Sue said some years later that the scheduling of the semi finals affected her. If she had played first, then the pressure of Wade's win wouldn't have affected her nerves so much
She changed her technique on her forehand over the years, as in the early days it was very erratic. A couple of years before this, she worked on hitting with more topspin as a way to keep her forehand in court more.
C'est incroyable de voir ces longs échanges sur le gazon à Wimbledon et ce jour là Wade a su dominer Evert qui était pourtant la favorite et le numéro un mondial !
The standard here is extremely good, especially considering the wooden rackets and lack of modern fitness/strength conditioning. Female tennis players, and indeed the men, didn't have the raw power of players today, but the finesse and skill is the same.
I see it more that today's players have racket technology to give them more power, and they don't have anywhere near the same artistry and finesse...especially when it comes to playing full court -- i.e., at the net too.
I heard Chris say in a 1996 interview that this is the one match in her career, she wishes she could 'replay' over. Its no wonder. They played a total of 46 times and Wade won only 6 times. Evert played Stove 22 times and never lost at all. This was her Wimbledon to win and had she beat Virginia ( statistically very likely indeed) she had the title in the bag.
@@hardsam68 stop insulting evert fans saying we are weepy over this loss. Evert is regarded by her record to be an all time great. Virginia is considered a very good player : big difference , 18 slam titles vs 3
I think Novotna is more talented but Wade was mentally tougher and more determined. Yes their playing styles are similar. Big first serve, excellent volleyers, a bit stiff, big forehands that could be inconsistent but big weapons when working, more defensive backhands but could for approaching or mixing the pace up and drawing baseliners in against their will sometimes. Wade's backhand pass was better, she could come over it to pass while Jana seemingly could not, but Jana was a way better court mover. All you have to do is look at Virginia's facial expression and see how relaxed she was. The pressure was on Evert. Chris said she was aware since the beginning of 77 that Wade was preparing for Wimbledon that year, obviously the Centennial was a special occasion and the only time the Queen made an appearance. Evert also had two previous high profile matches that she said exhausted her mental resources----the first ever matchup against a 14-year old Austin and beating Billie Jean King convincingly at Wimbledon for the first time. Regardless, Chris wasn't ready for this match for whatever reason and the winners were flowing from Ginny's racquet that day.
Chrissie was the classiest of all. No whining about net chords, no trying to milk the crowd, no arguing with line calls, always friendly congratulations if she lost. Though I loved Martina's play more - and admired her determination and athleticism - it always annoyed me that she brought with her all those character flaws above with her. She would always claim them as positive: "I wear my heart on my sleeve" - but they were unseemly.
I will never understand why Evert lost this match. She was so dominant against Wade. Evert was 3-7 In Wimbledon finals. At least 2 of those she should have won.
A mixture of reasons I think. Chris said some years later that her previous match against Billie Jean King, where she'd won for the first time on grass against her, had taken a lot out of her mentally. She also talked about how the pressure really got to her - she was the huge favourite to win and it really got to her. There was also the crowd factor - Chris said that the vocal home support for Wade got to her a bit. And of course, Wade played probably the best match of her life.
That’s because after playing Austin for first time and beating King 6-1,6-2 she went into this match 31 wins to 3 losses and did not expect a real fight from Virginia who played the match of her life, name a match she played better. Rookie mistake by Evert , being overconfident instead of preparing for a real fight it being Wimbledon . Virginia deserved to win , she just played better. Evert was lucky to win the second set and wade did not get discouraged.
Chris said many years later that if she could have one match back, this would be the one. It still annoyed her that she lost. She was strangely flat in this match. Playing the up and coming Tracy Austin and then getting her first ever win over Billie Jean King on grass had really drained Chris emotionally.
Wade perhaps relieved that she wasn't up against Goolagong here. Not that Wade's record against Evert was good, but she had a real mental block against Goolagong and only won 1 of their 17 matches. Most of the losses were easy straight sets too.

Wade is just not consistent enough against Evert who typically gives you almost no free points. I understand the head to head pretty easily. Wade, according to King who played her a bunch of times, and also has a dominant head to head, was also very predictable in her hitting patterns and point construction on all she did, serve, despite her great serve, volleys, groundstrokes, crosscourt or down the line patterns, even what sides she picked when she had to guess on a shot or her movement patterns. Evert was always pretty ungracious after losses though, except when it was to Navratilova, who she seemed to (rightly) have an overabundance of respect for. Even opponents she overall had much more trouble with than Wade like Goolagong, Austin, or Court she came up with snarkish and dismissive comments after nearly every loss. I think she said something after losing to Austin at the 79 US Open that she didn't care that much, that day. And Goolagong being so relaxed, uncaring, and non nervous which is a problem for her against most of her rivals, unnerved nervy Wade even more.
Virginia wanted it more and badly, Evert played tentative and even (don't know if this is the right word here) "submissive".... Evert stated herself she let the crowd get to her especially in that final set and basically said and i'm paraphrasing here, it's yours virginia, take it"....
A mixture of reasons I think. Chris said some years later that her previous match against Billie Jean King, where she'd won for the first time on grass against her, had taken a lot out of her mentally. She also talked about how the pressure really got to her - she was the huge favourite to win and it really got to her. There was also the crowd factor as you say - Chris said that the vocal home support for Wade got to her a bit. And of course, Wade played probably the best match of her life.
The same Austin who beat her the next 5 times they played until Chris finally got another win at the US Open next year.
