He took the position of healer in the party because nobody else was suited for it. his main responsibility within the party was to heal even though he did a lot of other things. Healer is just the name of position like there’s a tank, damage dealer and vanguard

The MC actually said he switched to healer because no one else in the team was suited for that position. When your reading/watching a story you kind of have to go with the writers vocabulary or you’ll have a tough time

It not really true that a Jack of all trades “don’t succeed at any of them”. It means that the ability of all the trade is not that deep, ie they are not a master, hence a “Jack”. The old term for someone that has just a level of ability beyond apprentice.
Jack = Journeyman (competent at the trade but has not done a masterwork). Later on there was a more complimentary term for Jack of All Trades. It was 'Renaissance Man'

The belief was essentially that people should pursue all knowledge and develop their abilities as far as they possibly could. There's definitely some nuance between that ideal and someone who happens to know a little bit about a lot of things due to experience and dabbling.
