All I can say is 'Wow!' I have heard these two Dupre pieces often and I don't think I've heard them played at such a breakneck tempo, probably faster than I would imagine Dupre himself playing. I generally prefer hearing pieces like this in settings such as this played in a slower tempt to hear all the nuances of the music, but Vincent Dubois makes this work tremendously. The registrations and execution were spot on. The placement of the microphones was also excellent. Bravo!

@@f1gwr I agree. Mixing can do a lot and it absolutely is overlooked. That said, if the original sound that's captured isn't high quality, there is only so much that mixing can do to fix that. Good luck.
@@dkod19 Definitely agree: garbage in, garbage out! Major disc companies often hire sound engineers that didn't have extensive thoughts about their practice: they simply use techniques they have been educated to. By mentors that neither had any reflection beforehand about the involved acoustic phenomenons (e.g. one example: phase distortion). Now about mixing are two additional caveats: they use too much of these must-have "plug-ins", yielding signal quality damage, and if they produce by chance good results, the mastering guy often makes it all wrong after that. BTW my opinion is that in classical music the mastering position should be simply suppressed. And should be kept for only two purposes: commercial radios where you *have* to be louder than the neighbour, and vinyl LP's where amplitude dynamics is limited. Nowadays with (quality) digital sound you may obtain 40-50 dBs dynamic without any problem. And keep them to render the musical emotion.

Thank you so much for your appreciation, which is our only reward. Especially because logistics was such a pain. Car access and parking for equipment moving in the historical center of Strasbourg is tremendously restricted. After (and before) that when you're on the spot you must face many restrictions inside this historical monument... Later, comes the sound editing between rehearsal and concert itself: five edit points for around fifteen attempts, each taking two and a half hours, in order to obtain an (almost) inaudible connection. With tempi that are not strictly the same. So you have to change the sound tempo without modifying the tone height; or slightly slow down the video to keep everything in sync. In total: in excess four weeks full time work for 55 minutes final material and 1.51 TB space on the workstation disk (after deleting temporary and unused files!). My advice to you if you use Audacity and need to edit successive recordings: display not only the waveform but also the spectrum (hidden under the green triangle pointing downwards: while you clic on the file name select the option Multi-vue if your app is localized in French - but you speak French in Geneva don't you?). There all edit point clicks become visible and your challenge will be to minimize their high frequency contents with sample level editing, not only the amplitude jump, but also the spectrum jump. Unfortunately the sweet point is almost unpredictable, so you have to go through lengthly trial and error sequences. Good luck if you have to edit the files. The best being to capture a full performance without any issue for the organist. You may also read the response to the comment of @Msguillemin, as in Strasbourg's Cathedral, the organ pipes are located laterally, which adds a difficulty for stereo balance and sweet recording point. Agree upon your artist's appreciation: he has something in the order of soul and sensibility that outdo other organists... Scoop: another V. Vincent joue tout d'une perfection totale il est à la limite du génie car tout est maîtrisé et en équilibre c'est vraiment de la très grande musique car l'équilibre ici fait qu'il est en déséquilibre ailleurs il est dans une maîtrise totale il ne m'enfonce pas les touches il les caresses c'est quasiment presque parfait ça lui donne une force d'expression ce prélude fugue absolument génial lier à la Bible par la Genèse fait de cette interprétation du très grand art bravo à Vincent Dubois un organiste hors pair un gros poids lourd de Notre-Dame de Paris maintenant et je serai heureux de l'accueillir à Saint-Étienne de Caen sur le cavalier colle Philippe Dubois de Caen très admirative de cette façon de jouer car il me rappelle Jimmy Grimbergen que j'ai rencontré chez Michel Chapuis en 1982 et ce dernier voyez du génie dans son interprétation du Mi mineur comme ceci car la Vincent Dubois ne le joue pas trop vite toutes les voix sont maîtrisées les entrées les sorties des voix bravo à Vincent Dubois
Une maitrise absolue de la la 548 de JS Bach ! une Fluidité parfaite, une magnifique retenue des passages "suspendus" dans la fantaisie ( ce qui lui donne toute sa dimension) et contre-point marqué , dynamique dans la fugue , le tout en fait une GRANDE interprétation magistrale, sur une pièce de grande difficulté ( de la part de Bach, c'est presque un pléonasme !). le seul bémol reste la prise de son et le travail des techniciens du son les les anches de grandes tailles aurait tendances à dominer , un peu trop par certain moment ... mais cela, n'engage que moi ... et de plus je n'ai pu faire partie de personnes à cet "honorable instant de musicologie". Merci M Dubois !
Monsieur Guinier, la prise de son est un art qui peut être discuté et qui doit s'améliorer, c'est en tous cas comme ça que je fonctionne. Je suis ouvert à toutes les idées concrètes, réfléchies et argumentées, et vous prie par conséquent de nous faire profiter de votre expertise... Les anches de grande taille sont trop présentes ? Adressez-vous au facteur d'orgue, pas aux preneurs de son qui utilisent des micros Schoeps cardio infra et Neumann numériques, qui retranscrivent fidèlement ces anches, et dont le positionnement a été optimisé en fonction du lieu. Pour ce qui est du mixage, c'est un parti pris de le faire "minimaliste", sans addition d'effets et de filtres qui détériorent immanquablement la transparence et ajoutent de la distorsion, en particulier de phase. Pour répondre à votre question, ils étaient quatre (deux Neumann numériques et deux Schoeps, condensateurs petite membrane), placés face à l'instrument, à la limite sud de la nef centrale, au bord nord des arches, sur un trépied à 7 mètres du sol. Auditivement ce n'était pas l'endroit optimal qui était plus situé aux environs du transept, côté sud (à l'opposé de la chaire). Malheureusement la captation et le rendu stéréo auraient été moins bons. C'est pourquoi, de la position choisie par François, il a fallu rajouter 2 dB de graves pour rétablir l'équilibre tonal. La perspective également a été particulièrement soignée, mais ça chut, c'est un petit secret de fabrique. Christian, mixeur et réalisateur pour la radio Accent 4.

