These were released nearly a year ago, I bought a black one from Sweetwater (limited to 150 in black). It’s a great guitar that I’m glad I bought, I enjoy playing it as much as my Gibson semi hollows. Very chunky neck and they are heavy (typical for 355’s), mine’s just a shade under 10 pounds but it feels very balanced, the weight feels equally distributed unlike heavy Les Pauls which can really feel very body heavy. Love the ebony fretboard and the ‘57 Classics sound great, nice build quality too. It’s a nice package (great case too) for the price, def. recommend.
I've been a fan of Ellegarden since the mid-2000s. I desperately wanted the Gibson version a few years back but when I finally had the money for it, the last one in the EU (in a shop in Denmark St) had its neck warped. Coincidentally we're putting on an Ellegarden tribute night in London at the end of July so I'm glad Ubukata san is finally getting more recognition around the world!
Position 6 reminds me of the crackly lofi intro on Wish You Were Here. I could see it coming in handy for creating calm ambient background tracks on a looper and playing lead over them.
Positions 4, 5 and 6 are very useful in high gain situations where a low cut removes the mud. Also useful in a mix where a specific frequency needs to cut through. :)
I owe one of these, an Olive Drab, and play it nearly every day. Worth every penny. I come from a metal and blues background. This thing is the Blues. Think B. B. King. But then it handles heavy gain just fine if you want to push it. Tone for days. Two things: First the Varitone is... for certain things. I wouldn't focus on it nor judge this or any guitar by it. I just feel like you'll miss it if it was gone. Think of it as a bonus from old days. Second the weight. This is the heavist guitar I own. It's heavier than my explorers and this thing is semi-hollow! Buy a nice padded strap for it. I can not see any reason I'd ever get rid of this guitar. It forces me to play differently and explore and just sounds amazing. Not 100%, but I believe Dave Ghrol's is based on this and he has in the past played a Gibson verson of Shinishi's guitar. Now those are rare.
Thanks for sharing! I'm definitely tempted to get one of these but I'm not sure if the weight is going to be for me. Also, as boykeschaafsma1117 mentioned, Grohl has a Trini Lopez, then had several custom "DG-335"s made for him by Gibson that are based on the Trini.
I didn't expect to see Ellegarden on this channel ever! If you want to check out tracks with Shinichi Ubukata playing and lyrics in english, I recommend: Ellegarden - Salamander Ellegarden - Marry Me Nothing's Carved in Stone - Out of Control
Been eyeing these for a while now. It’s a better “deal” than the DG since it’s got a few nice features like a prettier fingerboard and the bigsby trem etc. Thanks for doing a demo guys!
I've been the complete opposite. Been buying the "Lesser brands" lately, early in my guitar life, I started with USA guitars only, now I'm really enjoying upgrading Epiphones and Squiers. Especially when they're on sale.
I love the olive drab green one. And yes, it does remind me of Chris Cornell as well. And I’ve always wanted to have that guitar, but I believe it was a limited edition Gibson for an amount of money with which you could buy a Gibson 335, a Les Paul Standard, an SG Special and a couple of really great pedals. It has always been my dream to have an olive drab green ES-335 even before Chris Cornell got his (I swear, not kidding!). Now…. I have a BEAUTIFUL black Gibson ES-347. No idea why Gibson never reissued that model, because it’s one of the most versatile 335-ish guitars. I bought it brand new in 1987 (I think) and as much as I would love to, I don’t think I could ever afford another guitar like it. Yet that’s exactly what I want! I want a guitar to not just function as a backup guitar, but it needs to add something as well. Something my ES-347 can’t do, mostly because I don’t want to change anything about that guitar, because it’s absolutely perfect the way it is. So to have a similar guitar in another beautiful colour, with a Bigsby and a Varitone switch (because I actually do like the sounds that you can get with a Varitone switch A LOT! - and indeed, some settings are less desirable than others)…, this almost seems like a no brainer. HOWEVER, this guitar isn’t cheap and the first thing I would want to do is to make sure that the Bigsby stays in tune as good as possible, which means that I would need to buy a good functioning roller bridge that fits (which is not always the case). I might even want to swap out the