To me it's really a given that the show tries to depict what a person with mental illness goes through and aims to give us a strong emotional connection to herself and her experience. Throughout most of the show we see events from Almas point of view, and we are totally buying in with what she experiences, we basically actively root for the events shown to be what the show is about. And I love the ending ambiguity - it's not there to deprive the audience from the "correct solution", I don't think that was the point. I think the idea is, again, to leave us emotionally connected with Alma - we, the same as her, want the fantastical elements to be true, we want her to continue the wonderful, surreal experience where she gets to have superpowers, chat with her dead father and control space and time, instead of the alternative where she is just a regular person coping with a serious mental illness.
As a side note, I would be very careful to take most of the show's "reveals" as ground truth. Only the 6th episode clues us in how things look from the outside and provides a realistic explanation to Alma knowing (or even experiencing) events she wasn't physically present at - she is simply very perceptive and her mind is exceptionally good at processing information and presenting it to her in a specific manner she perceives as visions. All other episodes as filmed in "Alma-vision", and as such, all the events we see are a work of an unreliable narrator. Her brain may have picked info here and there and then reassembled it in the form of a vision, but we can never be sure what is fact and what is her mind filling in the blanks. For example, Alma could have seen Darrold's name from Farnaz's obituary, but the "skinny arms" bit was a complete fabrication of her brain, reaffirmed by the fact that Darrold really doesn't look like someone who ever had skinny arms. Therefore, the entire "lab fight" and subsequent murder/suicide might simply be yet another reinterpretation of what might have happened based on information Alma had at the time - after all, do we really get confirmation that Camilla was the one breaking in the lab? That scene barely makes any sense when you think about it - would it really be a mystery who broke into the lab with all the ruckus Camilla was making? Why would Camilla even think Alma was "hidden" in a locked up lab with Jacob nowhere to be seen? And after being so worried about Alma, would she leave her on the street the entire night considering the fact Jacob openly told her they were going trick-or-treating and he left her waiting on the curb? I think it's far more likely that it was simply Alma's mind rearranging things so they form some sort of "solution" to the mystery she was trying to solve, even though nothing is solved - we don't know who broke into the lab, we don't know why Jacob and Farnaz died (and we will never be able to know), and the entire lab scene was simply Alma transferring the fight at home she was physically present at (and couldn't remember what was about, since she supposedly had her earpiece out, even though she was looking at the parents and was shown to know how to lip read) to a location where all the mysteries get tied with a neat bow, giving her closure.

Prithviraj Manak I think the answer lies in the boxes Alma got from the attic. Alma went through the stuff in these boxes that had lot of information that she ‘acquired’ but was not supposed to know first hand. Lot of events like her father committing suicide, Alma revealing Becca’s infidelity and others really did not happen but were just in Alma’s mind. I believe this series is a glamorized version of what goes inside the mind of a schizophrenic patient but in reality it’s quite frightening & tragic.

Another interesting aspect of the show that nobody seems to talk to me about is the Polar Opposites that her parents represent. Her mother is constantly focus on fixing her so that she can live a normal life. Her father is more accepting of her condition whether it be schizophrenia or her hearing impairment. Her mother is as adamant about her taking her pills as she is about her getting the hearing implant when she was a child. Her father learns sign language to better communicate with her and wants to give her the choice of having the implant. Her mother never wants to give her that choice and we see history repeat itself with her medication. Perhaps the focus should be left upon whether or not she was actually able to manipulate time and more about the acceptance of people as they are, even if their perceptions are completely different than our own.

when the second season comes, it would be nice to get a bit more background for Camilla. We have a lot of info about Jacob's upbringing (possibly through Alma digging it up, possibly through his ghost telling her) but we don't really know anything about where Camilla's personality developed.
this makes sense for the narrative of Alma being the focal point of the season, Alma does not like her mother and resents pretty much everything she does so obviously we aren't going to get the same kind of deep dive into her upbringing like we did with the other important people in Alma's life. We do get some good character moments that explain a bit why she does what she does. When Reed's parents are around they are pretty rude and dismissive of all of the Winograd-Diaz family and they show that Alma wasn't being hyperbolic at the bar. Camilla has likely faced people and institutions like that for most of her life and so her insistence on Alma "fitting in" very much comes from a place of good intentions, Alma is Latina and lives in Texas, no need to make her life more miserable with being deaf so force the decision to get her hearing "fixed". This is then repeated with the medication.
What I would really like to know is if she has always been strict or if that was something from her upbringing. Considering she was married to Jacob for at least 10 years, she must've not had a problem with his eccentricities and "just be the you you want to be" attitude, but that she forces rigidity and stifles creative thinking in her children really makes me wonder where she learned that from and if that was something Jacob also didn't have a problem with

