESH.

Gold is actually a 2nd cousin of mine, once removed, or something like that. I never got a chance to meet her.
I used to watch American Gladiators occasionally when I was babysitting on Saturday nights.
The way the athletes were treated makes me really sad and angry. That tour schedule was brutal. I can't imagine being dependent on steroids and pain pills while trying to perform physically. I have been on both for many years due to chronic health issues.
As more and more dirt comes out about the entertainment industry from my childhood to my kids' childhoods, it is crazy how you always find out how unethical many of the owners and producers of these shows were, and how poorly they treated their best assets, the actors and athletes.
This was a great TH-cam video! Thanks.

I can't believe that other major sports companies didn't purchase this IP. If Vince bought them, he could have moved the IBF over to show and pushed it up. Yeah, in conversion it would be a payout of about 940 dollars per performance. If they made it start to finish, that would be around 14,000 per year. Comparing today to them that would be around 21,000 per year. That would be around the average income of most people in America in 1989. So, at the time, it was not a terrible wage.
I think the pay being more, would be justified. If they provided room and board with a proper gym and at least 50% of food costs, going up to 600 an episode would have been a good start, along with having a medical team, I think that would have been a solid base platform.