whole Bigsby thing for something a little more stable. The second thing I would want to do is to change the pickups for completely different pickups. This would either be a combination of a TV Jones Paul Yandell Duo-Tron in the bridge and a TV-Jones T-Armond in the neck position. You can get humbucker sized pickup rings to fit a regular sized Filterton, or something similar like the Duo-Tron. I’m not sure about the T-Armond though. Anyway, it would be either that or two great sounding P90’s (you can get humbucker sized pickup rings for P90’s as well, but they’re harder to find). I’m not sure about the nut on this guitar, but if it isn’t made of bone, I would want that to be replaced. I would also like locking tuners for no other reason but the fact that I find them convenient. I hate restringing a guitar with ‘normal’ tuners, with the exception of Fender style slotted tuners. And with these different pickups I have no idea what the effect of the Varitone will be (probably relatively similar). Add to this the fact that despite me not wanting to be a snob, I still find it slightly annoying that the headstock reads ‘Epiphone’ instead of Gibson. I hate myself for it, but I can’t help myself. Anyway, even if I man myself up and be cool with the brand name, it would still cost me a shitload of money to mod this guitar into something I would actually play with a big grin on my face. I know, ridiculous story. I have quite a few alternatives already. I don’t really need another guitar. I’ve got plenty of them. Thing is…, somewhere deep in my heart, I want to be that guy who has two good guitars and feel completely fine with it. For a while I had about 9 or 10 great electric guitars, but for various reasons there were only two that were still unbelievably good and stable: my ES-347 and a heavily modified Fender American Standard Telecaster. I never swap guitars during a gig, so one of them was always the backup for the other (I MUST have a backup for everything). Sometimes the 347 was my main guitar and sometimes the Tele was my main guitar. And I was perfectly happy! Then I bought another Telecaster and I built yet another, I got a fair number of my other guitars into a good working state and all of a sudden I felt lost. I had no idea what guitars to bring to the gig. I am physically disabled and I have to rely on others to carry my stuff for me. I can’t ask them to carry more than two guitars (and the rest). I felt so much more at ease when I could only use just these two guitars… Hence my interest for this guitar. For the two people that actually read this, I know what you want to ask. Yes, I could easily sell a bunch of guitars, buy a Gibson 335 and mod it precisely like I want it. And it did cross my mind so many times. But I just can’t do it. These guitars are all so precious to me. I already sold quite a few, but then I see a guitar I wanted for all my life. And there I go again. I’m sorry for the long story. I truly am. Guitar addict. 🤤
The purpose is that all tones are just different shades to "paint" with. I would use position 6 to get that "distant" feel for an opening to any song. Plus running into a Big Muff the different roll offs could give you many different flavors. IDK it really is a case by case application.
I’d love you guys to do a shootout of epiphone ES335’s. All the signatures & standard guitars etc. I’ve been considering getting one for a while but not sure now which. I was thinking of the Noel Gallagher one but there seems to be so many to choose from.
You guys should really dive into the Japanese music scene then. Expand your musical world, so to speak. The Japanese sometimes have a different tonal form than western music so the different tones for the switch location could very well serve a purpose specific to the Japanese sound. They're putting out great music and some of the best musicians in the world. A whole spectrum of sound and ideas, you'll find something you like I promise. And stuff you'll hate, to be fair, but that's music in general and not specific to Japan haha
@@ItsJustRyan89 I would be happy to suggest a couple of bands. Give me an example of what you like and we can go from there. My taste is all over the place lol
@@ItsJustRyan89 same. So let's start with a fun purely rock band called Bandmaid. 5 ladies whos songs put me in a good mood but a little stank face at the same time. Pretty cool looking thing, especially in Olive Drab (serious Cornell vibe - RIP), but Epiphone really need to give their collective heads a wobble with the pricing these days - it's meant to be a more affordable brand, who are these affordable for?!
