    Totally agree with you. I thought it was just me thinking that Google's offering has been getting poorer for a decade. They make out that they have all these clever AI algorithms but they are unstable, difficult to manage and difficult to measure. They don't even get the basics right. There is supposed to be a daily budget and they will not exceed 2x the budget on any one day. Last Saturday one of my campaigns went off the rails and spent 8x the budget. Imagine if your car tried to accelerated to 8x the speed you wanted. You'd say the car was broken and the manufacturer was dangerous and should not be allowed to sell cars. We are at that point with Google. It needs to be broken up - its a monopoly.

      It's definitely becoming more of an issue! For years now, an advertiser's campaign management task is partially to work around what Google recommends to drive cost effective results. They do need oversight as the monopoly gives them impunity

      @@darrentaylordigital It's to the point where you might as well just go old school if you're a local business and hand out fliers at local events.

      Still a solid career to be had running Google ads right now and for many years to come. This is just the endgame! Watch my video about how to keep your job in digital marketing

      @@darrentaylordigital How can this be a solid career? It seems like a great way to get an ulcer as a campaign manager working under target cost per acquisition KPIs with fewer levers, less data/no cookies, and limited understanding into why a campaign is not working, but still being responsible for outcomes. In Frederick Vallaeys books, he mentions the three added value skills that campaign managers will need to adopt (including spotting market opportunities just in time and feeding the AI with data), but it still seems like an uphill battle compared to the past.

    I totally agree with you. I thought it was only me that thought Google's offering has currently got poorer over the years. We need to follow the procedures to earn more profit:
    1. Put your right foot in
    2. Put your right foot out
    3. Pot your right foot in
    4. And you shake it all about
    5. You do the hokie pokie and you turn yourself around
    6. ?????
    7. Profit!

    • @darrentaylordigital
      @darrentaylordigital  ปีที่แล้ว

      It definitely has got worse. I think they've decided they'll make way more money while still somewhat generating leads and sales (at a way higher cost) by automating everything!

  • @jeremyhughes5814
    @jeremyhughes5814 ปีที่แล้ว

    I couldn't agree more. Google ads used to give more of an advantage to those who knew technically how to use the platform, and then 'tax' those who did not. They have realized it's more profitable to just limit the amount of control users have and then decide for themselves where to show ads and what advertisers to preference. Of course the platform doesn't want to choke their advertisers - it needs them to be profitable, but its becoming more a platform for advertisers with limited know how - so for those technically minded focus on conversion event tracking and setup and CRO.

  • @dab0331

    Google wants to make a world where you're in a car on cruise control with no ability to control the steering wheel, nor the ability to at least control the speed

  • @JonathanPearson-hz3kr
    @JonathanPearson-hz3kr ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There's plenty to mourn regarding the controls advertisers used to have which are now being taken away. However, really it's an evolution and in a strange way PPC is now much more aligned with SEO. If you run an eCommerce account, for example, a much greater proportion of your time is now focused around feed optimisation and product analysis. Don't despair, Darren!

      It's definitely changing, and I think we will all adapt and continue to get results, but the game has changed for sure. Volume will be more important than the cost of sales in the long term. It's all about what we can do to optimise with this in mind

    I’m myself working for google ads, can say it’s all about heading towards a fully automated platform, where advertisers will need to do as little configuration as possible in their campaigns, similar to the smart campaigns

      @@darrentaylordigital our adwords have gone downhill massively just recently. It's scary!

    One thing which has been on my mind is the use of lookalike websites as an asset - ie use of a competitors website as a funnel 'guide' for potential customers. It does feel that the connection to customers is becoming a bit diffuse (and confused unless I produce specific video content to prevent AI-constructed abstractions on display ads). Google needs to maintain a specific ROI to keep my advertising dollars going to them. My big concern is who else can I advertise with and get the same reach? I distrust Twitter and Meta has become a massive headache.

    • @darrentaylordigital
      @darrentaylordigital  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly! Google knows there aren't many places businesses can go, so they will keep going in the direction they are, because you have no choice!

  • @tianaliss6566
    @tianaliss6566 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I feel like you have to go through extra length in set up to make sure you have as much control on your campaign as possible. The number of clients who approve auto suggest and send their campaigns off the rail towards exponentially worse results is becoming more and more frequent. To me, it’s clear they’re only concerned about clicks, but at any cost that benefits them 😅

    • @darrentaylordigital
      @darrentaylordigital  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's so true! I've seen so many who also opt into display along with search as a default too. So many traps that inexperienced advertisers fall for. Google will continue to take advantage... Thanks for watching

    The world needs to engineer new channels outside of the hand of major corporations. Something should happen. As far as I see is total abuse from major companies. Craigslist was nice all, although it's a company. Local self-advertising platforms should be the key to this. After New Year, all my numbers are down I'm getting only 1/4 of what I had before. I'm spending 1.5m annually, and I can't get anything from google. I use 6-7 different channels, and most platforms want you to answer customer questions and provide online quotes bs. It's becoming unmanageable and increasing costs on my part and the cost of the lead. Adding AI SEO this year. Full-blasted blogs on 5-10 domains automatically generated content, get and tag AI images. I have no other options. I wrote a platform that does it all. All I need is to upload a list of 10K keywords (better historical search terms), and it will create everything I need in a few days.

      This is the problem with a monopoly. We know there's a problem with Google, but the general population will never leave Google. Interesting to hear you're getting on board with AI for SEO. Let me know how it goes!

      That's actually a pretty good idea.
      Local search engines might just be what's needed.
      Something like Facebook marketplace, but that is it's completely own search engine that only locals know about and exclusively use