I have 3 theories about the ending
A: She’s still in a coma and is just waking up
B: There’s no on there and she has schizophrenia
C: That was her dad and she does have time manipulating powers
D: She did have time manipulating powers but she went to the wrong place and time is resetting

    • @KabirBansod

that would be 4 theories, I know someone who had schizophrenic episode and I can vouch that this is what it feels like...not that you believe yourself to be a time traveler, but you see things that feel so real people would not understand! I think we are missing the fact that she mentions she used to come to her mothers attic when she used to get high, so she might have already read the newspaper articles etc and her mind is just playing games.

I love your review of undone! Thanks. I feel like it's both. I mean in western culture yeah sure she is schizophrenic, but in other cultures such a condition is perceived as the person having a bridging quality linking us to an ethereal world beyond our 3d experience of reality. I think in this case, Alma also is dealing with her own trauma. It all reminds me of the technique called "completion" where past trauma can be "undone " via completion/making peace with/new understanding.

Undone. What an absolutely brilliant title too! The characters represent the human compulsion to leverage religion, science, metaphysics, drugs, psychology, etc. to try and undo our most painful mistakes. The show explores our internal need to create meaning from the mystery of existence in a way that is pathological - no matter if you have a diagnosed mental illness or happen to conform with a more socially acceptable form of conscious delusion. The only escape from our fate (an utter lack of free will) lies in our ability to dream up a sense of control in a subconscious hall of mirrors. I hope season 2 explores the relationship between consciousness and self-determinism. Great breakdown, please do more!

This review better cover the meaning of the Dance in Episode 7, because that was genius writing.
    Edit: Dammit it didn't.
Basically the Dance is shown to be an escape from reality, essentially what Alma is experiencing; it is a drug and so happens to be explained by someone literally sharing a cigarette. It connects all people: we are all broken people, we all want to escape from our boring, monotonous lives one way or another. This is like a primal language that we all share, a drug we all want. The escape from reality is represented as a drug as it is like stopping griving a shit about the responsibilities of life, being broken, like drinking or smoking.
It is ironic that Alma is pressured to "take her drugs" (her medication) when truly, she is one of the few embracing this drug, this escape from reality.
I think her father is simply a piece of her fucked up mind representing her conscience. It is the only aspect of her telling herself to think differently from what she instinctively feels, but that is also the part of her that wants to look at her boring, monotonous, and depressing life in a new fashion. This part of her eventually resents looking at reality under a new light when it nears finding the dark truth: in her father's storyline, that he was a fucked up, broken man like everyone else hiding behind a façade, a preposterous idea of being able to change the boring and dark reality through some impossible vessel, and he murdered himself; in Alma's storyline, that she is just mentally ill, broken like everyone, broken like before, but now even more so. We are all broken, deal with it. Alma embraces it as she smashes the mirror, she breaks it discovering her conscience needs to come to terms with its brokenness.
Perhaps the darkness of boredom and depression is the cave, and only by embracing it and Dancing the drug can your conscious come out of it, escape this dark reality with a new, exciting perception of the world, walking under the literal rising sun of novelty.
One needs to escape reality to look at it from the outside, to find a new perspective.
It took literally breaking Alma (car crash and coma) for her to escape through her schizophrenia, her conscience (Jacob, the dad) being addicted to this idea of escaping reality, like it is a drug. She then has to accept being broken by diving into the mirror and breaking it (and in her mind, her conscience, Jacob, comes to terms with his brokenness) and travel to the cafe in Mexico to finally let her conscience exit the cave.
*K do I get my good grade now? Thx.*

It constantly kept me guessing and continuously had me wondering about the de-ja vu aspect... Or how life and certain aspects and parts of it tend to be and or feel like a mystery until you experience something to put that same scenario into perspective... Only to leave you lost again and questioning the same logic as soon as your perspective changes. Fascinating throughout. I'm with team undecided on this but... I do WANT to believe she actually 'can' alter time even though my sceptical nature doesn't quite allow me to fully commit to that possibility (I mean, there is room for reasonable doubt here) but loved it, and I think it was because of that doubt'.