The costs for production and parts and generally keeping the lights on has probably tripled or gone past that at this point compared to like 2 years ago. And thats no fault of Gibson, Epiphone or any company. They are using the same or even better parts than before. A lot of them have Gibson parts. They were not cheap before. Theres no way you can produce these kinds of guitars for well under 1000 these days. You wouldnt even have been able to really do that before Covid, Ukraine, Brexit etc
@@ItsJustRyan89 whats to laugh about that? Thats certainly something thats considerably increased prices in Britain. Especially of stuff that isnt made there
@metalpuppet5798 oh I get that's how the world is now, just saying it's not really affordable anymore for quite a lot of people who maybe 5-10 years ago would be looking at something like this maybe as a step up from a "beginner" instrument.

These look great. But I was so underwhelmed by the Dave Grohl model. Same scratchy frets and less refined fit and finish, now for $1300. There are sooo many better guitars out there for the money.
I own this guitar. Worth the penny. And I’m not trying to convince you to buy because I don’t want everyone having the same guitar I have. I’m very selfish. But there is no way to get all the features this guitar offers for a cheap price. It’s not a 335, it’s based off the 355.
How Many More Signature Guitars are Gibson & Epiphone Going to Bring Out ? Seems like it's 1 every 2 weeks .. ..Just so they can add another $1000 to a Basically Standard MODEL ? RIP OFF !
Guitar instrument in Japan way more interesting and fun. That's why we have Tim Henderson's Ibanez acoustic guitar. he was in Japan and saw those on store and the rest is history.
For those who a drawn to a 335 because of the hype…. Don’t believe it. Go try for yourself. I had a 335 and sold it after a year having only played for less than 10 hours. It’s not for everyone. I much prefer a casino.
They literally got Gibson parts on them now and pricing for parts has probably tripled in the last few years as has general cost for keeping the lights on at the factory etc. If you bought that Gibson any more than 2 years ago its totally incompareable
I got a gold bound Fender telecaster from Japan, a signature for some J-pop anime band I've never heard of. Its unreal. The name is nothing -- if the specs are right and it gives me funny feelings, I'm in.
£1229 for a presumably Chinese made epiphone?! Ouch. How are kids going to afford a decent first guitar these days? They're getting priced out of playing guitar.
Where its made says nothing about the quality or the parts these days. Its just the labour being cheaper. The parts are still expensive as hell since prices for them have only shot up in the last couple years. Tbh the parts are near what they are worth now. They were too cheap before. Thats why like 400£ guitars with similar parts could happen. But it was obvious that this couldnt last forever. Save up and spend a bit more and you are going to be happy. I dont see how there will ever be actually decent below 300-400£ anymore. Way more with these kinds of parts. Its just not doable anymore. You got to keep the lights on as well. Its not just the production costs that have probably tripled or are even past that point now.
Why? News flash for you, they've never stopped making those same affordable guitars. Why are you triggered by them trying to expand their customer base by offering something more for those who can afford it?
A lot of "opinion" - and nothing to back it up. If aren't able to formulate a single point, keep it to yourself. You make yourself look like an sad old fool with lots of complains but noone to talk to.

Diamond-shaped F-hole? Thanks Cap'n for cleaning that F-up
Is that better than a diamond-shaped a-hole? 🤣
Turned on the fuzz and it sounded like he turned on the varitone, but doesn’t like the veritone
... No Alvin Lee/ 10 years after?
😂 8:40 “what is the point” plays the perfect riff to exemplify the point.
Lee seems to have learnt something from Oz in the fuzz department 😂
Nice machine. All of them actually.
11:53 God why? What is happening?!
The guitar market is flooded. Would expect new guitar prices to a least stay level to compete with the used guitar market.
Shame there's no roller bridge
@FreeEngland1 save the strings sawing through saddles 🤔
Looks like a Bigsby B700, not a B70.
Guitar instrument in Japan way more interesting and fun. That's why we have Tim Henderson's Ibanez acoustic guitar. he was in Japan and saw those on store and the rest is history.
Does Pete speaks danish? I want to hear him xD
FUN FACT: The more Tequila you ingest the easier it is to say Shinichi Ubkata.
Writing it, though....
