For a home with four dogs, three cats, and several fish tanks I can honestly say that my Ruggable rugs changed my life. Rugs always had like a 3-year max lifespan in my home before. Now we have two Ruggables, they get washed once every couple of months and vacuumed in between, and each time they get washed they look brand new again. They're 100% worth the money!

My friend has two cats and swears by the self cleaning kitty litter box she purchased. She lives in an apartment and you never smell the cat box

I totally understand your suggestions. We do the same for our dog. Bed in every room except the bathrooms or laundry. He also gets up on the love seat and our bed once or twice a week or when we have storms 🌩⚡️😉. Our baby is 14yrs old and going strong. He just lets us live in his house. 🤓🐶

Disclaimer: Not all essential oils are safe for pets.
Some essential oils are poisonous to dogs and cats. This includes oil of cinnamon, citrus, pennyroyal, peppermint, pine, sweet birch, tea tree (melaleuca), wintergreen, and ylang ylang.
Safe to use: myrrh, frankincense, chamomile, lavender oil, ginger, rosemary
Please ask your veterinarian which are safest to use in diffusers around your pets!!

MOST essential oils are toxic to cats. Also, cats will always *mark* new furniture by scratching the fabric. Cats have scent receptors in their claws...the way to alleviate this is by using wide, clear, double sided tape (Amazon). Apply tape anywhere cats normally would scratch. Scratching posts placed next to new furniture is never fool proof. Next time you do a video on pet-friendly design, check out Jackson Galaxy.
Also - cats apparently don’t like certain scents - like lavender
Chiming in to also say NO to diffusers and essential oils with cats. Diffusers spread the oil out into the air, which can get on the cat's fur, and it'll ingest it while grooming. Cats are vulnerable to more essential oils and plants than dogs, so it's better to err on the side of caution.
Spent a Saturday evening in vet ER because I wasn’t aware of the danger essential oils pose to cats. I have a multi cat household and it only affected one kitty, but that was enough. Thanks for the video!
Julie, I have several cats of my own plus I rescue, foster and TNR. I have slip covers for summer and winter. Indoor/outdoor area rugs. I also framed a piece of natural jute flooring to the wall as contrast accent. Little catnip spray attracts them to that area so it keeps them away from any furniture. So many people get short scratching post so kitties cannot stretch ,so they find furniture. I LOVE you and your designs..Was so excited you included our fur babies this time.

Dog lover here too, great advice. You brought back all the memories of my Golden Retriever during moulting season. Like tumbleweed on a bad day :) If I had a robo vac back then, it would have probably made a scarf from my hairy hound!

*Essential oils and Robo-Vac* . Not all essential oils are safe for pets, I recommend noting which ones are not safe for cats/dogs. I have a robo-vac I purchased from Amazon. I did not realize at the time that the dirt collection cup was the size of a dust buster. I have one Labrador Retriever, if I do a thorough vacuuming and remember to run the robot daily, it's fine. If not, ten minutes with a cordless vac is quick and easy.
I also have my Dyson handheld for on the spot treatment C 👍🏻 I’ve added a list for toxic/sage oils in the comments- thank you for the reminder!
A few things i didn't see down in the comments for owning cats:
Gray colored fabrics hide fur colors the best, from white to black it just blends in.
Getting furniture or bedding that is flat makes it really easy to comb away the fur that they shed. So avoid tufts/ buttons/ raised patterns. :)
Those tufted seats can be a nightmare to clean! Definitely need the vacuum nozzle for these 😬

I have a GSD and a Maine Coon cat...hair everywhere. Best cleaning helper is the Chom Chom. Amazing what it gets out of upholstery! Also I use the Shark Vac-Mop...everyday. The vacmop is cordless, rechargeable and very effective. Thanks Julie!

We have had great luck with leather and performance velvet with our pets. From 10lbs to 130. I usually get polypropylene rugs because the shampooer cleans them up really well.

I use a diffuser when our cat is spending time outside and turn it off when he comes back into the house. This was a really good video full of good ideas caring for our furry friends and have a pet-friendly home.

My little Beni is welcomed on any space and furniture in our house. I do use machine washable throws where I know he will rest. I adore my Beni n my house stays fresh n clean. He doesn't shed! That's the best!!! You have great tips.
My Yorkie didn’t shed either, but my other ones made up for her 😂

I have a leather sofa and I love it for easy dog hair removal. And Winston my chug has his own blanket on the sofa because he loves to burrow.

