Two boys promised to stay by each other's side. Both utterly failed in their own way to keep that promise.
One boy, desperate to stay equal to the world's defender, distanced himself from his friend in search of power. The resulting emptiness was filled with obsession and ambition enough for him to lose sight of his promise. "Becoming equal to the world's defender" was twisted into "becoming THE world-defender" as he came to mistake solitude for power.
The other boy devoted so much attention to his job that he failed to notice the growing distance between himself and his friend, creating a shadow inside his heart that he only noticed moments before he was struck down. It was his pupil's light that gave him the chance to stick around long enough to reconnect one last time.
Only at the end of his life, when there was no future left for him, could Xehanort be made to look back through his dark past and find that one bright moment when he actually conceded defeat for once.

Actually I think that's what the Next Game before KH4 will be about! The Story of Eraqus & Xehanort as the Main Characters! The Epilogue seems to Hint at this.

This chess game completely mirrored what happened in kindom hearts games, included the illegal move from Eraqus, which resembles the forbidden path of time that Sora took to change the future of the Keyblade battle.
Now bear with me, if you look at 5:59 and 6:03, all the *black* pieces have a symbol on the top of each one.
A unicorn (Ira), a snake (Invi), a fox (Ava), a bear (Aced), a leopard (Gula), a goat (symbol found on the keyblade "No name", MoM's keyblade) and a heart (the exact symbol is engraved on the box handed to Luxu).
As a white piece, instead, we see Eraqus putting Sora's piece. This means we might see a showdown between Sora and the foretellers?

I think the Next spinoff before KH4 will be about Xehanort & Eraqus. The Opening scene should be the Final scene from the Epilogue & the Epilogue from that Game would Continue from where the KH3 Epilogue left off where Luxu was telling his friends about a Long Story.

So, we all know that the next game will be something like 13 Lights Vs 7 Darknesses. But what if, at the end of KH4, the warriors of light form their own Organisation 13 to protect the worlds? Let's list who we've got, and to make it more fun, I'm gonna do what 358 days did and give each character a description and title:
1 - Travels worlds seeking adventure and excitement, King of Kingdom Hearts: Sora
2 - Fights for her beloved, inspires light into others, The Princess of Heart: Kairi
3 - Born of nothing and forges his own fate, The Key of Destiny: Roxas
4 - Controls the darkness, and gives everything for those he cares about, The Dark Knight of the Light: Riku
5 - Once controlled, now free to make her own choices, The Puppet who cut her strings: Xion
6 - Born from pure light, a past he does not remember, The Warrior Birthed by Sleep: Ventus
7 - Wields light and yields the darkness, seeks atonement, The Lingering Will: Terra

We are missing 4, and no, I'm not including Mickey because he doesn't have the time to be a part of the Organisation, but, remember that one cutscene where Xemnas tells Demyx, Luxord, Marluxia, and Larxene that they have an ancient Keyblade legacy? Well:
10 - Laid back, but deadly, wields a Keyblade born from water, The Water Dancer: Demyx
11 - A Keyblade that manipulates time and gambles every battle, The Wager of Victory: Luxord
12 - Deadly skills hidden by roses, a Keyblade and scythe in hand, The Rose of Terror: Marluxia

Well would you look at that, 13 warriors, I really hope this is the direction they go in, I don't Square to do something stupid and give Namine or Isa a Keyblade, I'd like another Prequel game exploring Demyx and Luxords origins. But that's my theory.

If Dark Road were to turn into a console Remake game, or as a feature length movie, then I can imagine Benjamin Diskin and Drake Bell being the main lead roles and knock it out of the park with their on voice dynamic friendship like showing off Young Xehanort's caring side and Young Eraqus's fun, carefree side.

A game is no fun if you know what it is going. I believe this is a main staple and motivation behind the mind of Kingdom Hearts.
Its a really nice moment seeing these cutscenes, but its kind of weird when you think about it. If this is in the past (i still think this is the afterlife), they basically played the whole KH story. Not once did Xehanort found strange that everything was going according to the game he played against Eraqus?

They didn’t get Josh as Young Xehanort but they did get the guy who gives Josh his game sphere, so it’s close enough
I think the chess game pieces are simply used for a clever narrative of the story, what events are about to unfold instead of a significance of the story. The "New game" hinted at the very end will be our next game in the series, possibly another long bridge to Kh4. The pieces signify the foretellers and the rest of the epilogue. This is just my theory.

