He was beset (attack) by the opponent but he managed to escape. His behave was like a botched (awkward) person no body liked him. He evinced (revealed) the truth but that was harmful for himself personally. He gave the examination as an entrant( beginner) but he surprised everyone he got through the exam. His glance to the thief was unfathomable (inscrutable) so could not see him properly.