I have a machine washable rug from Ruggable and I've literally never more disappointed in a purchase (probably because I was SO hopeful it would solve some issues) It's near IMPOSSIBLE to vacuum with our vacuum (designed specifically to deal with pet hair) without just being pulled off it's mat entirely and getting wrinkled. Also, we have to wash it several times to get it thoroughly cleaned which just wastes waters and energy resources so it's not what I would call "environmentally friendly". I do not like it at all and fully intend to just replace it with a normal rug because frankly, the stress of cleaning the Ruggable rug or a standard rug, is the same, except the standard rug doesn't lie to me.

If your cats have already scratched your furniture, a fabric shaver (pilling shaver) will REALLY help bring it back to better condition. When my cats were newly adopted they didn't know better so I was able to shave the pulls off my sofa and you can hardly tell.

I have 3 cats and 2 dogs along with 2 ruggable washable rugs. I've had great luck with them. The one I've had the longest is a white shag rug. With the animals it starts to look dirty after about a month, so it gets washed monthly. Almost 2 years later and it still looks great!

I have 2 dogs and machine washable runner rugs in my bedroom and kitchen and am very happy with them. The only problem is that even with the rubberized under-rug they do tend to move quite a bit if not anchored by furniture, at least on tiles (kitchen). Mine are from the German company Teppana, but I assume that the ones in the US are similar. They wash very well, and since they are runners I can easily fit them in my rather small washer. They dry quickly when I hang them up (I don't have a dryer so I can't speak to that). In the rest of my apartment I have either wool or heavier synthetic rugs. I can really recommend rubber brooms for getting stubborn pet hair out of rugs. They work a lot better than a vacuum for that, I find.

Hi Julie I can help out with my cat tips. Cover furniture with baby crib pads and fleece blankets. Easy to put In The hot wash. If the cat has found a spot to pee in your rug this is bad but solveable. Put a baby crib pad there and a washable rug. You don’t want hard wood floors to get ruined if you must keep the fabric carpeting. Velvet is an anti cat fabric I’m told. Solid color fabrics rugs are bad. They show all the stains and require constant upkeep or replacing and that is bad for the environment. Wool cleans easily and is water repellent. Keep food in a boot tray for easy clean up and buy lots of lint rollers at the dollar store. Put them all over your house. Scratching posts help but not much. Instead wrap the arms with heavy grade plastic and replace as needed. Exposed couch backs are bad bc they scratch them up. When you see the bad habit put something in your hand and make a spritz sound. They are smart if you don’t have something in your hand they will know you are faking it. They hate the noise bc they think they will get sprayed. Litter boxes must be on trays. Hand vacs all over the house to pick up after them. Vacuum everyday. I had to use Carbona with the sponge tip and Fresh pet scent all the time. Don’t let them get ahead of you. Enjoy their presence bc you won’t always have it. Thank you😊 Julie !

@@youbetcha108 I foster many, many kittens/cats. When cats urinate on flooring, use a enzyme cleaner to remove all the urine scent or they will find that spot and urinate there over and over.
@@murray1505 yep. I did that too. It never worked and neither did the hormone sprays. Just a lot of extra money spent and more chemicals to dispose of. I just had to clean up and put pads down to prevent damage. It’s very hard bc sometimes you don’t know where they go but you can smell it.

Help Julie! I love leather, but I don’t like purchasing it since I’m vegan. Faux Leather can be really tricky as some are much better than others. I really don’t want to feel like I’m sitting on plastic. What brands would you recommend for a Faux Leather Sectional? I’m finally ready to get a sectional for our main family room. I suggest a cat highway and high up perching spots for them as recommended by Jackson Galaxy - think he has written a book on catifying your home if I remember the title correctly. I also love microchip cat flaps so they can come and go as they please yet it keeps want to be trespassing cats out.

I’m team ruggable! Great for my elderly dog and young baby. I will say it isn’t as comfortable as other rugs, but having the ability and peace of mind to wash pee pee out of it is worth it!

