It is built amphitheatrically on a peninsula of Lake Orestiada, at an altitude of 703 m, between the mountains of Vitsi and Grammos.

The #population of the #city amounts to 16,909 inhabitants. It is surrounded by its homonymous #lake and is connected to the mainland through a wider strip of embankment land, giving the impression of an #island. In its long #history, a millennium and a half since its construction, it experienced #sieges and conquests by #Bulgarians, #Normans and #Turks, but to this day maintaining a significant number of #Byzantine #churches, #heritage and #mansions as #evidence of its prosperity, due to the successful #trade and trafficking of #furs in #centers in #Europe.
Regarding the #name of the city, the prevailing opinion is that it came from the #beavers that were endemic to it for centuries. The #Turkish name of the city is #Kesriye, a name also mentioned by the 17th century traveler Evliya #Celebi, while the #Serbian and #Bulgarian name of the city is Kostur (Cyrillic: #Костур).
In a neighboring area, according to the #Byzantine historian #Procopius, in his work On Buildings (553-555), the "Thessalian" city of Diocletianoupolis was located. #Diocletianoupolis has been identified by #archaeologists with an ancient city in the area of Armenochori which was recently discovered, 4 kilometers south of Kastoria. Kastoria was built on the site of the ancient city #Celetrum (Celetron), mentioned by the #Roman historian Titus Livius. The occupation of Kastoria by the Turks is placed around 1383. It remained in their possession for about five centuries. During the period of the Turkish occupation, the region of Kastoria emerged as a center of #Hellenism, preserving national consciousness, #language, #religion, #morals and customs. At this time, the region developed intense #economic and commercial activity and experienced a #boom in the #arts and letters. Georgios Kastoriotis or Georgios #Kastriotis, an eminent Kastorian who reached the office of grand commissar, founded his ecclesiastical school in 1705 in the #Mouzemviki district. Kastoria was liberated during the First Balkan #war, on November 11, 1912 and Saint #Minas is honored as the liberator of the city.
At a distance of 10 kilometers from the city of Kastoria, in #Argos #Orestiko, there is the State #Airport of Kastoria #Aristotelis, which connects Kastoria with #Kozani #Thessaloniki and #Athens.
Kastoria with its approximately 80 #churches is the only city in Greece that largely preserves the Byzantine and post-Byzantine #memory. With the exception of the #Holy #Mountain, only in Kastoria are there portable images of the #Cretan School and indeed of an early date. The churches, frescoes, portable icons and #mansions, are witnesses of economic prosperity and #civilization for almost 10 centuries or so. The construction of the churches of Kastoria, such as that of Agios Georgios (1085) by the emperor of Byzantium #Αλέξιο #Εμνηνος, was continued by the respective local aristocracy, such as e.g. the churches of Agioi Anargyri and Nikolaos Kasnitzis. The #monastery of #Mavriotissa of the 11th century is also frescoed on the exterior
Samples of the brilliant flourishing of #industrial and commercial activity of the inhabitants of Kastoria during the 18th century in particular. (1710-1726) and (1760 to the end of the century) are its numerous towering #mansions built for the living needs of its tenants. It was then that various international treaties were signed and peace and freedom of #communication prevailed in the Balkans and Europe.
Along with its lake, a widely known feature of the city is the activity of its residents for more than five hundred years in the art of #fur.
