Reggie Whites 21 sacks in 1987 was in a 12 game strike shortened season. Jerry Rice had 22 touchdowns that same year. Wonder what would have been if they played a full 16 games.

Agree, though can't help but feel that everything related to the 87 season has been tainted by the strike, the replacement players, and the fact that some teams like the defending Super Bowl Champion Giants just mailed it in and called it a day, while others like Washington and San Francisco were better prepared.

@@jrb37300 @jrb37300 This seems to be exactly what was going on. Here's an article from 1987 that partly describes why the numbers were inflated for the 49ers:
Oct. 8: Eleven 49ers, including Joe Montana, Dwight Clark, Roger Craig and Dwaine Board, went back to work yesterday in the biggest breach of the 17-day old NFL strike. Although the remaining 47 striking 49ers refrained from criticizing the players who broke ranks, the reaction from the NFL Players Association was swift and hostile. "There are some hard feelings and resentment," said 49er co-player representative Keith Fahnhorst, "but nothing that won't be overcome once the strike is over."
An NFLPA official who did not want to be identified wasn't so conciliatory toward the strikebreakers. "They've done themselves more harm than they've done to the strike," the official said. "These guys are going to be known as scabs. They are scabs. They've chosen their selfishness over the respect of 1,500 guys on strike. They're going to have to live with that decision for the rest of their lives." Montana, like most of the other strikebreakers, refused to talk to reporters. Instead, he issued a statement through his Boston-based attorney, Bob Woolf, that he decided to report only after several other players committed themselves to going back to work.

Hostetler's mobility provided a crucial component to the Giants' offense going into the playoffs. His scrambling provided additional play calling options making them less predictable. Under pressure, Hostetler's footwork enabled him to avoid sacks and make solid passes outside the pocket.

It's ironic, that in 1986, 1990, 2007, 2011 The NY Giants played the team they'd eventually beat in the Superbowl. I have each game. The '90 Giants were underdogs in the postseason after losing QB Simms and RB Rodney Hampton; who even WITH these guys; they lost at home to the juggernaut 90 Bills. Who just seemed to get better.

Those Bills teams, especially in 1990, were so good. Almost like the Colts of the mid 2000s. Both had great, hall of fame quarterbacks, ran the no huddle, could run the ball effectively, great pass rushers, excellent coaches, etc. They absolutely pummeled my Steelers in the 92 divisional playoffs, and was just depressed watching the difference between their football team and mine..

Giants fan and I remember watching this game on a Saturday afternoon. Giants were getting spanked. Couldn't stop the bills offense. This was an extremely fun game. As a Bills fan I wish this was the result in the SB. I sometimes wonder if the Bills might've won if they didn't play the Giants that year. At least that way they wouldn't have had the game tape against Buffalo to look at and make adjustments on.
Oh well, Parcells is one of my favorite coaches ever so I guess that's the one silver lining.

    • @pomerlain8924

If the Bills big talk defense could have simply made stops on third downs, the adjustments the Giants made wouldn't have mattered. The Giants second TD in the third quarter doesn't happen if the Bills could have just made a tackle to stop Mark Ingram on the 3rd and 13 play.

3-Peat ~ meaning they had won the previous 2 Super Bowls
the 49ERS were the better team and beat themselves with the costly turnover and poor coaching..that's the way it is...safe to say it's why no team in NFL History has won 3 straight Super Bowls.

I love that we're here debating a game that happened 29 years ago, lol. But let me just say this, the Giants didn't win because of luck and the 49ers didn't beat themselves. Roger Craig didn't fumble the ball on his own, Erik Howard knocked it out and Lawrence Taylor recovered, that was a great defensive play, nothing to do with luck.
49ers probably were the better team on paper, but you won't win or lose games on paper. And it was a hell of a game, one of the best NFC Championship games ever. The one the Giants and SF played in 2012 after the 2011 season was a great game also.

LUCKY?!?!? Are you high? #74 Giants NT Erik Howard fell to one knee and got 49er OG Guy McIntyre to give up on his double-team block with C Jesse Sapolu and as a result Howard got his helmet on the ball as RB Roger Craig hit the hole and dislodged the ball. Meanwhile on the right side of the defense #56 Giants OLB Lawrence Taylor beat a block by 49ers TE Brent Jones by swinging him 90 degrees to Taylor's left and beat a subsequent block by 49er FB Tom Rathman to get to Craig's location along the Line Of Scrimmage to be in position to snatch the ball out of the air.
It had NOTHING to do with luck. Giants played team football......the Giants played for each other.

Yeah that didn't age well Bruce now did it, LT's a LB he can drop into coverage pick balls and score td's with em, Bruce does 1 thing, rush the passer only, he don't cover hb's or te's like LT, that was a dumb take on Bruce's part, ohnand LT has 2 SB rings, how many you got Bruce....oh that's right 4 times in a row to the SB and not a one ring!!!! Hahahahahaa Hahahahahaa

Giants should have won this one, but they won the one that matter. Peace.

Giants should thank Scott Norwood for the superbowl miss.

Bill Walsh was awful to listen to. So negative and sounds like a grumpy old man.

Walsh hated the Giants especially Parcells because the Giants exposed the 49ers as a soft team

The Bills had tons of talent on paper. But they weren't a team. They played for themselves as individuals.

Bills were a good team but when the counted most, they were at a loss. Super bowl 25 was a revenge game.