@@1_viewer try spraying the corners that your dog likes with a product like bitter apple, it makes it taste bad so they leave it alone. Also offer other more delicious things to chew, like cow ears!
Oh yes, couch covers are huge in Turkey. Even for families without pets or kids. They help extending the life of furniture and when you have an unplanned guest you can strip them off and have a clean house look😊

Hi Julie, just wanted to say, my Pomeranian cross was vomiting too and it turned out to be gut inflammation that eventually ended up in pancreatitis. I don't know if you tried it, but hydrolysed protein diet really sorted it out. Best wishes x

IKEA has this scratching mats that you can put around a table leg or pillar or tape them with rug tape on the floor...some cats like to scratch on the floor.

I understand about carpet, but my friend had wood staircase and her dog died after it ran downstairs slipped and tumbled down, such a tragedy. So my staircase has carpeting and the rest of the house is hardwood.

....I loved this topic and for those of us who love indoor Furrbabies, its something that isn't often addressed.
I have wool ,and wool blend rugs and I've had no issues with those since getting a kitty. I also caution about the Essential Oils, ( having worked at a Veterinarian practice) certain ones are toxic to dogs and cats, and other animals. ( birds/ fish, etc). Myrrh, Frankincense, Rosemary, Lavender, Chamomile and Ginger are considered safe. With the use of Oils in this day and time, one must research and be mindful of which ones are not safe .
I know I'm probably among those that are in the minority, since I don't want a Robotic vacumn. Lol. I'm so Old School about certain things, ... lol... I'm good with the exercise that vacuuming gives, even if it's not " strenuous ". ...I vacuum the ceiling corners, draperies, soft brush vacuum the lampshades... it's kinda like " therapy " lol.

@@enna4986 ...My kitty has claws, but I trim them every 2 weeks, or when it needs to be done... so I don't have any issues with that, and the rugs. I urge people not to get thier cats declawed... if people really understood what that is it's cutting off part of your cat's bone in its foot and I could not ever, ever agree with that , and I used to work at a veterinary office and we would not declaw cats, it's inhumane. If people researched this, they'd understand why. Get your animals used to having their teeth brushed , get them used to having their nails clipped , being brushed ... cats are trainable.
@@texasstardust6010 I completely agree with the cruel practice of declawing. Ppl say their cats are fine, but they have no idea if the cat is suffering neuropathic or phantom pain. We trim our cats (4) claws as well, but still they chase each other and the tops of furniture etc gets scratched up. Ty for responding! Thinking of either just keeping things covered (sigh) or putting glass tops on. They’re worth it!
@@enna4986 .... I am so thankful that you understand about the declawing,, God bless you! I meant to ask if you have the " cat clawing " boards, they come in different sizes and products ,(?) There's even one that is part of a Cat Lounger thing that attaches to ones' window. I have two types of these " cat scratcher " products and they do work at encouraging your Furrbabies to use them. It often just takes patience and a little bit of time.
Yes I understand they are worth it... my kitty thinks that she owns every piece of furniture in my house lol. She Lounges on the coffee table.... and end tables and wherever she thinks she wants to ....lol. However , she will never get on the kitchen counters , she's never done that, I won't allow that. But to her, other flat surfaces, where there's room ..." are fair game", lol.
Have you tried enzymes for your dog's vomiting? There are great brands online. I use Healthy Gut from Adored Beast. Also, be careful with essential oils. They have to be specific pet-safe options! Cats especially are very susceptible to injury if they either ingest or get EOs on their bodies since they self-groom.
I buy a multivitamin that my vet recommended, but she’s still vomiting regularly. Let me try this one! Thank you so much 🙏🏻

Any tips for scratched hardwood floors? 😢
Aside from sanding it down and refinishing it? I hear that a combo of baking soda and olive oil can help reduce and remove scratches from wood. You make a paste with a couple of drops of the oil and powder, apply it to the affected areas, then gently rub is out with a microfiber cloth or sponge. Let me know if this works! 🙏🏻
Try denatured alcohol.
My Pom starting having issues when I began diffusing essential oils and that vet advised against using an essential oil diffuser. 🤦🏻♀️
Oh no!! You definitely need to be aware of the toxic/ nontoxic varieties Kiki! 😣 I used lavender to calm down my anxious pup as advised by my vet 🙏🏻
@@JulieKhuu Yeah... I would use Lavender as well to help us fall asleep but after a few nights, she started doing this thing that was sort of like a cat trying to pass a hairball.

