Makes me sick if there was not the corruption in Africa they would have helped feed their own people , but instead blame the people that helped save lives
Bob Geldof's made a fortune on the back of Band Aid/Live Aid (at the time his last singles had bombed and he was being dropped by his label). His TV company was set up in 1997-after his knighthood for Band Aid, when he had unchallengeable power and influence, and many powerful friends. He's now worth $150 million lol! Often charging 50-100k just to speak at conferences (see Diversity at Work, Melbourne for details) and his tax avoidance and profiteering in Africa is off the scale (see the Mauritius leaks-which he refuses to comment on). Too many friends around in the media to stop a proper investigation into his finances.
Band Aid was an absolute, one off, amazing phenomenon. 40 yrs ago it was highly relevant. Lets stop re releasing the same song. Let the younger generation make their own music. And if Africa do not want charity then lets give closer to our own back yards. That is what I do.
I am helping people in my own country uk puting them first. I dont think Band aid or live aid is relevant anymore. Theres lost of other charities out there that support a similar cause oxfam who i can not stand.
I don't think anyone is really criticising his work in 1984. The world was different. But these shabby re-releases stink of someone trying to keep themselves relevant. I lost any respect for Geldof when he was questioned on his tax affairs. He responded by suggesting that he had given up his free time, which was in effect a tax. Absolute bollocks. By that logic, every scout leader, football coach, church warden and charity shop worker should get a lucrative tax break. But they don't...they do these things for the love of it, and don't try to suggest it exempts them from paying their dues.
Lorraine Kelly engaged in a thoughtful discussion with Bob regarding this issue, highlighting the differences in societal norms and perspectives at the time of its production (40 years ago). Everyone entitled to their opinion.
It's great to be given a lesson by the Ethiopian minister,on why you don't need a knees up anymore, because you find it condescending, and irrelevant, in today's society, and that's fine, that's okay if everything's okay down your neck of the woods now, we can now concentrate, on feeding our own, then broadcasters, can stop ramming down adverts ,requesting donations of money ,for those who are suffering, and struggling, down your way,it's no longer irrelevant, to be showing compassion and concern for people's, who we fought were less fortunate, then me and you.
Total nonsense . Why, do people always look for a negative . Strange, they don't want to blame some of the leaders they have in some of the countries . It saved lives , end of .
Well said. It is nonsense. It's a song, which was/is sold to make money for the people in need. Simple as that. We need to stop being so woke about every little thing. Ed Sheeran & Co. can have their say, but I don't agree with them. To be honest, if one feels the same way as Ed & Co, don't buy it. I for one will, and have bought it in the past, and will keep buying it, for the sake of doing my bit.
Don't we still give to India but they seem to be able to send rockets to space? We don't have a space program... If I'm wrong please correct me if I'm wrong.
Jeremy Saying if you can’t listen you can’t speak, is a bit unfair if the person is already speaking and you want to speak over the caller. And then saying 60 seconds later to your co host, it’s good to listen (which you didn’t) 🤷🏻♂️
It’s sad that something that started out being just a kind thing to do to help others has been so criticized. The world was a different place in 1984! No one had done this on such a large scale and these artists were showing charity can be done by all. In any small way. It is sad it brought any negative attention while all intentions were to be positive. I was 13 in 1984 and this song and all of these artists brought so much joy and happiness to us. These people were our heroes! It’s was an incredible time!! There was NO SOCIAL MEDIA!!! This was how things got done! It’s unfortunate it went slightly wrong but geez! Give the criticism a rest!!
Jeremy Vine - You need to pay heed to Queen playing Sun City prior to to Live Aid, something that most of the public I'm sure aren't aware of. I was 20 in 1985 (same age as you I believe) and remember the sour taste it left.
@darrenlewis5403 Sun city was a mixed race venue and besides let's not forget the white south Africans were quick to point out in the 1980's that if there was majority black rule the country would go to hell and that's exactly what's happened under the ANC misrule ......and Zaire.......and Mozambique......and Uganda......and Kenya !
Well done to Steven Van Zandt and his Artists Against Apartheid movement exposing white South African privilege in relation to the arts whilst black South Africans languished in ghettos. Queen ignored and tried later to hide behind a guise of being 'apolitical'.....I believe they regretted playing at the time but then of course, the damage had been done.
Ok instead of giving the money to Africa, keep it here and give it to the vulnerable British people, like pensioners too scared to turn their heating on. Also, put a ban on the adverts we are faced with of emaciated African kids, with diseases, going blind etc, if they don’t want the money then we shouldn’t have to have those horrific images in our heads. Band aid was created with good intentions and sorry, this just seems extremely ungrateful and ungracious to me!
