To answer sam's question about shellshock, a theory that I have had as to why victims of shellshock is so different compared to the PTSD of today is because of technology and the 'desensitization' of how war itself works. Prior to WWI, many of the battles/wars would be conducted through lines of men practically taking turns shooting at each other. Though as guns became more accurate, more powerful and faster (as with the machine gun), the doctrines in which the armies used stayed the same and with it, the mentality. The drastic change of how warfare was played out, and the brutality and destruction that came along with it, was so incomprehensible at the time that it literally shattered the minds of soldiers. Not only that, many of the soldiers that enlisted were young (average being between 18-20) expecting a quick glorious war to bring them fame, only to be slapped in the face with the thunderous sounds of hell itself for four years (a great representation of this is the film "All Quite in the Western Front" which was covered by Wendigoon not that long ago). But yeah

    • @BuffiestFluff
      @BuffiestFluff 2 ปีที่แล้ว +27

You might be disregarding the commonly overlooked part about shell-shocked troops vs modern PTSD, and why shellshock was pretty limited in terms of when in history people got it.
Shell-shocked troops had large, violent explosions and impacts surrounding them for seemingly endless amounts of time. That alone would drive some people insane. Add on top of the fact that all these people heard and FELT in their bones, was explosions and gunfire so frequent and loud, that it drowned out everything else and was essentially a buzz. (Seriously look up what the front sounded like in ww1, the sound is unimaginable)
They also had the concussive blasts, over and over and over, causing actual physical damage to their brains. That's the part most people don't consider.

It was mostly the extreme use of artillery and chemical warfare in the 1st world war and the absolute personal brutality the armies were inflicting on each other in the 2nd world war which carried on into the cold war proxy wars. The shit that the Japanese did to the Chinese and American POWs is sickening, the same with the Soviets and the Germans treating each other like literal cockroaches, honor no longer existed after the first world war.

Not-so-fun-fact, part of the reason why people from WWI came back looking like absolute psychos is partially because of literal shell shock. The amount of artillery shelling that solders had to endure legitimately would cause brain damage from shaking their brains in their skull.
Shell Shock also was just the phrasing of PTSD at the time.

Chad Toni. Based psychologist, based cosmologist, smokes weed once, grows beard, returns to forehead fables, and bullies every single viewer with based psychoanalysis through the screen. Next time I hope Don Toni has developed a habit to wear an eye patch not from injury but for psychological advantages to manipulate us into thinking we're gay, smokes a cigar, a cigarette and a pipe all at once, rips a line of coke off the needle of heroin in his veins and rises to a God like amount of power to convince poob to become a religious extremist and Bryan finally gets the confidence to continue to heal over the trauma with the whole tavern door lockpicking desperation. To answer the shell shock question; words cannot adequately describe the horrors of World War I. No one knew just how bad it was going to be, people thought it would be a quick in and out, kick some ass, redraw some borders, smash and grab, group photos, the usual. As you all know, that was not the case. When people started to get sent home because they were rendered paralyzed by fear and trauma, the governments could not acknowledge the fact that the mere act of fighting in this war was enough to reduce men to such a pitiful state, because that would cause people to question if this whole war was worth waging, if this was the price to pay. So, society (by which I refer to the British, because they were the focus of my studies in my courses) chose to blame and slander the individual’s character if they would show signs of their trauma, or be accused of being anti-war (which was considered borderline treasonous in an era where so many countries were taking a “total war” approach to waging the Great War). Many people returned broken and were ridiculed for their cowardice if they showed any cracks, forcing a generation of men to repress their trauma and agony which as you can imagine, had a significant effect on the generations to follow.
As for the photos Sam’s referring to, WWI was a time where if you didn’t watch your step, you’d trip over some irregularity in the ground and land face-first, mouth open into the blown-open abdomen of your best friend who you’ve known since childhood. That happened more often than you’d hope, that bits and pieces of people would end up in the mouths of mortified onlookers. WWI was a time where you’d cling to the earth like a baby lemur clings to its mother, making yourself as flat as possible to avoid the suppressing fire of machine guns, all the while mortars from both the enemy and your side rain around you, and in the deafening cacophony of madness, everyone who peeks to see if there’s an opportunity to escape is picked off, so you have to lie there in the mud for hours, maybe even a whole day, like a worm, and at any instant, through variables completely beyond your control, you can have a mortar shell land on or around you and you’d turn into muddy chunks. I could go on, but at this point I would hope the horrors of WWI are self-evident. No war since has been as horrifically brutal in its waging, and we can only hope and pray that future wars aren’t as horrific as the Great War.
So to summarize, WWI was the most brutal war, and there was a complete lack of support to help veterans cope with they horrors they had witnessed, in fact, society shamed and gaslit these poor men into repressing their feelings for the war’s propagation, so within the minds of the shell-shocked there was a war of their own being waged, a negative feedback loop where they had to convince themselves that trauma was cowardice, and cowardice is for pacifists, and by god, they’d seen and done enough that they could never be labeled as pacifists (being a pacifist labeled you a pariah and in many cases could lead to your arrest because it was counter-productive to the war effort). Remember kids: there’s no glory to be found in war.
If for whatever reason you want more, read All Quiet on the Western Front, or if you want to see how those suffering from shell shock fared, give Regeneration a read.

The reason veterans today don't have the PTSD of people in WWI is because war has changed a lot since then, imagine being bombed in a foxhole for 5 days straight, literally non stop

Interesting fact about Welsh and the sheep meme, back in the day you would be put to death if you were found stealing a sheep, but the consequence for having sex with one was the definitely not death so many stories of them opting to rather be seen as one who sexes up a sheep then to be put to death.

I could watch the those three go on an inquinsitive tangent, questioning the world around them and ask Dontoni why that is, for hours. Getting a licensed therapist on your podcast and asking him "why come my farts are getting louder?" will always kill me with laughter 42:20

Modern and past PTSD are the same. It’s the severity. Combat in world war 1 and 2 are entirely different than today. Most engagements today are distant and more common to be disconnected. Those men were looking into the eyes of the people they killed a lot of the time. The carnage was just different.
Edit: Smooth way of saying you have a massive shlong stalt

She’ll shock was such a big deal because of how much of a shock seeing any of that was to begin with. None of those people ever experienced war that bad nor had most or their family before them. Also ww1 was insanely brutal with war crimes and chemical shit

When Sam was talking about his million friends I got huge Norm McDonald vibes, like in his mannerisms and the way he even talked, more than normal because we all know Sam loosely based his persona after Norm

I used to work in the recycling industry. Yes, your recycling just goes into the trash. Household recycling is too dirty to be useful in most cases. I'm sure that's not the case everywhere.. but my city.. (a city with a population of 6 million about 6 hours north of a city in Florida that starts with a T) almost every pound of residential recycling gets elaborately relocated until it eventually gets scattered in regional landfills or shipped overseas.