@@fritsvanzanten3573 don't drink and operate No. 2 pencils, you'll shoot your eye out kid.
Hell yeah, Lee is in to Doom 😂😂😂😂
More gain!
£1300 for an Epiphone, howay man crazy
first minute is crazy
What an accomplishment. Thanks for sharing. Now go do your homework.
Dude is one of my fav guitar players and these boomers say it sounds like Jane's addiction lmao
For those who a drawn to a 335 because of the hype…. Don’t believe it. Go try for yourself. I had a 335 and sold it after a year having only played for less than 10 hours. It’s not for everyone. I much prefer a casino.
If you want that position 6 sound just buy a Fender
£1200 and needs setting up - come on
I paid less for my Gibson 335. Epiphone pricing is out of control.
They literally got Gibson parts on them now and pricing for parts has probably tripled in the last few years as has general cost for keeping the lights on at the factory etc. If you bought that Gibson any more than 2 years ago its totally incompareable
@@metalpuppet5798 womp womp, keep licking boots and justifying chinese guitars
hi
Red one
There are holes in it!
I got a gold bound Fender telecaster from Japan, a signature for some J-pop anime band I've never heard of. Its unreal. The name is nothing -- if the specs are right and it gives me funny feelings, I'm in.
But they all weigh a ton.
You wouldn't expect that weight from a semi-hollow.
Ahhh another 1K+ guitar from the "budget brand"
The Bigsby looks absolutely ridiculous down there lolol
£1229 for a presumably Chinese made epiphone?! Ouch. How are kids going to afford a decent first guitar these days? They're getting priced out of playing guitar.
It’s a load of utter wank
Used market. Get a used epiphone dot for very cheap and it's the same thing
Easy…don’t buy a Chinese epiphone. Ibanez and Yamaha makes a great electric guitar for under $500
Where its made says nothing about the quality or the parts these days.
And I thought a 2nd Ibanez RGT1221 was expensive
My goodness. That fuzz is crap!
Too expensive for the headstock, regardless of how good it is. Save up and get the real deal.
The last gibson version I saw come up is $13,000... I take the epiphone thanks!
@@colhutchins eh? you can get a Gibson 335/345/355 for around 2-3k, all will wipe the floor with this thing.
Epiphone is a joke now- they were a good guitar for the money- now they're just Epiphone.
Why? News flash for you, they've never stopped making those same affordable guitars. Why are you triggered by them trying to expand their customer base by offering something more for those who can afford it?
@@BigMateo24 Why are you such a triggered fan boy? Get over it.
A lot of "opinion" - and nothing to back it up. If aren't able to formulate a single point, keep it to yourself. You make yourself look like an sad old fool with lots of complains but noone to talk to.
Who in the hell is Shinichi Ubukata? Is the goal now for manufacturers to give EVERYONE a custom model?
One of the biggest guitarists in Japan, playing lead for punk legends Ellegarden over 20 years ago, and fronting Nothing's Carved In Stone for like 15 years.
yes, all products should exist only catering to the saleenX02 little bubble. stay cool, bro.
Bought one - hated it. Well made, but heavy AF. Pickups are meh, and the variatone has 2 usable options Couldn’t wait to sell it. Nice thing about buying used … no money lost
more chinese guitars for 1000+ lmfao. prs se and guild os where is at for affordable guitars
news flash, iphones are made in china, PCs are made in china, hell, most of your stuff is made in china... there are good craftsmen and bad ones, doesn't matter if they're Chinese people in Epiphone or Apple or Mexicans in a US Fender factory ;)
Signature guitars are stupid
including Gibson Slash, BB king, Alex Lifson, Noel?
Lmao, Epiphone signature guitars are the most pathetic thing ever. It's truly sad that anyone gets duped into buying that trash.
Well it's just an Epiphone with unique features mixed together, nothing to be mad at really 😅
They literally have low end Gibson parts on them. They have only gone up in quality.
@FreeEngland1 seems like someone else is mad about shit 😅
hi trevor! unfortunately you are required to buy this product.
the varitone is for DIFFERENT SOUNDS!! Duh!!