That fuse bloke will be asking Bob and midge for reparations now as payment for loss of African earnings... 🙄 I'm more than happy for the African charities to pay the people of the UK back it's charitable donations if we offended them so we can donate it to our food banks... 👍
That's so cynical, we're you even around at the time! I was in my early twenties in 1985 and respected and looked up to these famous Musicians for doing this .
As did many of my peers. The eighties were all.about : " Me Me Me" as purported by Thatcher, this presented a very less selfish perspective as it to how a person can choose to live their lives : I E : work together as a community to shape change: good change, be kind etc, it was inspiring for young people who were living In a very money orientated dog eat dog Britain at the time.
African country tries are charged high interest because they are high risk and lots of investors have been badly burned... nothing to do with stereotypes.
I’ve been so disappointed with the tone and rhetoric in the last couple of weeks about this 40 year old charity and cause. . And REALLY disappointed in Ed Sheeran denigrating this epic, life saving project that changed the modern face of charity and charity abroad. Because of this, billions of lives have been affected positively and saved. What this is potentially making the world think is “oh I’d better not try and help others in other countries for fear of patronising them and causing offence. Ed Sheeran should be so deeply ashamed of himself. He is harming charitable work in counties who need it. And lastly, the whole live aid wasn’t to patronise or suggest Africa as a continent is a monolith . It was to empower and give funds to countries who needed it and programs in place to sustain themselves in the long term. Programs to build long term solutions, completely independently. And also ti encourage the world to try and reduce stigma and injustice. It wasn’t to blanketly say every country in Africa is the same with a patronising lense. Without them millions of people wouldn’t have survived. Hear that Sheeran. Those who came before you are older and a touch wiser and smarter. He comes across as a thoroughly decent and nice bloke..but he got this so wrong.
Lool!!! There is joy, snow and believe it or not, there is money in many parts of Africa. This song perpetuates negative stereotypes that are not helpful to the image of Africa, neither does it enrich the pride of Africans. It is great to give, but how it’s done greatly matters.
Well, since you’re asking….what I am saying is that a good cause can’t give money with one hand, and take pride and esteem with another. There a nuances to these things.
It’s sad that something that started out being just a kind thing to do to help others has been so criticized. The world was a different place in 1984! No one had done this on such a large scale and these artists were showing charity can be done by all. In any small way. As for Ed Shereen, hes a Billinaire probably by now, so if he objects to the Somatics around this new Live Aid recording, why dont you donate some of your Millions to people in Africa Ed who experience extreme poverty and hunger everyday now? 😮 To the viewer who called in saying charity starts at home, yes ordinary British people are struggling financially atvthe moment, but they were in 1985 due to Maggie Thatcher and her Tory goverment, it was harder then than it is today for most british people financially, but millions still poured in then for The first Band Aid record intiative in 1985 , and the feel good factor of the record lifted everyone then in the Country in the dark days of the Tory Ministry, and god was it dark!
I heard Africa is making a song for UK pensioners. It's called warm aid!
Makes me sick if there was not the corruption in Africa they would have helped feed their own people , but instead blame the people that helped save lives
What would happen in Africa if all charities stopped working in Africa, and all aid stopped too .
Their leaders would have to move to smaller palaces
Not all African’s need aid, they just need a fairer deal when it comes to economics, resources, debt etc.
Yes sheeran we all decline your vocals

If you question him he gets all aggy
@@HazelMott-l1c I wonder why!
But its made more for the good FACT
Ungrateful lot aren't they? Give them billions in aid and they're still complaining. Don't donate a penny to that lot.
Stop giving the ungrateful girl billions then. Spend it on Britain 🇬🇧
I love band aid and live aid growing up in all this and we just loved to help and come together.
They don't need the money now

Midge Ure was screwed over by Geldof,Ure did a lot of work and is hardly ever mentioned in his contribution…

A African friend of mine who was a child in Nigerian at the time thought they were gonna be rich bandaid made no difference too the ordinary people
Band aid wasn’t for Nigeria, it was for Ethiopia which had famine at the time. Moreover, Nigeria was quite wealthy with oil money.

Too much music. Too many songs. Just go home make your own songs and only release them if they're beautiful genius pieces of music art.
There is no such thing as too much music.
