See The Dramatic Street Changes Happening in Hoboken & Jersey City

  • At Transportation Alternatives' Vision Zero Cites Conference in October, some session attendees opted to see some of the transformative progress going on just over the Hudson River in the cities of Hoboken & Jersey City.
    The bike tour drew am overflow crowd and what they got to see were ample treatments & policies in both cities - a few of which you will see here.
    In Hoboken, now into its 5th year of no traffic deaths of any kind (pedestrian, bike or motorist), conference riders got to see the significantly safe streets - much of which is attributable to the process of daylighting, not allowing car parking at the intersections of streets to make people more visible.
    New Jersey State Law prohibits parking within 25 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection.
    In Jersey City (which Streetfilms has paid many visits to) they have continued to roll out protected bike lanes continued at a great pace since 2019 using various types of protection for riders. That not only includes armadillos and jersey barriers but in some instances concrete barrels. Both cities are also using a type of green paint product called endurablend which provides cyclists with more friction and lasts longer than traditional paint.
    Please enjoy the filmed tour which comes with Streetfilms exclusive, dramatic BEFORE footage showing how much the streets have changed in spots.

    Protected intersections are one of those things that I really want to see more of. I hope the ones here can be properly installed with pavement instead of just paint. Another thing that I didn't see in this video that we need to build is continuous sidewalks, where instead of having ADA curb cuts that force wheelchair users down into the gutter, there is a continuous platform from corner to corner along the crosswalk, with ramps for the car to go up instead of pedestrians and cyclists. Speed tables 20 or so feet before some crossings, like mid-block, would encourage cars to stop. This is nice to see.

    I heard that Hoboken hasn’t had a pedestrian death in 5 years. I went to go check it out (I’m from Philly). I drove in, not surprisingly driving through is hard. But when i parked and rode my bike, I really got to explore the city as it should be. All the protected bike lanes and safe pedestrian crossing are really beautiful to see. GREAT JOB

    Beautiful to see! I haven't been to Hoboken in years and I am so glad to see that they are trying to make it better and safer. I think the most refreshing thing is the willingness to try something out temporarily.
    My city in New Hampshire doesn't do pilot programs; everything gets stuck in endless planning and review so when something finally does get updated it usually is with a plan from 15-20 years ago. Pilot programs to test out new ideas prevent municipal stagnation.

    Way to go Jersey! My question is: When it snows, are the bike lanes going to be cleared of snow? If that becomes a priority you will see more bike traffic. And Yes, you can ride all year round. In Boulder, Colorado, we ride all year round! The bike paths here during the winter are cleared better than the roads.

    • @christineb8148
      @christineb8148 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      We have little plows for the smaller walkways etc. We're heavily pedestrian so that is a priority. Snow is pretty aggressively cleared for all types of transport.

    1) Do the curb extensions pinch people on bikes or is it not an issue as they're only on streets with slow design speeds?
    2) Snow clearance?
    3) Residential bike parking standards?
    4) Is minimum age for using bike share 15 like in NYC?

    • @dutchman7623
      @dutchman7623 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      The curb extensions only block parking up to the corner. So the street was already pinched by parked cars. But the curb extensions are only six inches high and offer much more visibility on the crossing instead of six feet high SUV's.

    As someone who doesn't own a vehicle and travels primarily by escooter and to a much lesser degree public transportation, the idea is great. However the bike lanes have a lot of disfunction. Many bikers and scooter riders continue to ride on the sidewalk. The excuse i always get when I bring this up is that "the bike lanes aren't protected its not safe." As said in the video, joggers, walkers, and baby strollers use the bike lanes all the time. A month and a half ago I struck a pedestrian and was thrown into a truck which also hit me because the pedestrian walked into the bike lane looking in the opposite way of traffic, from behind a box truck. I was 5 feet away, all I could do was lean to the left to miss the BABY he was carrying. I now have a herniated disk. This is not uncommon.

I am really glad to see the changes but I wonder if those who endured “the darker times” are actually around to benefit from this? I remember seeing posters around the mall that said these kinds of streetscapes were literally and figuratively just around the corner then, but it took 35 years 😅

Big mistake. Look at the studies from European cities that did this to their main streets or in many cases most of their city center. It was a 100% success from reducing pollution to increasing healthy living and retail sales increased dramatically for the stores in those areas.
