  • Panna Tiger Reserve, located in the Panna and Chhatarpur districts of Madhya Pradesh, is a testament to the conservation success stories of India. Spanning an area of approximately 543 square kilometers, the reserve forms part of the Vindhyan mountain range and is characterized by its rugged terrain, deep gorges, and lush plateaus. Declared a tiger reserve in 1994, it is one of the 53 reserves under Project Tiger.
The reserve is home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna. It boasts dry deciduous forests dominated by teak, sal, and bamboo, providing a thriving habitat for species such as leopards, sloth bears, Indian wolves, and gharials. Avian enthusiasts can spot over 200 bird species, including the endangered Indian vulture.
Panna is especially celebrated for its tiger reintroduction program. By 2009, it had lost its tiger population to poaching, but concerted efforts involving translocation and monitoring have successfully restored a healthy population.
The Ken River flows through the reserve, adding to its scenic beauty and biodiversity. Tourists can enjoy jeep safaris and boat rides while exploring this wilderness. Panna’s proximity to the Khajuraho temples enhances its appeal, offering visitors a blend of nature and heritage.