@@travisstrong5389 HUH? evert is known as one of the most if not THEE most gracious male or female of all time. If evert was dismissive of her lost to wade at the 77 it was because she had the OVERWHELMING head to head record against her and rightfully thought she would and should win, but had a letdown after beating king for the first time on grass and earlier facing austin for the first time. As it was evert never lost to wade again and their head to head ended 40-6 in evert's favor. IF evert said anything like you posted about her loss to austin at the 79 open it was probably most likely because she wasn't up for the fight and just didn't have it in her that day, not that she didn't really care, but she couldn't find the motivation and tenacity to care for whatever reasons.
@@tomschmitz261 Look at her comments after losing to Goolagong at Wimbledon 80, even though her career liftime record on grass vs Goolagong is a dead tie 4-4, and Goolagong in fact has more grass slams than her (the more grass slams is partly since Evert skipped Australia often yes). That isn't someone she has an overwhelming record on grass atleast over, and she still basically said the same things. Steffi Graf and Carling Bassett are two people who said they found Navratilova way more gracious than Evert, and Bassett used to be good friends with Evert in her playing days.
@@tomschmitz261 and while you are right Evert owns Wade of course the "never lost to again" is a pretty pointless point when Wade was about to turn 32 at the time of this match already, LOL! Chris Evert even never beat Steffi Graf again after her first ever loss to her at about 31 and 4 months, younger than Wade was here, and Graf herself was only 16 and had not even won a pro tournament yet at the time of that first win, and would never lose again.
Wow, the game sure has come a long way. This looks like badminton at a senior center.
This is art. Not a slugfest. I doubt if few players could use wooden rackets now.
@@charleskristiansson1296 Art? Like paint by numbers in special ed class? It's not the racket--as the men's game at this time would make clear. Rather, it's just that the women's game hadn't developed at all by this time--and wouldn't until Navratilova made her big transformation in the early '80's.
You know nothing about tennis
@@reds10001 Nonsense, I'm just being honest.
@- Anthony I'm certainly not a fan of the screaming tactic--though two of the top four all-time were screamers--Serena and Seles. Fortunately, with Serena gone--and not missed by me--there's no more prominent players doing it.
Pas trop vite les filles
Yes, but the rallies are far more versatile. Besides, you simply can't bash the ball with a wooden racquet.
Chris Evertt was boring and predictable. Wade was aggressive and fun to watch!
Well, being,, boring and predictable" brought her 18 GS titles and the most titles at RG in women tennis... So I guess a lot of young players would like to be boring and predictable if that's what makes you a legend of the game
@@alexcocheci8549 She played Djokovic-type baseline low-error, but also low-risk, tennis. She had a method of paying which worked but, as with Djokovic, it wasn't exactly great to watch. It was alright if she was playing someone who played attacking tennis and provided a contrast - Navratilova, Wade or Goolagong for instance - but if she was playing someone who played like her, it was pretty tedious stuff. Her style was similar to today's women players, but without the power racquets. She was impeccably polite and well-mannered.
Alex Cocheci: Blah, blah, blah.... 🥱
Wade for me was boring and had an ugly game. It was exciting to see her win her but I never found her fun or exciting to watch like Goolagong, Mandlikova, King, or Navratilova by a long ways. She certainly wasn't fluid or pretty to watch, even Evert was moreso, only someone like Austin or Shriver were less so.
@@alexcocheci8549 Well Graf won even more GS titles (22) and many people say she was boring, cold, and mechanical too. In fact even more say that about her than Evert. It is a matter of taste but winning a lot does not neccessarily mean you are fun to watch. Sampras is another example, and Djokovic might be the best example of that of all time. Nearly everyone hates to watch him play, finds him super mechanical, he has almost no fans, but he has 17 slams and has or atleast had a good shot at the mens slam record before Covid.
Always felt that judging by their play, by the way they acted on court, between points, etc, Wade played like a hungry tigress, while Evert played (and acted) like she was a dainty TOO feminine bordering on submissive weekend player out for a nice fun "hit" on a sunny sunday afternoon.. Simply Wade wanted it more, and Evert did not...
Seeing evert as a fun player is stretching it a bit don't yerthink??! Bit like saying Judi Denchis ok at acting!! I know you're having a joke to some extent!
@@ianspriggs7158 You don't understand I meant Evert's attitude and lackadaisical play in this match. She acted like the match was just a "hit and giggle".. Strange for her, in fact, Evert admitted in the third set, the crowd and occasion got to her so much that she in her own words in regards to Wade "the match is yours".... No wonder why Evert has said over the years that this is the one grand slam match she wishes she could do over... She was beyond the favorite to win the tournament, as she would have faced Betty Stove in the final, a player she never lost to and rarely lost a set to.
Hi again Tom. I do agree with your comments.i think both players knew that this was Wade s last hurrah! And wasn't evert affected by the pangs of romantic lurve 😅?
@@tomschmitz-dj1fg She did nearly lose to Stove at Wimbledon 75 though. Stove won the first set and it got to 5-5 in the 2nd, she was overpowering Evert somewhat but Evert was able to sneak out the 2nd, then Stove went away completely in the 3rd.
Seems like they are playing in slow motion
It's called finesse and not slugfest aided by technology for cloned versions of the game.
Matthew, try playing w a wood racket of that era. Then tell us how it went:)
@@kennethbrady I understand just seems sooooo 🐌slow thats all:)
@@matthewrankin5025 True:)
so boring
Did Chris tank this? Hard to believe she could lose this match. She didn’t seem like she cared about winning. Maybe wanted Ginny to have her moment ? Weird
Evert forced to lose by M15/ CIA so Brit could win jubilee year just like Murray did when Federer was also forced to lose.