I really hope that if you buy this 700 dollar chess board it comes with a rule book that includes the 7 chess piece summon and people really get to feel like they're also xehanort.

I think Xehanort thought his existence meant nothing despite him knowing his destiny was to (try) and acquire the x blade and open kingdom hearts at the time, like he was following along with the path before him, but didn't feel it in him.
Somehow I feel like he knew he was a pawn in destinies plan
That's why after it all ended, he was finally able to let go and be with his friend Eraqus and be himself again.
Deep down from those memories of him playing chess with Eraqus, he really was a good person.
He knew more than he was letting on and went with it, but that doesn't mean it didn't hurt him from all the pain he caused others just following their heart.
He probably knew he was hurting but still thought it was the right thing to do in his mind and that's probably just what the prophecy was expecting.
Maybe that's why I wanna cosplay young Xehanort

I don't get how xehanort ended up on the destiny islands years after this, he was complaining in a cut scene it was too small as if he couldn't leave
He left the islands, trained here, then visited the islands again to meet Ansem in search of power.
@DVJFan He met Ansem twice. The first time Ansem simply helped him escape the islands, as mentioned in one of KH3's reports. It was obviously the second time, when he was a bit older, that he was sent off on his little time trip.
Or Young Xehanort simply preferred to wield the Keyblade he was destined to hold in his future.
Xehanort leaves islands with Ansem’s help => Xehanort trains as a Keyblade wielder alongside Eraqus => Xehanort wanders in search of further power=> Xehanort meets Ansem again and does the whole time travel bit => Xehanort gets to wield his future self’s Keyblade => Xehanort returns to the time he left and forgets the future => Xehanort spends the next decades obsessing over Kingdom Hearts and the X-blade.
I’m not seeing any problem at all with this timeline.
@DVJFan "Where it started" could easily mean specifically the time travel bit. The "world that is too small" could easily be referring to not just Destiny Islands, but the greater World in which he sought power. And one should note that he said to Sora "At this time, I STILL had no idea that I was talking to myself". "STILL" being the keyword to notice the implications of. It's obvious now with the scenes shown in this very video that the DDD flashback took place AFTER he first left, not DURING as we all assumed. By "outside world" as he mentioned as Sora fell into sleep, he was no longer just referring to the World outside the Destiny Islands, but the New World beyond the Keyblade War his present self was seeking.
Yes, Xehanort obviously couldn't use the Keyblade before he first left the islands... And? How does that "put a dent" in the notion that he gained that power AFTER that? Oh right, because of the notion that he time-traveled before he left the islands, which has now been firmly indicated to be a false notion.
In any case, if you can't accept the obvious clarification that the DDD flashback was a SECOND meeting with Ansem, not the first, that's your problem. But please, feel free to call me an idiot again. It gives SO much more weight to your words.

The chess match between Eraqus and Xenahort was written by a creator who knows how to write with symbolism, while the creators of RWBY have no idea what they are doing.

Edbert Agathon It’s possible. I mean 5:59 shows the Foretellers and two other pieces which I believe are Luxu and the Master of Masters. It pretty much tells us that they are the 7 darknesses. As for the 13 lights, our only clue is the Kingdom Hearts 3 boxart.
Porbably 7 darkness and just 1 light, meaning Sora vs the five Foretellers + Luxu + the Master of Masters.

My assumption is that Eraqus and Xenahort are representative (or literally are) the forces of light and darkness that we learn about in UX. They are doomed to fight forever and now have turned it into a game.
I can’t help but picture Drake Bell when I hear Eraqus.
With the controversy surrounding Drake Bell (the voice of young Eraqus), do you think they might redub this scene with Eraqus having a different voice actor. I’m only saying that mainly because of that one scene in one of the episodes of Gravity Falls.

Xehanort doesn't seem to have yellow/orange eyes in the beginning of the Kingdom Hearts 3, I've noticed.
Probably because that was before he succumbed to darkness.
Notice how the heartless have yellow eyes, and guess who else also has yellow eyes besides those two.
I think there is a far more sinister game at play here that the Master of Masters was aware of, and it has something to do with what that black box.