Does anyone have any tips for keeping the top of the bed clean when you sleep with your dog, which I don’t prefer. The dirt that follows him indoors is incredible! I tried using a top sheet the color of my comforter, that didn’t work. Please Help!
That’s what I do. I lay a top sheet on top of my duvet and launder that regularly
Get a few sheets and change them more often. Brush the dog more often. It may help.

I am glad to hear I am not the only one with dog beds EVERYWHERE. Performance fabrics are great for messy, sloppy humans too! And carpets they are just plain gross.

I am a cat person who got a dog, a Jack Russell terrier who is about to turn 14. He is extremely clean, he washes himself like a cat. But twice a year he vomits, lots with preference on the couch and the bed. And it smells. I have washed the sofa and the bed many times and do not dare to buy new ones.
He sleeps in my bed, the sofa or his own bed. Dog hair gets stuck everywhere except the dog! I have stopped buying black clothes and have invested in clothes that are mottled, grey, beige/gray so the dog hair is not visible.
I gave up having a cat because he is jealous. What not to do for your pet?😄

A lot of essential oils, even organic ones, are toxic for pets, cat or dogs. Ingestion by them licking themselves or skin exposure. That's why my cats are not allowed in the bedroom because I have good sleep helped by essential oils that are toxic for them. Also in the living room I try to use candles that have essential oils that are not toxic for them.

Cats like a scratchen post on their walking way into the house. So don't put the scratchen post in a corner.
Whenever using essential oils keep the cats out of that area for at least an hour. Never use essential oils in a room with fish, reptiles, or birds. Cats are easy enough to shoo out of the room for an hour but the fish, birds, and reptiles not so much

WARNING - Be careful with diffusers and cats! Most essential oils (even organic ones) are toxic to cats, and electric diffusers put the oils out into the air, which gets on the cat's fur, which it then ingests while grooming.
I know Julie doesn't have experience with cats, so I wanted to put this here. Be really careful with essential oils and plants so you don't accidentally poison your cat!

I’m allergic Ann! 🙁 I learned the hard way when I had trouble breathing and broke out in hives while visiting my gf’s house for the first time. It didn’t even occur to me that it could have been her cat since the cat didn’t make an appearance the entire time we were there. It was my gf who finally figured it out 😣
@@JulieKhuu There is something called a hempa filter. You find them at Home depot. My dentist's wife was allergic and he got one and then he adopted 3 cats ( one from me)
Dog and cat owners need to be careful with essential oils as many are toxic to them - citrus, eucalyptus etc.
My cat enjoys ripping into a cardboard box rather than a scratching post.

you need to be careful with essential oils because some of them are extremely toxic to pets. please do research before using ANY essential oil diffusers in your home when you have pets so you know which ones and what amounts are safe for them to be around.

Please be careful with essential oils and pets!!! Most scents are fine, but some in high concentration can be very damaging to your pet, even making them throw up or have seizures.

Hate to tell you Julie, but my daughter’s cat destroyed two recliners in our house with 2 scratching posts available. Declaw or don’t purchase a cat! Destructive.

We clip our cats nails about weekly unless we are busy. It takes us 15 minutes to do 4 cats. Plz research declawing. It is essentially like amputating one of your joints.
@@enna4986 My daughter did research declawing and chose not to declaw. I never wanted a cat in my house, but my daughter needed a place to stay for a year. Unfortunately our love and kindness cost us our recliners and a set of drapes. She kept the claws trimmed too. Some cats are destructive.
I am “old school”. Declawing front paws never hurt any of my friends cats. Everyone has to do what they think is best.
Pls do not use essential oils around dogs. Not good for them.

Not all. I have 6 personal cats and I fosterplus TNR. I use essential oils all the time and some recommended by my vet. You do have to research, but they are safe and healthful for animals.

Thank you Julie, you were also using oils in defused so they would never be around animals. I work in natural pet store and they are used all the time for calming and flee protection. Tons of sites have give information on essential oils, house plants and natural products to use instead of toxic chemicals. Thank you

Nope. Not in my experience at least. Love the robot vacuum and most of my clients who can also attest to it have hardwood or engineered wood flooring. I have laminate so it’s definitely super low maintenance Krishan