Hang on a moment....did they tune this organ up a semi-tone in recent years? Technically this piece in this video- The Wedge- the pitch is closer to F than E- up a semi-tone. When Diane bish played this amongst others This Strasbourg Cathedral organ was always tuned to A-440.....
Many instruments in that region of Western Europe are voiced that way. Zwolle is a prime example. I am not fond of mean tone which is another example of tonal alteration.

enfin, les organistes osent jouer la 548, cette magnifique oeuvre de BACH tant délaissée ces dernières décennies, oh oui; il fût une époque ou à part quelques prof de conservatoires, qui terrorisaient littéralement leurs élèves, en les obligeants non seulement à l' apprendre par cœur mais aussi d'être capable aussi de la jouer dans les 12 demies tons transposés .... et oui exercice "vicelard" mais tellement éducatif... essayez ! après c'être arraché jusqu'au dernier cheveux, vous être prêt pour le grd concourt international de Chartres...! Bref c'est excellent ...! Cette pièce est tellement belle, riche et sombre à la fois mais sans oublier sa difficultés d'exécution car elle est truffée de pièges rythmiques et harmoniques; ce qui en fait d'ailleurs sa splendeur! D'ou la difficulté supplémentaire à son apprentissage ... Enfin un grand merci pour le ravissement de nos oreilles merci encore. C G

Comment peut-on parler de profondeur dans des œuvres qui n’en ont pas ? A la rigueur dans le fa mineur op7, mais il n’est pas joué sur cette vidéo. En revanche on constate qu’il y a de la profondeur et de l’inspiration au plus haut point dans les 6 œuvres de Schumann, si rarement jouées bien que sublimes.
Il y a d’autres virtuoses de l’orgue, mais une aisance pareille est vraiment exceptionnelle et produit une écoute très expressive ❤

51:00 la fugue du prélude et fugue en sol mineur de Marcel Dupré ! Une des plus belles et des plus enjouées de l'histoire de la musique !