I think the show is perfect with this ending. However it is so great I would also like to see more. If we get any other seasons they should follow other characters and see their truth and interpretation of the events in this one, or events preceding the series like when her father was still alive. Doing this will further highlight that everything we see is an interpretation of our brain and our filters. It will further highlight that there is no "absolute truth" while providing more character development from other perspectives.
There's so many ways they can go with this show if they decide to do so. Although I completely understand that this standalone season is completely perfect.

For me the key scene is in the first episode, where Alma describes a scene from weeks into the future to her mother. We then see that very scene in a later episode.
So to me, either her time traveling is real or the entire season takes place in her coma. It doesn't mean she's not also schizophrenic, but unlike the other pieces of evidence which support time travel, I don't see any mitigating circumstances that explain Alma's access to this information.

  • @MEKEStudios
    @MEKEStudios 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

UNDONE is literally Mind-Bending! Now I don't know if this is where the creators will take this series, but I will describe what may be the most realistic and satisfying truth for me:
I believe string theory (mentioned once in the series) and the undiscovered possibility of parallel universes is the key to UNDONE. Alma's new sensory experience is an ACTUAL ability to shift one's consciousness to a corresponding avatar of hers in a parallel universes. The reason she is able to alter the reality of minor situations (like in the wedding) is because of the relative distance of that parallel universe to her current universe. This would explain her ability to improve and get stronger throughout the series. She has to train her ability to jump to a much further universal reality from her own (like one where her dad's alive).
The ability to see her dad is as he said, the state of having one foot in a reality and one foot in the space between realities (the infinite/spiritual realm/the-period-absent-of-time-and-space).
The only controversy to this theory of mine is the actual plot to change instances of her past in order to alter her future because, in my understanding, all she would have to do to is have enough strength (superpowers) to jump into a time where her father exists. It is possible, however, that it in order to jump into the parallel universe, one must have the imaginative ability to rewriting that moment of critical change. (Just like at the wedding, when Alma went back and said something different in the wedding. She completed the act, the family's reaction changed ,and Alma therefore stayed in that timeline). If the dad not answering the phone was that moment of critical change for her dad's life, then there would be only two reasons that she returned to her original reality after jumping into the glass:
    1. Soon after she left that critical trick-or-treating moment, her father still decided to leave little Alma and check out the situation in his lab (like he got another phone call or something). He therefore still dies and adult Alma is left in her current reality.
    2. In the reality where her father exists, Alma is dead by the age of 28. Which means that her consciousness had no avatar to shift into...
Either way, the idea of altering one's past is a classic trap of the butterfly effect and therefore IMPOSSIBLE. At the very moment Alma would have conceived the idea of changing time in her own reality, Alma would not be the very Alma that changes it because (if she succeeds) the time would have already been rewritten... (being stuck in an infinite loop)
Therefore, the only possibility for time travel (to the past) to exist is for the possibility of parallel universes to exist.
Of course, this show may just end up being about the trippy experience people with schizophrenia, dementia and other mental and memory disorders have. Either way, it is an amazing show and deserves to be applauded!
    Good review Johnny 2 :)

This show freaked me the fuck out. I was in the hospital for a week, in a coma for 3 days of it, from a bad asthma/bronchitis event (right before covid started becoming a thing in the US - which is interesting if nothing else). As I was waking from the coma, I kept getting stuck in time loops where I kept seeing the same events play out over and over, it was super bizarre. Seeing this show right after that was a mind fuck for sure. Has anyone else ever experienced this? Like, is that a thing with waking up from comas?

So it seems like ther actually is going to be a second season but I don't really see how it being schizophrenia contradicts a second season.
My theory is that the father couldn't appear because Becca was there so if Alma haluzinated him being there and said so it would've been obvious he's not actually real. As soon as she is gone her face is suggesting that she might be seeing her father come out of the cave.
The only reason she starts believing she might be schizophrenic in the end of that episode is because her father didn't show up. If her father appears to walk out of the cave thag would prove everyone wrong so she would continue to refuse getting help

@@tpcoy I think that her reaction on their trip to Mexico is probably a hint (Jacob is excited about the prospect of his daughter's indigenous heritage and their connection to that group; Camila nervously and dismissively says "People aren't usually nice to them but let's not talk about it"). Camila probably has that reaction a lot of older people from immigrant communities do, where they are focused on assimilation for the sake of survival. She had the same reaction to Alma's deafness, whereas her dad was more open to letting her be part of the deaf community & just accommodating her without the implant.
